Today's recommended wine

Selections are by wine columnist Sandra Silfven, unless otherwise noted.

Starborough, 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough New Zealand, $15

This island country certainly made an impact in the wine world, especially with one variety -- Sauvignon Blanc. The kiwi wine is tart, dry, and has bigtime acidity. This one has mammoth fruit incorporated into the recipe -- tart lemon, kumquat, white grapefruit, peach, passion fruit, melon and kiwi (of course). The label with the starfish on the front and on the top of the Stelvin screwcap is distinctive. It's imported by Gallo -- a reason to look for it on store shelves. Gallo culls out the best of the best. This one, with surprising grape tannins on the palate and an explosion of flavors, is worth asking about.
