The way out for DD
Labor contracts have the highest priority in a bankruptcy proceeding. Higher than money owed to the Government. They'd have to sell the assets of the corporation, including the team, and pay the players.
BK- the TEAM did better without Sheff than they did with him. Half of one good season for $ 42 million.
And tomorrow's vote won't be close. Mauer over Cheter in a landslide. Derek goes in on the first ballot, though. No question about that, just keep things in perspective.
Miggy and Inge for Morales, Kendrick, and Izturis. Then spend the savings on Figgins. Steal the whole Angels infield for one guy and a glove!

And how many WINS did the TEAM have with Sheff?
Take a playoff team, add Sheff, and you get a runner up, and then a LAST place finish. Let him go, and you get back into a tie for first after 162. Sheff went to the National League, where he BE LONGS. He MIGHT get a job next year. Or he might not. One half of a good season, for $ 42 million. Splendid.
DD's Free Agents
Since the end of the 2006 Season.
Adam Everett, $ 1 million for ONE season
Matt Treanor, $ 700 K for ONE season
Brandon Lyon, $ 4.25 million for ONE season
Francisco Cruceta, $ 400 K for ONE season
Jose Mesa, $ 2 million for ONE season
Sean Casey, $ 4 million for ONE season
Kenny Rogers, $ 8 million for ONE season
Todd Jones, $ 7 million for ONE season
THAT'S IT FOLKS! Splendid!

If Polanco's going to the Dodgers, or anywhere else, I hope they announce it this month, so the Tigs at least get a pair of top 50 draft picks.
But the Tigers won't sign Hudson or any other decent free agent. Not a hope in hell. He'll want a multi year deal, and DD hasn't signed a single free agent to a multi year contract the last three winters. Not even one of our own.
Besides, Polanco is better than Hudson. Torre was running Raffy's little brother out there in his place by the time the season finished.
DDummy's false dilemma...
Boondock Saints- good flick.
The sequel was decent also. ALL SAINTS DAY
The accents were a little shaky for one that is raised in an Irish community, but overall a couple of very entertaining flicks. Sorta like Charles Bronson with a brogue.
DDummy's false dilemma...
Maybe George Goebel could do a better job, Philly!
Or Peter Marshall's kid, who played for the Royals. Name's Pete LaCock. I can see why he got himself a stage name for the Squares.
Not Paul Lynde, though. That laugh would never fly in a man's sport.
DDummy's false dilemma...
Splendid Job?
Sheffield, 3 years, $ 42 million, for what?
Bonderman, 4 years, $ 40 million, for what?
Willis, 3 years, $ 22 million, for what?
Robertson, 3 years, $ 21 million, for what?
Guillen, 4 years, $ 48 million, for what?
WHAT had ANY of these guys done the year before they signed to warrant those contracts?
Just look at what they did! Willis was the worst starter in the NL with a 5.10 ERA and a 1.60 WHIP. Sheffield spent most of the season on the DL. Robertson and Bonderman were a couple seasons from becoming free agents, and weren't near ACE status. Guillen was supposed to be a great hitting SS.
Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez for Edgar Renteria?
The DD says he was "surprised" at Edgar's lack of range, even though it was no worse in '08 than it was in '07.
Just bad judgment on every single contract.
Magglio's $ 18 million option vests, for 9 homers, 55 RBI, and no defense?
And now DD claims to be strapped for cash?
Not enough to offer arbitration to a gold glove, great contact hitter in Polanco? For fear that he might get $ 6 million for one year?
Yet he signs one of the worst hitters in the entire game at SS?
With Inge hitting under .190 three months in a row, and not a plan B anywhere to be found? And Laird all in the same lineup?
$ 72 million in BAD contracts- players that no other club would take for free because their contracts are so bad. So now we have to read about how attendance was down. Yeah, down from record levels, in a season after the team finished LAST, despite a payroll that was so high that they had to pay a luxury tax on it.
Attendance was down, from record levels in 2008, but was fourth highest in the league, and fourth highest in the 109 year history of the Tigers! With the highest ticket prices in club history!
With THAT payroll in THIS division, DD should have at least one division title by now. He's getting beat by clubs with half the payroll, and now he cries poverty! Splendid.
Just a Day Away From My Man Jeter Gettin' His 1st MVP In His HOF Career
I like my 2003 Ford Escape. Best feature? It's PAID for. No car payment. Being above the traffic is cool, too. I don't think I could go back to ground level.
