What can I say: A great vintage, 14 (not 12) clones of Pinot Noir, French oak and the vineyards in the Santa Lucia Highlands -- tailor-made for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. This baby is intense tart cherries (it is so cherry you can taste the skins), raspberries, dark plums, chocolate, cloves and vanilla. With acidity and a good blast of alcohol (almost 14 percent), this baby blooms. It's like an essence of Pinot Noir.
Selections are by wine columnist Sandra Silfven, unless otherwise noted.
