Seven Hills, 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley (Washington), $25

I love tasting wines from the Pacific Northwest. Seven Hills is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Washington's Walla Walla Valley. Wine grower Casey McClellan is a fourth-generation farmer. This Cab has some Cabernet Franc and Merlot blended in, but it is a trumpet blast of Cab Sauv's typical cassis-cherry-blackberry character, emboldened with spicy oak and vanilla. It has great mouthfeel -- creamy tannins that still have bite -- and good acidity for structure. This is what I want from a red wine. I don't want a Mack truck.