The interviews between innings are great. Casey Stengel now, Leo Duroscher last night, Earl Weaver, Gil Hodges... great stuff. Nolan Ryan in from the bullpen now, and Tommy Agee's diving catch with the bases loaded. A classic!
Just a Day Away From My Man Jeter Gettin' His 1st MVP In His HOF Career
We didn't get to see every game back in the day like we can now, Knockers. I'd look forward to the Saturday "Game of the Week" with Curt Gowdy and Tony Kubek. I also remember a Grapefruit league game on the radio where the Mets beat our heroes 12- 0. Ray Lane was saying "they've got some real talent on this Mets team" and I'm sayin "yeah, right". I couldn't stand the Orioles, though. Never had the same feeling about the Cards or the Red Sox as I did for Baltimore. Boog Powell was the big man. I traded his card for about five or six mets. I was gonna put him in my spokes with a clothes pin if I couldn't trade him.
Add
I don't know how long you give a new coach to implement his "new system" in the NCAA. At least long enough to put "his team" on the field, I guess. They won't can Rich Rod after just a couple of seasons, but it's do or die time next fall. I didn't have a good vibe about this guy the way he ditched West Virginia, the way he came in saying he didn't care if Ryan Mallett, maybe the best young QB in the country, left for Arkansas. Maybe his "system" isn't gonna work in the Big Ten- ever. Charlie Weis gets the boot, but Rich Rod gets one more season. For better or worse. In the end, they'll both be gone.
Now Showing
ON the MLB network: The 1969 Miracle Mets vs the Orioles in game 3 of the World Series. They showed Bob Gibson's 17 strikeout performance in the '68 series against the Tigers last night, but the difference in the telecasts makes it look like they're from two different eras. The '68 film was still black n white, while the '69 series is in living color. 1969 was a transition year of sorts for MLB- the first season that they broke the leagues into two divisions. The first time they had an LCS. In the prior season, the Tigers won a ten team race (by a dozen games over Baltimore) and went straight into the seven game series against the Cards. I love watching this stuff. Luck the Fions.
Notre Dame and Michigan
What I meant to say there is the ND needs to move on from Weis, and Rich Rod gets another season to put it together.
Add- it wasn't a good sign for Michigan when Ryan Mallett, one of the best young QB's in the country, left for Arkansas because he couldn't be fit into the "new system", and a few others followed suit. I was never on the "Bo is God" bandwagon, nor the "fire Lloyd" bandwagon, either.
Notre Dame and Michigan
What started out looking like maybe a couple of decent seasons for both of my favorite college football teams, has turned to disappointment for both of them. Notre Dame escaped with some close victories, and were in every game all season down to the wire. Michigan started out 4- 0, including what I thought was a lucky win against ND, but then took a couple of tough losses at MSU and Iowa as part of a 1- 7 end to a bad season.
I'm not one of those that wants Charlie Weis or Rich Rod to get canned, but I think they have to move on from him. They need to get an up n coming young college football head coach that can recruit and run schemes. I thought that Weis was going to be a great choice when he was first hired. I don't see coaching as the problem at ND. I think that they don't have the personnel on defense to stop anyone, let alone the top schools in the country. They're just not an elite program, and haven't been for years.
Rodriguez, whom I like less than Weis as far as personal feelings go, deserves another year to see if he can put his system in place at Michigan. He came over from West Virginia under iffy circumstances, having to be bought out of his previous commitment, and he's never gotten traction with his system. But college football doesn't allow much for new systems. The team turns over 25% of personnel every season. It's time for Rich Rod's team to step up and win a Big Ten title. And he needs to beat Ohio State.
Why Not Offer Arbitration to Washburn?
Washburn dropped out of Type B status to "unranked" in the final Elias rankings, so there would be no compensation for him if he were to decline arbitration. He's in the same boat as Adam Everett, and there is no benefit to offering arbitration to him. Aubrey Huff is still a Type B free agent, so the Tigers could get a "sandwich round" draft pick for him, but there is no way he would decline arbitration, since he would get far above his market value as a free agent- somewhere around last year's $ 8 million salary.
Polanco, on the other hand, would probably get $ 6 to 7 million for one season. He may accept, and then have to settle for a one year deal, which he really doesn't want to do at age 34. The Tigers should be glad to have him on those terms, and would receive TWO top 50 picks should he decline and sign elsewhere.
Charlie Weis
Toast.
