Polanco

Not only won the gold glove at 2B- again- but was also # 1 in the Ultimate Zone Ratings used by Dewanites. By either measure, he's the best in the league with the glove at 2B.

You can't tell me that replacing Polanco is intended to improve the team. It's not. It's about not wanting to pay him, even for one season. If DD does not offer arbitration to Polanco, he needs to be fired. In fact, he needs to be canned anyway. $ 72 million in BAD, immovable contracts, preventing him from keeping a reasonably priced gold glove No. 2 hitter, is inexcusable.

I don't see any arbitration offer to Polly coming. The Tigers want a $400,000 2B.

I'm with you on this one, Skipper. If the Tigers offer arbitration to Polanco, and some other club is willing to give us their first round pick AND give him a multi year deal, and we get two top 50 picks for him, then I'm okay with letting him go. In that case, we need to replace him in the lineup in the field and at the plate, which Sizemore can't possibly do. But if DD doesn't even offer arbitration and let's Polly walk for absolutely nothing, then I want his head in a galvanized pail!

Sounding more like the team is not going to attempt to sign Polanco.

Another pinhead DD move. The straw that broke the camel's back. Terrible personel and financial management....the worst.

If this man is not brought back I will not follow this club,if these idiots can pursue Everett then they better bring Polanco back. This is the only complete ball player on the Tigers, the rest are clowns and JL is a fool.

As long as Arnold Ziffle is there...

Resigning Polly for the 2010 is a sign to me that the Detroit Tigers would not be raising the white flag of surrender on the season. If DD lets him walk, my membership on the bash DD bandwagon would be complete.

Resign Polanco today. Pull the trigger.

Drucker, huh? I'd miss Sam. BTW, heard that in Brazil, Green Acres is a major rerun hit in Portugese.

Lose Drucker? Gee, how will we ever recover from that?

What some are forgetting is not the money but the years.

Tigers want one year and Polly wants a multiyear deal.

Give Bondo and Nate a break injuries have a lot to do with the last few years if they both come back this year healthy we will have a great staff.

Noticed the Tigers put positional players on the 40 man roster? pitchers are usually taken because Positional players are harder to keep on the team for the required year.

I guess they expect to lose Drucker

I think you are right. I posted in favor of keeping Polanco, back in August, but I think the decision has been made not to resign him. I do think it a wise choice to offer arbitration. If he accepts or signs elsewhere, either outcome will be a positive, IMO.

I hestitate to post anything else about him - but isn't it clear that his days as a Tigers are over? They've Granderson's 5mm on the trading block guys - there's not a chance in heck that Polanco is a Tiger next yr.

BP- I agree with your conclusion, but not how you get there. Polanco is a different player than Sizemore. If SS can translate about 80% of his numbers to the major league level, he will show a modest increase in power over Polanco, a decent batting average, a bit lower OBP as he adjusts, doesn't hit as well with runners on base (not RISP- very few hit as well as Polly with runners on).

But SS made 21 errors in 30 fewer games, and does not have Polanco's range defensively. He is projected to be adequate, but he's still a work in progress. He needs to work on turning the DP, and turning on balls hit to his right side. "Range" is more than just the ability to move laterally. It's the ability to make a play. Polanco had the highest Ultimate Zone Rating (UZR) in the majors at 2B last year.

But you have to look at the lineup as a whole. In the lineup, PP is a No. 2 hitter. It doesn't matter if they get a No. 2 hitter at SS, at 2B, or in CF. If the Tigers could get Marco Scutaro, the ONLY hitter in the game to have a higher contact pct than Polanco, they could play him at SS, take PP's slot in the lineup, add a little speed, and plug Sizemore in at 2B. Then, at least we'd have something to offset what we lose with Polanco defensively, and have Pacman for the late innings to help ease SS into the role. That's just one example.

We have no idea where SS could fit in the lineup. If he can lead off, or bat second, that would be a huge plus. He won't move runners as well as Polly. Almost nobody does. But he should hit many more gappers, a few more dingers, and run much better when he gets on. Replace Polanco in the lineup with a shortstop, and SS is a clear upgrade over TGAE.

Actually, Sizemore can do all those things, and more. What's more, you don't know he'll be a liability in the field. Will he be as reliable as Polanco? I'm guessing no, but then, very few are. A half step down from gold glove does not necessarily qualify as liability.

I'm not anti-Polanco, not at all; I'd rather have him hitting than Everett, or Santiago, or Inge (unless I need a homerun from Inge). If a taker can be found for Ordonez or Guillen, I'd keep Polanco. Basically, I go along with 53 - offer Polanco arbitration; if he takes it, fine, start him occasionally everywhere in the infield. If not, then best wishes to him, and Detroit gets to draft another infielder.
