Osgood

I am amazed that people are hanging the Wings problems on goaltending. Neither Osgood or Howard were responsible for the last two loses. With the Wings only scoring one goal in each of those games you are asking the goalies to be perfect while no one else on the ice, including the referees are held to that expectation. Cross ice passes for one timers are not soft goals. I would expect every team works to get that play because it works so well.

Lets not panic the Wings have made a lot of changes this season and more than they wanted with the injuries. They have been inconsistent which is what I expected from them at the start even before the injuries. They have tightened up defensively which has reduced their production for now. I for one believe they are heading in the right direction. They do need someone to step up and pot some goals other than just Dats, Z or Holmstrom. Bert and Lieno have got to step up for sure.

For years I've been backing Ozzie. But his time is up. Regardless of HOW he plays or if he wins or loses, the fact is that he gets out-performed by the other goalie EVERY SINGLE GAME HE PLAYS IN!

Sure, he did fine last night until he let in a soft goal from the exact same spot he let in a softie the last OT he was in. I don't care if it was the best shot ever. Fact is, the VISITING goalie stopped 39 shots and osgood stopped 18.

At this point, Ozzie is a back-up goaltender. I just hope howard can keep it up.

was thrown off by Cleary in front of the shooter. He was in the proper position for the shot. S____ happens.

OSGOOD

until Osgood is steady the wings will be lucky to make playoffs. Osgood is hot & cold team can not depend on him. Also Red Wings seem to lack leadership. LONG LONG SEASON.

Ozzie was sharp tonight.... except for the lone goal.

IMHO Osgood is not NHL caliber. He did well in the playoffs yes, but he elevated his game simply to playing like a decent goalie should. He was NOT OUTSTANDING nor did he win games for us or carry the team. Games won mean sh#@t when you have a strong team in front of you. Save % and GAA are the indicators. If was not for the Red Wing politics Osgood could not get a job on another team. Cant he be sent to Grand Rapids and we bring up Larsson or McCollum before they become "minor league goalies"? Maybe Howard will shine. I hope so, but my fear is they will keep giving Osgood the nod because he has been a "loyal Red Wing"

Babcock said: "it's not physiacal; it's between the ears. We'll keep runing him out there."

Many of you dislike Babcock. I think he's one of the best coaches in the NHL. His Canadian peers think he's the best for the Olympics job. He says, Osgood will be fine. I believe his career suggests that he will as well. He's not suddenly lost it. But, he has to be better than this this year. Still, look at the losses and the goal scored. Everyone needs to be better; period.

Nick: I believe Rafalski will end up as a HOF. I also believe Osgood's numbers will put him there. Having said thaqt, both these guys need to be way better. But, so too, does your boy Ericsson. He has looked dreadful this year. I don't buy your pairing arguments. If that's the case, then why does everyone, I mean everyone look better with Lids?

Pierre -

"Shawn do you really want to go through another of "Osgood type of season" again ?"

No way my friend :) The bottom line is we have Osgood and Howard, not quite the goaltending tandem you'd like to have but reality is we have it. As a team, our strategy should be to deal with what we have and plan around that unless KH makes some kind of a deal. We should know the weakness of the team and netminding. If you know you have a cardboard cut out in net wouldnt you want to eliminate shots against? Play better defensively in front of him, eliminate D zone turnovers, knock people on thei butts around the net and keep the puck 200ft away from your own net?

We're not exactly lighting the lamp at the other end of the rink so if we can't offset GAA with offense lets make it up the otehr way :)

Shawn i greatly respect your opinion. But what really killed us last night ? the OT goal i hope. We played a great game and deserved better.

How many goals like that Osgood has allowed so far ? Too many ! one or two per game.

I didnt see him making many important saves last night. 33 shots you say ? how many were really that dangerous.

Shawn do you really want to go through another of "Osgood type of season" again ?

well I admit he miss played the OT winner Pierre but in all honesty I thought he played well up until that point. I think it was Ken or Larry Murphy who were saying the same and that Ossie could be the player of the game...up until the OT issue :) I know your a netminder and feel the world revolves around the goaltender but the team is doing little to help out. 2 goals scored, one but popcorn butter'er and one on the PP. 33 shots given up and poor team play late in the game. While netminding is a big part of it, its not the sole reason here in my opinion.

--Osgood cant admit any wrong doing;

..."It's frustrating. We played pretty good the last couple of games, we haven't been rewarded for it,'' Osgood said.

--Yeah...maybe you have something to say about it !

..."We feel like we've been snake-bit a little bit. These things over the course of the year kind of even themselves out. So we have to not get down, I think we're playing pretty good.''"

--And then on the winning goal;

"I went to steer (the puck) in the corner, it hit my stick and kind of ramped (up), took a bounce and hit my arm and went in the net,'' Osgood said. "I feel really good, feel like I'm trending upwards, just can't get a break right now.''

--Cant you just say you played it bad and you shouldnt have allowed it ? No need to go into some scientific explanations as to what happened. To open your right arm or box it on a shot to the blocker side is peewee stuff.

I have followed the Wings since 1945-46 season.I've had season tickets at Olympia and Joe Louis arena.But this year I have lost interest in the Team.Because Of Osgood,he stinks He has some kind of hold on Holland.I'm tired of Mickey saying about his record,he has had strong defense in front of him. The other teams dumped him fast,they could see he was awful.Mitzi

ossie looked ok in ist two periods cause he had nothing to do but he was his usual self flopping around in the 3rd and looking like the peewee he is.we need a diferent defence coach too ar our defence hasn,t been the same under this coach .i think the players are too complacent with babcck lately and aren,t giving full value .our experirnce back of the blueline is way too soft and by the way where are our young legs. all the other teams have 18 and 19 year olds that can skate fast and aren,t tired in the 3rd period like our vold softies are .maybe we,ll make the playoffs but our team with the additions is very weak and we better get rid of meech and lebda as they never will be much good .ossie is not going to win many games the way he played last night and his i don,t care attitude is rubbing off on others ,rafalski looks very slow this year and lids likewise is saving himself for a couple more years .forum members we are in trouble .holland has done a poor job recently
