YESSSS!!!

Hockey Maven: Finishing 25th and getting into the draft lottery may be how teams in your state do it (Pittsburgh), but that is not how its done in HockeyTown. Winning, getting into the playoffs every year is better than being a bottom feeder for a decade to get a Crosby and a Malkin.

On another note, the Canadiens would be smart to start their back up goalie tonight as the Wings have made Auld and Clemmensen look like Brodeur the past 2 games.

Re: Babcock wants them to take more shots

How many of those hard angle shots down low became turnovers or chances for Florida to clear on the power play? Change the angle to higher in the circle and you can at least hope for a rebound. We need a quality shot mentality, rather than the "coach told me to shoot from everywhere" we're seeing.

grinders and grunts

I hear you nick, drew miller looks like a decent hockey player but not a threat at all. What concerns me is if Dats and Z cool off over the next couple years there has to be the next young crop of forwards that can pot some goals. In other words, you can't have all your young forwards be grunts or grinders. Its early, but its difficult to think of helm or leino or eaves being a 20 goal scorer soon. Yes, you need the ice time to excel, but ofcourse you have to score more goals to get more ice time. I was thinking maybe cleary or fil could pot 30 this year, with some luck, but that aint going to happen. I agree with the poster who says its strange to see this much skill playing for garbage goals. That's admitting to yourself that many forwards here couldn't do otherwise. They need to find a way to get some more flow and chemistry. Don't see much vision or creativity from babcock on the decisions and strategy. The injuries and UFA defections created this team but there sure have been a lot of very non-entertaining games this year.

NHL Commissioner

The outright hatred and disrespect (both well earned) for Gary Bettman was evident way back in the mid-90's when he first entered this once great league. His plans back then of eliminating self policing (fighting), massive southern expansion, and filling in all the voids with figuer skating type Europeans immediatelly set off red lights all over the North American hockey world. Remember his mantra? "The way the game is supposed to be played." As we all knew then, it was already being played the way the Canadian inventers intended.

If the golie wanted to venture out of the net to play the puck he went at his own risk. If someone wanted to take a cheapshot at a star player, he knew he would have to be willing to pay the consequences. The NHL ice back than was a place for the elite of the elites and the toughest of the tough. Our league back then was a little smaller, but a lot stronger. Those days are no more.

In my opinoin I believe that it's not the loyalty of the hometown fans that make the NFL, NBA, and MLB so strong. It's the fans of these leagues that just love to watch to good teams battle each other to the end. To be entertained.

Under Bettman this league is no longer entertaining. The seasoned fans notice these deplorable calls and are not buying the just as deplorable excuses. This has become more evident on hockey boards in other NHL towns to the unbiased fans (what's left of them). Fans are pretty much just sticking to watching only their home team play. That's the sad state Bettman has brought on this league. My point is...What Does It Take To Get Rid Of HIm? What Owners Are Backing Him? What Percentage Of Owners Does It Take To VOTE HIM OUT? Would appreciate if those of you who know would enlighten the rest of us.

Thank You, and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Re: Babcock wants them to take more shots

One in 40 goes in. Lets see= 120 shots would give them three goals. Thats about right considering where they shoot from and always into the pads. Why do the Wings always make an average tender look like a hot goalie? He could have stacked his pads and left them in the crease and went out to a bar last night. Babcock wants more? I would be happy with 20 quality shots.

Mike Babcock wants Wings to take more shots

"Mike Babcock wants Wings to take more shots" (-Headline DetNews)

What, 40 wasn't enough last night Mike? It's not the quantity of shots being taken by the Wings, it's the quality of the shots and where they're being taken from.

IMO, if you looked at the shot chart that the backup goalie keeps, it would look like a big horseshoe in our end with the open end of the horseshoe being down on the goal line. We seem to be shooting very little from the slot. There are lots of shots from right and left wings and the points. But those are not the most dangerous shots in the sport IMO.

