Wedge 56 - Pitts Cap for next year
Wedge, Well, I should hope so, because I'm laying it on pretty thick (Richard Hayden)! haha Not aimed at your direction though, just in general
Wedge 56 - Pitts Cap for next year
the ironic thing about Pittsburgh is that this was the club screaming hardest during the lockout that it can't afford to keep it's top guys because salaries are so hyperinflated. And what do they do? They give Crosby and Malkin nearly the max allowable per season as soon as they're off their entry level deals. This obviously forces them to part with the majority of their quality role players. They honestly looked at no scoring Brooks Orpik and said he should get paid nearly 4 mill per season: the same amount most teams pay a defenseman who gets them 40-50 points per year, in addition to killing penalties. Not to forget: Jordan Staal getting 3.5 a season and hasn't even cracked the 50 point mark and hasn't been close to 30 goals since his rookie season. In my mind, any captain has a duty to look around the league and take a paycut for the sake of his team getting better and staying that way.
This off season, they lost what was probably the best shut-down defensive pair in all the post-season and the season before that. As nutty as it may look for the Red Wings to sign players long term, each player Detroit has given big money to has produced, and produced in the playoffs. The Red Wings were able to keep nearly all of their Stanley Cup winning team because of how smart Ken Holland is with the cap, as well as the players knowing they need to take less for the sake of the team remaining competitive. But it's no longer folks like Detroit getting the blame for running up salaries. It's ironically teams like Pittsburgh.

Milhouse--Do I sense sarcasm? I'm unsure who you are counterpointing. I misquoted an article I had briefly glanced through yesterday and immediately printed a retraction and corrected myself when I went back and read it more thoroughly. Then Nick and I agreed that the Pens weren't in as much trouble with the salary cap as Spector's article seemed to think they were, which, is also what you are saying isn't it?
I did go so far as to say Shero had the benefit of some high draft picks, but I don't think I ever accused him of being a second rate or worse GM.
Anyways, just wondering if I was missing something. S'all good.

"Assuming that the Pitts re-up Fedotenko, Guerin, Gonchar and Letang"... "they will need only 5 guys to fill out a 22 man roster at and average salary of $800K each."
Wow, I didn't know how bad it had gotten in Pittsburgh. Stanley cup winner one year, the dream is over, time to rebuild the next.
Let me see if I understand the situation, this second rate GM locks up a solid core and is then looking to surround them with veterans he knows and will take discounted short term deals, seriously who does that? To make it worse, this putrid strategy leaves him with so little room that he has to fill 5 spots with $800k players, OMG!!!! Doesn't he understand that only players like Maltpy, Eaves, and Lebda types play for $800k? I bet he's going to try and groom 2-3 rookies at the same time! Putrid, the Pens are in trouble, serious serious trouble, you could say Ginormous trouble and Shero has taken the thrown as the worst GM in hockey. Cleary he was Super Mario's Puppet for years, now on his own, look what he's done. I'd hate to read their forums right now!

Nick, yes, I had to paste some of the article on the board because I had previously misquoted it. I agree, Pitts isn't in that bad a shape. I doubt the salary cap will remain static again, but things also happen like....the KHL comes in and offers one of your FA's 2.5 X more than they are worth, or someone gets their feelings hurt due to ice time...etc.
I doubt it will be as easy as Spector thinks to re-sign that group he listed in that article.

Correction to the post of last night"
that sentence in that post makes more sense when it reads:
"Assuming that the Pitts re-up Fedotenko, Guerin, Gonchar and Letang for the $11,000,000 total or less,"
not
"Assuming that the Pitts re-up Fedotenko, Guerin, Gonchar and Letang for the $11,000 total or less,"
Sorry 'bout that.

Assuming that the Pitts re-up Fedotenko, Guerin, Gonchar and Letang for the $11,000 total or less, they will need only 5 guys to fill out a 22 man roster at and average salary of $800K each. I don't see a problem there if the cap stays at around $56 mil. I think that they have a great core signed for next year which includes a top class goalie.
