Taltarni, 2003 Cephas Pyranees of Victoria (Australia), $40

Wow. That's what I say. This is a costly wine, $40 list price, but you have to consider the quality. Wow. It's a blend of mostly Shiraz with a complement of Cabernet Sauviginon and is aged in 100 percent new French oak. Tasting it now, the smoke of the barrels has managed to blow off, and the acidity is holding the flavors intact. Aromas are intense black fruit and dark chocolate, followed by vanilla. The palate is woven tight as a drum. It's wonderful now, but oh how it will evolve as it continues to age. Cephas is an under-the-radar hit. If you are a collector, buy a case and store it wisely. It's fabulous.