Bottom line: Fla won with 20 shots. What did we need? 60 shots to win? We maybe need to adjust the attack tonight and start to shoot from the slot a little more.

Goal Scoring

To be a an elite team in for a Cup run, a team must have 4 or 5 twenty goal scorers. Guys that can bury the puck when needed.

Right now, the Wings are clearly hurting without a sufficient number of players who can consistently score!

This team needs a concentration of Firepower with 4 or 5 players; otherwise, it's too much of a random and chaotic effort.

In years past, the Wings, in fact, any top team always had 4 or 5 guys who would score 20 or more goals - - that would solve a lot of short comings on this team primarily puck possession in both ends of the rink.

Raf

Yep.. Zet was. And Lids was chasing shadows too, but for Raf to just pass the puck to that first forchecker on the boards and then stand back to watch the results was pretty bad.

Sat. 11/21/09 11:01 AM

Raf

Zetterberg was also pretty soft on that one....

Injuries/Goalies

Jiggy makes $6 mil per year. We don't have the cap space at this time. The last time I saw him play (I think it was against Pitts) he wasn't that good.

Raf

I was appalled when I saw it in person, and seeing the video is even worse. That was just horrible defensive play by Raf on Weiss's goal. disgraceful. Raf should have had an assist on the goal. -2 night for my favorite NHL defenselessman.

Buddy Blueline

Buddy.. you brought up a good point when you said maybe it's time to see what Jeremy Williams can do up here.

I was at the game last night, so I had a good chance to watch Drew Miller all over the ice on his shifts. He seems like a good hockey player, but that's it...just "good". Did we really need another 3rd/4th liner? How many do we have now?

KH seems to have a hangup on bringing up players once he sends them down to GR. Like, they never return! When we purchased Miller I posted the statement that in doing so, KH has pretty much admitted that the depth guys that he picked this summer off the UFA list and the guys he has drafted in the past are just not up to snuff in his opinion or in the opinion of Jim Nill or whoever.

Drew Miler was waived by Tampa and let go by Anaheim for a reason, and I think it's that he has slow hands, and doesn't play as big as he is. He's got some size, but doesn't use it much. And he's not a speed merchant either. Just another average player, which we already have plenty of.

Miller's on a two-way contract. Maybe he should go down and we bring up Jeremy Williams. Williams seems to know how to score if nothing else, and when Zet isn't scoring in this team, nobody is!

Sat. 11/21/09 10:45 AM

good riddance

Not jumping ship, just frustrated with the lack of chemistry after 20 games. Passing and anticipation should be much better by now. We are far too predictable, piling up shots on goal from bad angles, and basically having two lines that have real problems contributing offensively. The talent level is down for a variety of reasons, but the style of hockey we're playing right now is hard to watch at times. It still looks like a team that is trying to play a scheme it is not equipped for. Like most teams, when it's all working, it's great. We're just used to it working more often.

Injuries/Goalies

With some players out I do think they are ok until those players come back. I really can't wait tell Franz is back. Boy the forwards do miss him. That was probably the worse news the Wings could have had in the last 2 years with him going out.

I guess from a positive stand point it seasons the younger players a little more and may make us a little more stronger. It's quite possible we could see the Wings get stronger and stronger as the year goes and we get players back little by little.

A question to the forum. Would it be possible to trade for Jiggy from the Ducks? He seems unhappy their but it would put us on top if we had him. Any thoughts??

I am starting to get worried about the Wings goalie situation. We will have to get a solid goalie down the line. Either before the trade dead line or next year. That has got to be Hollands priority over the next year.

Deja Vu All Over Again...

Sure gets tedious, dosen't it? Out-play an opponent but ultimely lose in the end. Is it a mental thing? Is it the "system"? It will take Franzen, Williams and Filpula time to re-hab and get their "game-legs" back. That may take them past the Olympic break. IMO the Wings will be scrambling at the end of the season just to make the playoffs. By that time they might be tired out. Wish I was as optimistic as some posters, but I'm not. Not with the current product I see.
