Magglio

Take away Pudge, Magglio, and Polanco and the Tigers would have never been in the 2006 World Series. You just can't continually harp on the ballclub for paying big salaries to stars simply because they have a bad year or their abilities begin to decline as they age. The Tigers took a gamble on Pudge and Ordonez at a time in which Detroit was a no-no for the big time free agents. The fact was both Pudge and Ordonez were injury risks. Despite all the bellyaching about the Tigers "vesting" Ordonez the Tigers have been in serious pennant contention the last 3 of 4 years despite the year-ending collapses because they took chances on these players. Magglio Ordonez made the Tigers plenty of money in the 5 years that he has been here. He has won a batting championship, hit what may have been the most momentous homerun in Tiger baseball history, and finished runner-up for the MVP in 2007. All this whining about having to pay him betrays an ignorance that is not worth commenting on. Yes, they have to pay him the big bucks next year. Now get over it!

No way was he going to risk that money. Not a chance. He was going to get those at-bats if it was at all possible.

Magglio

Of course I think he did PHDs.

Don't they have leave for situations like that.Or was he concerned about his ABs??

If he couldn't handle his wife's illness, it doesn't explain why I had to watch him flail for months. Personally, I don't know him or his wife and I couldn't possibly speculate the reasons for his sub-par performance.

[sob]give the man his money.Unreal stuff,but not unusual,coming from Troy this A.M.

His wife, his off-year...neither have to do with the fact that he is not worth $18 million at the age of 36. He's a DH. Thanks for the memories.

We all work through illnesses, deaths, tragedies and many other things. It's life. I blame DD, not Magglio.

Sorry,Pierre was .308 this year.

And you don't think that his wife's battle with cancer last winter and spring had any affect on Magglio? You don't think that, because of his wife's illness, he had to drop his usual off season heavy workout regimin down in Miami? And you don't think that the Tiger brass realized this?

He's never been a great player, except for one year. He's a stat compiler. Bat enough times and you accumulate numbers. A better than average hitter, but certainly not $18 million worth. Doesn't get on base enough, not a good fielder, never a superstar in any way. One roided up statistical season, the rest are filled with tons of plate appearances and decent final numbers. Steve Garvey used to do the same thing.

put up middle infielder numbers for 18 mil. Its a beautiful world

Sat. 11/07/09 09:40 AM

Magglio

"You wanted him to hit 312?"-Sure,but not a Juan Pierre .312 @ $18.5 million.

He was a joke for months. I will never forgive DD for his stupidity. Why he is still employed is a mystery to anyone with a brain. If it were just this move, it would be enough to be dismissed. Because of the many others, they should be finding him a condo to share with Matt Millen.

We wanted him to drive in more than 50 runs, hitting in the middle of the order. We wanted him to hit more doubles and homers than Adam Everett.

If he would have had 35 doubles, 25 homers, and 110 rbi's..he coulda hit .250 and I doubt there would have been nearly as much complaining.

His season was awful. I don't care what he ended up hitting, average-wise.

Sat. 11/07/09 09:28 AM

Magglio

I love it. The guy enters the 2009 season, with a lifetime batting average of 312 and what does he hit in 2009....310. So what's the complaint about? You wanted him to hit 312?
