Excellent post regarding Iorg and Ciriaco. What some just don't seem to get is the point that the minor leagues are for development. Certainly at some point you either get it or you wash out. At this point for people to say with absolute conviction that Iorg and Ciriaco are busts because of their current performance is ridiculous. You don't use a 40 man spot on someone, unless you belive they are either A) ready for your team, or B) you are concerned that someone else thinks enough of them to put them on their big league team. Clearly, DD thought there was a chance that a bottom dweller would take a chance on the superior toolsy Ciriaco. Will either make it? Who knows? But, there is no question in my mind that both are seen as our top SS prospect prospects.

Audy Ciriaco

Classic case that there are tools.....and there TOOLS. Ciriaco not only has "tools" he has awesome tools, big in size, hits HR's that make you shake your head, runs very fast, has good instincts, very coachable. His numbers don't reflect his potential. He showed significant improvement as last season progressed. Scouts are quoted as saying they believe this could be his break out year. Obviously, the organization felt there was a chance that his athleticism and overall make-up made him a risk to be picked up. So, we protected him. He may bomb out, or he may be our starting SS within the next couple years. There is also a chance he could convert to 3B. The latest projections have him at least one and a half seasons away from Detroit. Pencil him as the starting SS for Erie in 2010. Tigstown rates him behind Iorg, and Fields, as the 3rd. best SS prospect in the system. Obviously, the organization agreees.

Ooops, my cut and paste butchered that last paragraph. Try this:

I also don't really agree that the Tigers are likely to remain in the upper tier payroll wise. They may attempt to keep spending if certain scenerios play out - but a tear down and start over could well be in the near future - based on what happens with Verlander. They could easily have a 70-80mm payroll going into 2011 - and if Verlander forces their hand in a trade - they might well strip the whole thing down again and start over. I don't think DD left him self much wiggle room payroll wise in each of the last two off-seasons - and if things go really south this yr - Verlander's going to want out of here - and it's blow it up time.

.I believe we will stay among the top 10 in payroll. That's Ilitch's competitive nature. I've maintained all along that Ilitch is heavily invested in the City of Detroit, and the success of the Tigers and Wings are both personally satisfying, and a big piece of the Ilitch empire. Now, that can change. The economy can continue a downward spiral, the casino can go broke, the team can fall apart, or Ilitch could decide at his age it's time to sell. Absent any of that type of stuff I expect the spending to continue.

In the case of Verlander I expect we will make an attempt to extend him this year. If he says he is committed to testing the market, he'll be traded. We've discussed this before. If he should decide to do that, we still won't blow it all up. We can spend Verlander money elsewhere, and add the pieces he brings in trade. We'll either keep the core in tact or change the names, for different talent.

I"m not suggesting that my thoughts are right on target, but please accept the possibility that yours aren't either. It's a fluid game, plans are made........plans change. At this point, I think DD is still working within the scheme that some of the vets will come back, health will be better, the core is in tact, and if a trade comes along that makes us better he'll make it.........even if it means we spend less./p p>

"Where I disagree with you is - I think DD is paying for some things that have blown up on him right now - and I don't think things are going "to plan" for him"

I don't recall implying that things are going to plan for him. Injuries happened, age regression occured, devlopment for some hasn't come as quickly as expected. These things happen. Dombrowski built a team that could have been reasonably expected to contend for a 3 year cycle. He also invested heavily in the draft, bolstered other scouting avenues, and kicked up our development team. All part of an on-going strategy to contend. And, other than the horrible 08 team, we've fielded a good product. He'll stick to the plan, adjust finances as needed, and field a contender again in 2010

"You say DDs big thing is "big hard throwing" pitchers - but give me one GM that doesn't value big hard throwing pitchers - that's not a style of play - or any type of unique way to build a team."

Again, did I say DD had a "unique way"? Just the opposite, I think he is the sterotypical traditionalyst. Given the ability to construct a "perfect" team, I suspect he would look for power on the corners, speed/OBP/defense up the middle, and a staff of power arms. Who doesn't?

