Wings far too soft
Sugarloaf,
Id be competitive too if i would have in my line-up Malkin, Crosby, Staal, Gonchar and Fleury.
With this core is the supportive cast really that important ?
Wings far too soft
Sorry, I browsed Spector's Blog at lunch today. I got that Pitt free agent total completely bass-ackwards. Let the record show, I humbly eat crow.
Here is the quote:
Currently the Penguins have 13 players under contract for 2010-11, including core stars Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jordan Staal and Brooks Orpik, totaling over $41 million.
If the salary cap remains roughly around the current level of $56 million that should give them enough money to re-sign veteran blueliner Sergei Gonchar to either a one-year contract or perhaps a two-year deal worth close to his current cap hit of $5 million. Kris Letang will be due a significant raise, possibly in the $2.5 million per season range.
Provided key veterans Bill Guerin and Ruslan Fedotenko agree to similar salaries ($2 million and $1.8 million respectively) for another season or marginally higher they too could be retained.
Unfortunately those four could equate to roughly $11 million in cap space to retain, leaving them perhaps $4 million to flesh out the remainder of their roster.

Let's see how Shero does next year when he has, I think, 12-13 free agents to re-sign. I believe I read that on Spector's blog somewhere. Pens are enjoying the fruits of some very high draft choices right now. So, did Shero makes some good draft choices? Yep, but in all honesty, weren't some of those draft choices, no brainers (Crosby)?

To Dick Mc: I didn't mean to touch a sore spot on my reference to KH. I do have great respect for him but some of his moves since we entered the cap world has certainly not been exceptional (like before the cap) to say the least. Another GM that comes to mind that has made some decent moves is Ray Shero of the Pens. I hate to say and admit that but it is true. He lost some very good players this past couple years but still found a way to keep his team more than competitive and they appear to have a team that will challenge for all the silverware again this year.

Sugarloaf...KH is still the best GM in the game. That is the conventional wisdom. All GMs make hundreds of moves. Some work and some dont.It is easy to pick a perceived bad move to bolster an argument saying he isnt the best.My question to you would be what GM in the NHL is better than KH and why? My answer is that there is not one any better. Results wise KH is heads and shoulders above any current GM.

It's hockey...physical, full contact...
one more thing... Bert and Williams were signed before the season started.. Do you have anything current?

Good effort by the Wings last night especially by Osgood. This guy can play when he wants too and it has showed the past couple games. However the Wings took a bad beating physically as they did in Calgary. They were banged around far too much - they just do not have anybody to send out and deliver some justice. All teams know that the Wings play a skilled game and the only way they could compete is to play very aggressively against them knowing full well they will get away with it without being punished. Brad May is certainly not the answer - he's too small and has been around far too long to be a protector. On Ken Holland - he allows Sammy to walk but picks up Eaves, Williams and Big Bert. Wow, a real genius of a move! And I think it's about time Cleary started to earn some of the big bucks he is being paid. He haven't done much offensively since he inked the big deal. Wake up Holland - you can't buy players now like you used to - you just have to be a little smarter. You are supposed to be the BEST GM in the league or is that in the past?
