Alamos, 2008 Malbec Mendoza (Argentina) , $13

The Catena family has been making wine in Argentina for more than a hundred years. The family owns the vineyards, handpicks the grapes and sorts them. The Alamos line gets raves from critics. The Malbec at $13 is a tremendous value. Big, concentrated flavors with great acid balance. You get the stewed plum, cranberry, dark berry flavors on the palate, with tannins off the skins neatly woven in and a blast of creamy vanilla from the wood. Some wine pundits are calling Malbecs "recession reds." They're very popular in restaurants by the glass.
