You can probably write off a handful of teams in the west from being playoff-destined in April, so it seems as if we'll be a mid-seed playoff team because we are still better than plenty.
San Jose is a regular season team that might even seriously go deeper in the playoffs -- perhaps to the finals with an easier path (since the west got weaker & east is stronger), but they will never be SERIOUSLY cup-bound anytime soon.
Colorado is the biggest joke of a 2nd seed I've ever seen. I won't be surprised that when they fall, our seed placement will rise by one (as will everyone).
Chicago, Calgary & San Jose seem to be the biggest threats. Won't it be fun to NOT have home advantage for once? To finally bank on that "underdog" mentality and pull off game 7 upsets? Good thing the NHL is the only sport where the low seed often goes deep.
I think the east is a bit stronger with WSH & NJ probably meeting in the east finals. Buffalo is a joke as a 3rd seed at this moment. Phillie might be the team that gets in the way of the east winning the cup again. Pronger & the goons will do like the Ducks did to us last playoff and make it nearly impossible to be fresh enough to win it all.
That may make SJ's path easier, if the east destroys each other physically.

This season
The only thing I care about is seeing us in the 8th seed so our playoff streak continues, but I won't expect to be in the final four teams.
Next season should be great b/c of the cleared space.
Shootouts
Howard did great only letting in one, and the 3rd one too... he kept it going long enough that all 3 of our guys could shoot and they failed as usual.
Pathetic watching shootouts.
