The good thing, if Marcus never plays another day in the majors, he's picked up his big league pension. He's put in 4 years, 108 days, so a little over 4 1/2 seasons. All he needed for the pension was 4 years on an MLB roster. Way to go Marcus! Enjoy the money.

Well, Rod Allen was right....he is country strong....and seems like a nice guy.

However, I don't see him ever hitting 50 home runs in the big leagues. He is fooled much too often on major league curve balls.

a strikeout waiting to happen. No more Rod Allen describing him as "country strong." I can live with that

His act grew tiresome.

Another one of my favorite Tigers leaves the team. But it was time and I wish him good fortune down the road. Prediction: If he catches on as a starter on another team, he'll bat .260 or better, hit 40 to 50 home runs and drive in over 100 next year. Line SDWingnut, I don't think he ever got the break he needed in Detroit to succeed. But that's baseball; we were never in a position to give him that break. We needed to find speed, defense and contact and he was none of those.

He was injured during this season. Someone who can get hot and carry a team by his lonesome is valuable. He will sign elsewhere you can take it to the bank.

Thanks for the memories you got caught up in a numbers game.

One dimensional home run hitters are highly over-rated.

Can't even compare Thames to Carlos Pena. Pena has a lot more to offer than just hitting home runs. Pena is one heck of a first baseman. Thames is a liability in the field.

Pitching and defense win championships. If a player is useless on defense his value plummets as far as I am concerned especially if he is not a switch hitter or at least hits both right-handers and left-handers well to be a decent DH.

I just don't understand why people focus so much on the homers.... for example... a lot of good that did Granderson this last year. I would trade Granderson for a decent lead-off hitter in a heartbeat.

Twins will be very smart to sign Polanco.... he is exactly their type of player.... very good on defense and puts the ball in play.... and that's one of the reasons why they always win. I guarantee you that Twins wouldn't sign a guy like Thames.

Hey Skip, I will be one of the rare posters who claims that Thames never got his chance in Detroit. Thames is going to turn out just like Carlos Pena. When it was announced that Thames [a 3 run hr waiting to happen] would be the full time DH, I was excited that he finally got his chance. But alas, ole smokey was just kidding because he rode the rookies all the way to the Brian Giles [Mendoza is now retired] line before letting Marcus have his chance. Thames then got hurt and the rest is history. I will be proven right in 2010 when Thames busts out to career highs in Hr's and RBI.

No doubt, he can still hit 15 - 20 homers per year... but I thought I saw less effort from Marcus this year. Several missed catches in LF. Sloppy baserunning.

Thames finally got his full-time, hit clean up chance this year.........and to tell the truth he was not up to the task.

He lost any aggressiveness, and every at-bat seemed to be behind 0-2.

It was a shame. After many had viewed him as having 40 homer potential, it turned out Leyland had gotten the most out of him in previous seasons playing him when he did. There really wasn't anything "more" coming, despite some extrapalating out his numbers to full season totals.

Marcus was an easy guy to like, and I wish it would have turned out better.

Thames

Marcus had his chance. Leyland batted him fourth for about six weeks this summer, and Marcus did not do well in that role.

Nobody ruined Thames. He has always been a poor average hitter.

Should quit staring out at the mound and go kick some @$$. Only way he's gonna get a hit against Baker.

Thu. 10/01/09 01:36 PM

Thames

Nice. ...I'd like to see him tag up to 3rd, if the situation presents itself - like on ANY flyball to RF. The Tigers RARELY to that.

Thu. 10/01/09 02:14 AM

Thames

Has NOT homered since August 12th. Has only 4 home runs the second half of the season.

Does anyone know why Thames is on the team??

If Thames bats behind Cabrera in the playoffs I will puke.

And the Huff aquisition was another wash-burn-bill-of-goods. Huff will be totally useless in the NY series in 4 games against left-handers, who can go 8 innings.

Well at least we won't have to watch Cletus strike out.

The Tigers better hope that Guillen continues hitting the ball well batting right-handed.

Get use to the right-handed lineup because we will see it in four of the games.
