I get your point with the excessive G & D'ers. I try to see both sides myself. There are some very specific things that I can't stand about the Wings, but not every aspect of the club. When they worked their butts off against SJ the other night I said so. I even took my hat off to Patrick Eaves for grabbing that third star of the game, even though I thought Ozzie deserved it for the shoot out win. But I still can't believe Ozzie didn't get it!! LOL!

Nick, I understand your excitement over the youngsters, and to a certain extent your disappointment over the fact that some of these teams are playing at very high energy levels and the teams are looking as if they are prospering. Answer me this? At what point would you have dismantled the Wings during the last 5 years to take chances on newbies? In the last 3 years they (Wings) were legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup. Do you say no to Hossa so we can keep newbies? Do you risk losing players on waivers in order to bring up someone who can be the next "star"? If the Wings were languishing mid pack in the last 16 years, I could understand your questions. But for someone who has been in the field of hockey, with the change to salary cap, and knowing the Wings are recently the most succesful franchise in the NHL, why do you isolate certain instances and dog on KH as if he is operating in a vacuum? If it is for discussion, great. But I suspect that in your narrow view of KH's supposed shortcomings, while you sort of poke fun at us ordinary fans, you are revealing that your knowledge of Wing's history and circumstances is short sighted.

If and when the rebuilding begins, we will have ample opportunity to take a first hand look at these new ones. Up until now it simply has not been as necessary for the Wings as it has been for the Aves and the Kings, among others. There are still quite a few teams who are on the outside looking in, and will be come playoff time.

Nick,

You are depressing. I cant believe i went through another of your negative post about the Wings, there players and the brass . And i cant believe you dont understand the way its works between two teams; one has no cup expectation and the other has. One has plenty of proven vets on his line-up the other has none ! its easy to give a chance to rookies when you have plenty of open spots on the roster, when you have no expectation, you are in a rebuilding mod like the Avs are. I wouldnt be surprise to see Ferraro become a much better player thatn O'Reilly (or more valuable) in a few of seasons from now.

We can wait...they cant !

While I can't speak for Grand Junction's exact phrasing, I get the point he is making, and I agree with it. If we had drafted Ryan O'Reilly like we SHOULD have, he would be languishing in GR serving his "getting overipe" sentence for having been drafted by Detroit.

Instead, O'Reilly is playing on a young and exciting Avs team that just keeps on winning (They won again last night in a shootout over Chicago).

Landon Ferraro, who we took just before the Avs grabbed O'Reilly, is years away from the NHL. Where is he? Back in juniors! In comparison, O'Reilly has 14 points in his first 18 games and is plus 13.

Sometime soon I'm thinking that Mike Ilitch is going to be scheduling a meeting and assessing these decisions that are being made by "the worlds best GM in all of sports that ever lived" Ken Holland. The Avs are feasting off of Q and O'Reilly, both of whom should be wearing DRW uniforms right now. We HAD one of them, and we shunned the other one for puny Landon Ferraro.

But Grand Junctions point is correct: Even if we had drafted O'Reilly, KH would have him in GR for his "overipening".

Spec: Landon Ferraro: 5'-10" x 165 lbs, now playing back in Juniors. Taken #32 in 2009 by Detroit

Spec: Ryan O'Reilly: 6'-0" x 200 lbs, now playing in NHL for Avs. Taken #33 in 2009 by Avs. 14 NHL points in his first 18 NHL games. ZERO time in the AHL.

And here in Detroit, we're excited because Patrick Eaves got an assist and was third star in his last game! Man, have we ever lowered our excitement standards here in this town!!

PC... read my last (and final) post on Eaves. It was addressed to Edge 11, but you can change to the name of who I addressed it to to "PC".

If you guys like him, be my guest.

Screening the goalie is one thing, and if you do it, you should expect a good beating. They used to say "the goalie was screened" in the old days, but those screens were caused by the action in the crease if front of the goalie, and with the old rules, nobody just stood there for free. But what Homer now does is over the edge. He shifts freely with the goalie, and lines up with the puck's incoming shooting angle. Why not just have the goalie play with a bag over his head. Would that make you happier?

In watching the preseason games, who impressed you most of our guys that are now in GR? I know who impressed me. In other words, let me know who you saw out there that had an NHL future in your opinion.

Got ya... thanks. and I agree with Gary about having a tough guy. But I also agree with KH's thinking in that if we have a tough guy, he needs to be able to play a little hockey too. And Brad May isn't an embarrassment out there on his shifts. He can play some hockey too IMO. I like the signing.

Who's Gary and why would be care that we signed Brad May?

Bettman? What am I missing here?

Thanks PC.... IMO, our competition figured it out last year, especially in the PO's: we were chasing high on PK, probably from the overcomp thing, and so the opposition was stacking three down low and behind our net where they had the odd-man advantage a lot of the time. In the Pitts series, the PP attack and passes seemed to be coming more from the low boards, making passes across the zone, behind the net, and across the crease, not as much from the points. The points in that case are decoys as much as cannons.

PC I'm not done with you yet about Filppula :D

I was driving around town, working and couldnt give thoughtful answer, I agree that every player has his own timetable when he start blossoming. Very much possible Fil some day may become a player better then Franzen but that was my point when I said he didnt fill his new shiny shoes (big contract). If you remember at the time Fil signed new contract majority here were agree that he got more money then he earned so far but was expected to make one up every year and by the end of his contract to be a"steal" for the money he would be paid. To make it more dificult for you I'll give you only 2 choices:

-NO he didnt make a step forward (may be even little step backward)- means didnt fulfill his expectations last year

-YES he become a better player last year, bettered his money/delivered goods ratio

So what would be your answer?

remember we are talking about last season, not new one or future seasons.

It must have some other time that we were struggling then; I thought it was during that bad run. But I distinctly recall Bab's pairing Raffie with Kronner for a few games. Might have been last year. But it sucked. I recall posting about the fact that Raffie HAD to have a HOF partner. I suspect that a player as great as you make Raffie out to be should be defensively able to do some PK work. When was the last time you saw Babs use Raffie on PK?. He's just too weak in the red zone, as I've always said, thus the need for the great partners.

Raffie and Kronner were partnered a few times during that bleak period of February 8, 2008 to February 29, 2008 when we lost 10 of 11 games. Babs tried a bunch of pairings including Raffie and Cheli also. Both were sad endings.

Raffie alsways has had a H.O.F. partner. Raffie has got to be the luckiest player in the history of the NHL to have has Stevens, Neidermayer and Lids as his partner for the VAST majority of the games he's played in the NHL. But it is a necessity IMO, especially in our own end.
