Lineup

If we're sorting by 2008 OPS+, Curtis is CG1. Hopefully the CGs are better next year if they're still Tigers.

Lineup

In 2009 the Tigers had only 2 players (MC,MO) with at least 300 PAs and an OPS+ above league average. In 2008, 6 players (MC,MO,CG1,CG2,MT,PP) achieved this modest standard.

Strikes

Justin ranked a close second in the AL in Zone% (53.9%) to Baker (54.0%). It's interesting how his number of wins increases with his Zone%.

2009 53.9%, 19W

2007 53.4%, 18W

2006 52.4%, 17W

2008 50.0%, 11W

Since it's getting a little random in here,

hopefully people won't complain about this off-the-wall post. I received a box yesterday from my Mom with my old strat-o-matic cards which hadn't seen action since the 70's. I found some dice in a backgammon set and decided to have some fun. I remember how I bought the 1968 cards a few years after the fact for a $66 bid using money I'd saved up selling golf balls. Today seemed like a good day to relive the 1968 World Series. The first two games were in St. Louis.

.

Game 1: McLain versus Gibson. The score was 0-0 when Don Wert led off the Detroit 5th by reaching on an error by Shannon at third and McLain followed by pushing his sacrifice attempt past a charging Cepeda for an infield single. After McAuliffe and Stanley flied out, Kaline singled up the middle for the first run of the game and Cash followed with another hit for a 2-0 lead. After giving up two singles in the second, McLain retired 19 of the next 20 with the only blemish a triple by future announcer Tim McCarver in the 7th. Kaline led off the 8th with a home run for his 4th hit and the only earned run off Gibson to make it 3-0. A walk and an error brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th, but McLain finished up the 3-hit complete game shutout by fanning Shannon for his 9th strikeout.

.

Game 2: Lolich versus Briles. Lolich struck out the side in the 3rd but allowed 2 singles and 2 walks as St. Louis took a 1-0 lead. The Cardinals extended the lead to 3-0 in the 6th on a double by Ron Davis and Dal Maxvill's sac fly. Meanwhile Wert had left a runner at third with 1 out in both the 2nd and 4th as I was reminded of the 2009 Tigers. I resisted the temptation to hit for Lolich in the 7th since I didn't want to burn power threat Gates Brown down 3 with the bases empty and the other options on the bench were less than appealing. The Tigers didn't score in the 7th but Lolich retired Brock, Javier, and Flood in order in the Cardinal 7th. Detroit finally reached Briles in the 8th. Cash led off with a hit and Horton homered to make it 3-2. Northrup followed with a single, but Jim Price who had replaced the injured Freehan bunted poorly to force Northrup at second. After Wert lined out, the Gator hit for Lolich and tied the score with a double off the top of the wall in right to score Price from first. Hoerner replaced Briles and McAuliffe kept the inning going with an infield single. Mickey Stanley followed with a double for his 3rd straight hit to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead and put Lolich in line for the win. Cash made it 5-3 with a single to right after a walk to Kaline. Since Horton made the last out in the 8th after homering earlier in the innning, I replaced him with Ray Oyler as Stanley moved from short to center and Northrup moved to left. Don McMahon came in and threw a scoreless 8th. Things got interesting in the 9th when Wert compounded an 0-for-5 day at the plate with an error that allowed Maxvill to reach leading off. After striking out pinch-hitter Roger Maris and retiring Brock, Javier and Flood singled to make it 5-4. But McMahon struck out Cepeda for the second time to end it. Freehan will be available for Game 4.

Pitching value

Justin ranked 2nd to Greinke in WAR among ML pitchers. The combined WAR for the top two Detroit starters (JV, EJ) ranked 2nd in the AL and the combined WAR for the top three Detroit starters (JV,EJ,RP) also ranked 2nd in the AL. In both cases the Tigers trailed KC. The 4th most valuable Tiger starting pitcher was Luke French. Bobby Seay was the most valuable Tiger reliever for the 3rd straight season according to WAR.

Intimidating presence

Juan Pierre had more intentional walks than any Tiger except for 30-HR sluggers Miguel and Curtis. He also had a .414 OBP versus LHP.

LF

The Tigers have tried three different opening day left fielders over the last three years. None of the three finished the season with Detroit and they combined to hit under .220 for the Tigers during those seasons.
