Today's recommended wine
Potel-Aviron, 2007 Fleurie Beaujolais (France), $22
This is Gamay? One hundred percent? You bet. And you could stump the stars with it. It has the usual black cherry, dark plum, vanilla personality, but it is miles past the typical fruity Beaujolais. It's complex, dry and impressive. It's made off 50-plus-year-old vines from two sites. British wine writer and Master of Wine Clive Coates calls Nicolas Potel "a superstar" in France. I promise, you will not recognize this wine as Gamay. And that's not intended as a slam on Gamay. But this is delicious.
