Very true. Who would have foreseen Huds getting that big offer from Russia? The same could happen to the Pitts or any other them next summer.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the the cap will recede a bit after the season also. The economy, although starting to heal a bit, still sucks and will affect hockey related income adversely IMO.
I feel that Ray Shero is a sharp cookie though. He's as good as anyone in the league right now IMO. And heck, a GM is only as good as his best 7 or 8 core players anyways. Where Shero is fortunate is that he has Fleury signed, sealed and delivered giving him a dependable, world class tender with a SC Cup ring on is finger. That is a HUGE plus.

I don't think Kronwall is a dirty player either. There were some times during the regular season I winced as he did leave his feet TO make contact instead of exploding up and through the contact and I'll be the first to admit he got away with a couple...of course other players have gotten away with much more
Wedge56
That's as good a post on the subject as I've read. It's about the same as I feel. The fact that he did leave his feet is obvious, but as you say it was "follow through". It was a good photo and I liked the "Kronwalled" thing. He is, for his size, an extremely great hitter. I'm a big fan of his and I don't think he's a dirty player.

Wedge said..""chelios-- he was signed before the hossa signing when we had some cap space, you are looking at it in hindsight, the chelios signing didn't put us against the cap, the hossa signing did, i didn't see you complaining about it at the time, "
Sorry there Wedge but you're misinformed. Cheli was signed way after Hossa's deal. That's what's so frustrating. I believe the last guy signed was Quincy, and Cheli was signed just before Q, and just before camp. Check it out.
I bitched up a storm then and said that we would be up against the cap for no good reason. One prominent poster here kept saying that "Cheli was the perfect #8 insurance policy". That turned out to be the hogwash that I said it would.

For the record, I have written on this board on more than one occasion...started with one opinion...someone else presented compelling evidence, and I changed my mind. Heck, sometimes I have even admitted that my original take was outright wrong.
I know, I'm weird that way. I'm the John Kerry of Wings Talk.
Wedge56
One last thing, Scout. I agree with Wedge. You bring value to this board. I like reading your opinions. But, the condescencion just isn't necessary; my take.
Wedge56
"I'm not going to argue with you."
--Really? Kinda sounds like you were in the rest of that post. Ha!
I'm just going to say that Huds COULD do everthing on the point on our #1 PP that Raf does. Huds is smart as a whip. I recongnize those things in players.
--Yep, and of course the all knowing Scout also knew that about Huds back when Rafs was signed and before Huds increased his point production in each of the last two seasons.
So much of what you say is based on what you know NOW and then you rip on KH because what is NOW is obvious. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but KH can't see the future. For the record, I still disagree that Huds could step in on the PP and be as effective as Rafs right off the bat.
"It's all in the eye and the knowledge, which YOU obviously don't have. Wedge, don't have fear of the things you don't know. Your reaction to my post is out of lack of real hockey knowledge, experience and talent appraisal ability, not out of any sort of knowledge that you have."
--Okay, when the other poster called you arrogant, I got kind of defensive because I think you contribute to this board something of value. However, these last few weeks especially, you have done nothing but repeat the same things over and over. Someone presents an opposing point?...then you just repeat the same things you have already repeated with little to no regard that someone...ANYONE may have a good take on a situation that is slightly different form yours. No acknowledgment to anyone that they may have a justifiable point, ever. You've brought up Rafs and his salary a million times, but when I ask you to compare his salary and production to other D-men...you just ignore that. That's just one example. Very troll-like. I've changed my mind. You are an arrogant prick.
Wedge56
"There's a kid on the Windsor Spits Jr A team who's 18."
Not to keep harping a point but the Spits aren't a Jr A team.
Wedge56
I don't know who you are or what you do, Scout. But, I know what I read. There are lots of smart folks on here. Why not just share what you know, rather than tell me how smart you are and how dumb some of the rest of us are? That will go a lot farther in establishing your hockey intellect than you telling me about it.
Seriously.
Wedge56
I'm not going to argue with you. I'm just going to say that Huds COULD do everthing on the point on our #1 PP that Raf does. Huds is smart as a whip. I recongnize those things in players. I had that ability and still do. There's a kid on the Windsor Spits Jr A team who's 18. His name is Matt Ellis. He's a D man with those same smarts and abilities.
The first time a I saw last year, not knowing anything about him, I knew he had "it". Now I see that central scouting has his projected as a first rounder, maybe 23rd overall, going to Chicago.
It's all in the eye and the knowledge, which YOU obviously don't have. Wedge, don't have fear of the things you don't know. Your reaction to my post is out of lack of real hockey knowledge, experience and talent appraisal ability, not out of any sort of knowledge that you have.

I think that KH is the subject. A sentence can't be a sentence without it's subject. If you take the first four words out, it still works..
"(I am sure that) KH has learned a valuable lesson in the Quincy fiasco."
The first four words by themselves mean nothing. The sentence past those first words can stand alone. I am sure of what? "KH has learned a valuable lesson.." That's the sentence. Who learned the lesson? Not me! I'm only modifying the sentence to state that I'm sure of the action to KH happened.
Just trying to rile you back there Wedge! LOL

"...What was clear to me is that the 3rd period was an extension of the two Saturday night games where we were pathetic..." ...and that Phoenix game that they just barely squeaked by in...That Columbus game on the heels of Nashville probably rocked them a little...
Wedge56
Fair enough, Scout. To each his own. I still think they failed in what they were doing, obviously. I also saw several opportunities for the Wings to go on the offensive which they uncharacteristically didn't take which seems to indicate to me they were under some directive from the coaching staff.
They have been known to blow leads and I think Babs was trying something different because as has sooooo often been pointed out on this forum, what they have been doing hasn't always been working.
Wedge56
"but it's clear to me they were working on how to close out a game for the playoffs." -Wedge56
That's what was clear to you? Practicing on something during a game? I do no concur.
What was clear to me is that the 3rd period was an extension of the two Saturday night games where we were pathetic. That third period was just as pathetic as those Saturday night games. I can't see why you are making excuses for that terrible play. Zero shots on goal for the period before the last minute or two? Absolutey inexcusible IMO.
Wedge56
Scout: I'm no big proponent of loyalty in pro sports as you can tell. Sports is business first, soft heart second. In fact, I have been openly critical of KH here on this forum just BECAUSE he has that soft heart sometimes.
--That's fine, but you do realize that it's that soft heart or at the idea that players know they will be treated fairly is the kind of thing that enables us to sign guys like Zetterberg for a six million dollar cap hit and makes guys like Hossa want to be here. The winning helps, too, but there have been other winning franchises that were unable to keep their guys like the Ducks and the Penguins most recently.