I don't know if you followed it, but Wilkin had a nice winter league. He started out white hot. Cooled off and finished strong. The bigger surprise was that he played CF, and reports are that he played it well. With the Granderson rumor, I'm wondering if Wilkin playing CF wasn't by design. I think the assumption is that if we deal Granderson, Clete and Casper are the internal options. I wouldn't rule our looking at Wilkin in a platoon. He crushes LH pitching. I think his D is still a ? mark though, although he has definitely improved significantly. Of course the other possibility if we should trade Granderson is a FA sign. Coco or Byrd may be cheap alternatives.

I think Turner and Crosby are real close. Crosby might get a slight edge because he's a lefty, throws just as hard as Crosby, and has had pro success at a decent level. I wonder if Turner will put up Crosby numbers in WM this year? We'll see. I think the national rankings will have them close. Turner has the hype of being a #1 so he'll get the edge. I know Tigstown will rank Crosby #1 and Turner #2.As for my rankings; flip a coin

I saw him pitch an inning against Detroit early in the season. Threw hard and threw strkes. The word this way at this time of year (other than this forum) is all Red-Wings, Pistons, College Football, and moans on the Lions. Not much BB talk. Those that I know that are die-hard fans are buying into the slashing payroll thing, and are flipping out that we're trading Granderson. Jackson doesn't get a whole lot of play, but I'm sure if a deal goes down for someone other than a "name" player, it will be criticized.

I said; it really doesn't matter to me keep him or trade him. Having trouble with your specs today? I think Jackson is a legitimate ML starter. Capable of double digit wins on almost any club. Just the kind of guy I like, big, strong, hard thrower.......a horse. I come from Bunning, McLain, Lolich, Morris; when it comes to pitching, power pitching is the ticket for me. Jackson fits that. However, so does others. When we traded for Jackson, the rumor had been we were looking at Putz. I liked Putz, but said at the time that I wish we would go for Morrow. Ended up we got Jackson. Good deal. Now, a Jackson for Morrow deal is ok with me too. Same type of pitcher. You dig?

I haven't got him movin' anywhere. Trade him......keep him, really doesn't matter to me. I think he's a solid pitcher, but not the guy we saw in the first half. Brandon Morrow would be a fair return.

Huh?

Have you changed nicknames for Jackson? I said if Verlander or JACKSON had Sabathia's run support they would have won 25 games.

If Verlander or Jackson had Sabathia's run support they would've won 25 games. Grienke may have won 30

Tigstown thinks a lot of him. But, more importantly so does the organization, and his numbers are good. He reportedly is throwing very well in winter ball. I had him on my list of those to protect before Audy. The other young guy who I think we will be talking about before 2010 is over is Ramon Lebron. He's been lights out in winter ball. On my list he lines up right behind Crosby, Turner, and Oliver.

Roster adds

I'm a little surprised that we protected Ciriaco. However, young, big, strong, fast, and powerful he might have attracted some attention from a bottom dweller. At best guess he's a year and a half away from the bigs, and that's if he shows the same improvement he did in the second half of last season. Some reports have us considering moving him to 3B, but he will most likely be the starter at SS for Erie.

It's probably that we will lose some pitching. Duane Below, Scott Drucker, Luis Marte, and Brett Jensen are possibles, but I think the best pitcher we left unprotected is Lester Oliveros. Right handed reliever, throws very hard, is scheduled for Erie, and is probably a 50-50 bet to make the big league team at some point in 2010..... if we keep him.

Strasburg injury

Stephen Strasburg "twisted" his knee prior to yesterday's game. The Nat's are sending him for an MRI and are saying it's not serious. Baseball America is saying they are hearing conflicting reports about the severity.

You can bet the National's will be very careful with how they proceed.

Ok, you're not in agreement with Cabrera's contract. Were you in favor of the trade? I thought it was a great deal with the stipulation that we sign Cabrera long term. Trading 2 stud prospects (top 10 at the time) for a rental of Cabrera would have sent me ballistic. So, for the deal to make sense, Miggy had to be signed long term. And, there is only 2 ways you sign the Miguel Cabrera's of the world; 1) pay lots of money, and 2) pay it for a long time.
