Referees

Of course it looked intentional to me, but I'm a Wing and Kronner fan.

If you're a goon, like Goon LaJoke, then when you sit around you don't contemplate how you're going to deke the goalie during the next shootout. No. You sit around figuring how you're going to 'send messages'. And that message is that me goon owns you playa, and that way my paycheck gets bigger.

And so LaJoke knows the rules and has figured out how to play 'within' them so that he plays a little harder and sends a little stronger message than the other goons so that he might be considered the head goon.

It must be ok, though. Because as you will soon see the NHL will do nothing about it.

So here we go again. Our team needs a goon bigger than the next team's goon so their goon won't be so apt to pick on our players for fear our goon will take their goon off the ice.

THE Trade

Music to my ears the first I heard of it back then and even today -

"The Hartford Whalers dealt left wing Brendan Shanahan, one of the NHL's most dangerous and colorful forwards, and defenseman Brian Glynn to the Detroit Red Wings yesterday for future Hall of Fame defenseman Paul Coffey, physical center Keith Primeau and a 1997 first-round draft pick."

And the Detroit Red Wings as we know them today were born.

Primeau was too petulant to be a SC winner. Coffey'd seen better daze. As Scottie recently stated, Shanny was the missing piece.

Center Ice

Last night's game was the second or third time I was unable to watch the 3rd period (I have a young wife) but instead was able to watch it this morning on Center Ice.

Pierre/Oz

The knock on poor Ozzie is and always will be that he's always been carried by the team and that the team has never been carried by Ozzie, which probably isn't enough to prevent his stats now or eventually from getting him in the HOF.

Play Howard again next game....

Listened to the game on XM radio tonight. You get a different perspective when all you've got is the announcer's words. His assessment tonight when the Wings were up 6-1 on J Ho - Well he hasn't had to do much tonight .... and when he has he hasn't done it very well.

ohDRWING

Come on now, Nick . . . crawl out on that limb! . . ha ha .... three pick of the litter no brainer prom queen no.1 draft choices (in a row) the likes of which the DRWs have not seen since what .... Dionne ???? . . . has there ever been a finer keel laid for a team? . . they can revolve role players around those guys for 10-15 years or more ..... though eventually one or two will want to leave for bigger (contracts) and better NY, LA...) things.

19

I'm old enough to have gone to DRW games as a kid circa Howe, Delvecchio, Mahovolich. They were a pretty fun team to watch and we had some great times down at the old Olympia. My dad and his buddies loaded my brother and me up with cokes and hot dogs while they drank their beers and we all roared with every movement on the ice. We threw dollars in and drew numbers and who's ever player scored first got the pot. Under those conditions you become a fan for life.

Then they were the dead Wings for nearly 20 years, R.I.P. Norris and Harkness.

Then, this little scrawny guy shows up and starts waking the place up. We weren't even sure the kid was there for a while because we'd buried the Wings (kinda like the Lions of then) in our minds. He was lighting up the score board. I was reluctant to get hooked, you couldn't get your hopes up too high because they'd either run him off or he'd run off.

But the kid stayed and we learned how to say his name correctly. He grew into the man that became The Captain. He gave us our Red Wings and our Detroit back. He became the face of the franchise, the town, the league, and the sport.

And we all know the story. How he changed his game and did whatever it took for the team to win. Lead by example, hard work, effort, persistence, honesty, integrity, he fought the good fight. Nobody deserves more from the people of Detroit, nobody deserves more have his number retired, and nobody deserves more to be in the hockey hall of fame than Steve Yzerman.

Hail to No.19.

Homer Stock Up

And I want to leave on a positive note, which is to say that I'm glad to see Homer off is off to a good start. There's not much talk about him here so far this season. Aside from his moshing in front of the crease his presence on the ice is kind of obscure. But he's quietly led the team in goals and was one of the few bright spots while the team stumbled out of the gate. He's my favorite Wing character-wise, and that's saying a lot because the DRWs are probably the best character team in the league. But I'm glad to see him at least not getting harped on in here like was going on toward the end of last season and playoffs. And I was one who thought he might be on the way out then, too.

Fri. 11/06/09 08:12 PM

LIENO

Last year Lieno debuted with a pretty cool goal, when he scored from Homer's office facing away from the goalie. I thought, yeah, Baby! we got something here. But he doesn't seem to be that type of player on a consistent basis. It's hard to say what his game is at this point. I'm not seeing a power player, nor a real quick or fast guy, or even a great puck handler. So I'm with whoever said he's still trying to find his game in the NHL.

jason williams sucks

I don't think J-Dub necessarily sucks, but he sure lacks identifiable positive characteristics. There's no excitement when he's on the ice, which is sad because he's probably a nice guy. I hated when he played against us last year, especially on the PP and this year I don't look forward to him being on the ice for the Wings. Guess he's kinda like family sometimes.

Overpaid

I'm happy with Tooz so far and expect his stats will eventually start to reflect the effort he is giving.

Crazy Uncle in the Basement

Andy Rooney on last night's game (which I liked, btw): Have you ever wondered WHY the Detroit Red Wings would wheel out Jason Williams for a good old fashion shootout? Wouldn't they have been better off signing Gordie Howe to a one game contract and letting him play in another decade, century, millenium???? And also having a chance at getting the into the back of the net?

Rebounds

November's off to a decent start. A banged up Red Wing team shuts out a banged up Bruin team at home. That's what you want to see. Last night's game showed some life.

How can you not like the way Homer's playing after the way he ended last season.

Z has maybe nine points in the last nine games and seems to be emerging into shape, Dats dazzled with a pass or two, Ozzie was good, and Lids seemed ok so the core leadership still appears capable.

Yeah, there's still some fixin' to do but I'm seeing effort out of the youngsters and the newbies and hopefully they'll start to meld in better and the team will continue to improve.
