Kansas City Honey Barbecue Wings

July 31, 2003

     40 MINUTES
     15 minutes to make
     25 minutes to grill

     1 (12-ounce) can root beer
     1 cup ketchup
     1/4 cup honey
     1/4 cup vegetable oil
     2 tablespoons white vinegar
     1 teaspoon black pepper, ground
     1/2 teaspoon garlic clove, minced
     1/2 teaspoon liquid smoke
     1/2 teaspoon ginger, ground
     1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, ground
     2 pounds chicken wings

In the morning, place all ingredients except chicken wings in large bowl; stir until blended.
Add wings, cover, and marinate in refrigerator at least 8 hours.
     Preheat grill.
     Remove wings from refrigerator.
Place remaining marinade in medium saucepan and boil 5 to 10 minutes to desired sauce thickness, stirring occasionally.
     Divide into two portions.
Grill the wings 15 to 25 minutes or until the juices run clear when pierced with a fork and the meat reaches internal temperature of 180 degrees; turn and baste with one portion of cooked marinade occasionally.
Serve with the other portion (which was not used as marinade when grilling) of boiled sauce.
