SOS, and SORR
Michigan has stunk for two straight seasons, but I dont think that quite yet justifies an SOS-like moniker. The Spartans have been the Same Ol Spartans for years. I didnt make it up. I heard it many time from different sportscasters on ESPN. I will concede SORR, Same Ol Rich Rod!
But what happened yesterday anyway? I was only able to watch the first half, and PSU's D was good, but their O was horrible. 7-7 tie, then I had to go for a social outing in St Louis. I come home at 11pm, turn on Sports Center, watched till about midnight. In that entire time, not ONE mention of the MSU-PSU game. Meanwhile, in that same timeframe, they covered the UM-OSU game three times. IN addition, they had a courtroom skit debating whether Michigan or Notre Dame were heading in the right direction.
I didnt find out the MSU score until this morning! what the heck happened? 7-7 Halftime, to losing the game by 30! But this raises two questions that should concern Sparty fans. 1) PSU is not that good. How did Sparty fall apart so badly in the game? And 2) Why would Sports Center ignore such a big game for MSU, while covering a bad UM-OSU game 3 times? Sports Center did a clip on the Harvard-Yale game for Petes sake! An Ivy League game trumps MSU-JoPa??
The GREAT Les Miles
Totally blew it for LSU yesterday. What was he thinking? LSU had the ball, but it was 4th and VERY long. There was like 25 seconds left, and they needed a field goal to win. Does he call time out? No. Does he have his field goal team ready? No. He let the clock run down to almost nothing, then finally they made a first down with only ONE second left. Had he called time, they could have easily kicked the FG for a win. Smart time management Les.
The State of Michigan Football
Rather like the state of Michigan economy. In the dumps. At the bottom of the nation. While we are accustomed to the Lions stinking on an annual basis, we usually could defer to at least ONE Big Ten Michigan team giving us something to cheer for. Alas, how times have changed.
UM is contending with the Lions for the most futile football in the state. And MSU, after one fluke 9-win season is once again back to familiar territory at 6-6. Can we say "same ol Spartans" now? If not, explain how 6-6 is NOT the same ol Spartans. JL Smith, we hear you calling.
Interestingly, I recall saying 6 weeks ago, when the Spartys were hyped up about reaching 3-3, and predicting winning out...I merely said that 3-3 is just half way to 6-6.
For you Spartys that keep saying "they could easily be 9-3 if..." By that reasoning, they could also easily be 4-8. Tate doesnt throw that OT pick, UM wins. Purdue doesnt blow the game, Purdue wins. MSU 4-8. Ifs and buts can go both ways. What matters is the actual record. 6-6. Pizza Bowl time.
Truly the Harvard of the Midwest
Few would argue about Michigan's academic status and world renown reputation as an Ivy League level institution. However, now their football team performs at an Ivy Leauge level too, so perhaps they should just make it official. Let Michigan join the Ivy League, which solves two problems. 1) It restores the Big Ten to 10 teams. 2) It places Michigan in a conference in which it can compeat.
I Waited all Summer for This??
Sheesh. For months I anticipated this college football season, and this is what I got. Seeing Michigan fumble and stumble to a 5-7 record, and seeing little improvement at all. Look beneath the win-loss record, and Michigan regressed from last year. Last year's 3-9 team had two wins against bowl teams. This year, out of 5 wins, only one was against a non-cupcake. And that being overrated Notre Dame.
Not that I think RR is a bad coach. I dont. But there is just too much political Michigan Man crap preventing him from working freely here. Let the guy go coach where he will be free from the behind the scenes witch hunt campaigns. RR will win at his next coaching gig. But he wont win at Michigan. Its just a bad fit. Too many people behind the scenes pulling the strings against him. No one could win with constant distractions like RR has had to deal with at Michigan.
The Times, they are a Changin in College Football.
MIchigan isnt the only state where football has entered uncharted territory. Ohio is in the same unfamiliar territory. Can anyone name the last time when the best football teams in the states of Ohio and MIchigan were NOT Big Ten teams?
In Michigan, Central Michigan has shown themselves the head of the class over UM and MSU.
And in Ohio, I think the doubters have to admit that OSU is not even close to the best of that state this year. Cincy would kick OSU's butt today.
Most of us are aware that OSU is not that good.
On the national level, this is obvious. And it will be painfully obvious in the Rose Bowl. It wont matter if its USC, Stanford, Oregon, or whoever. OSU wont have a chance. They are only good on the Big Ten level. Best in the Big Ten, the weakest of the major conferences.
Is this a Soccer Game?
The way Michigan keeps moving the ball down field, then coming up empty with no score, it reminds me of soccer. Constant ball movement, without the reward of a score. Yawn. Which is why soccer is so bloody boring and will never attain mainstream popularity at the pro level.
Hey...a MIchigan score...by field goal kick. See? The only score by a kick. This IS soccer!
Whats REALLY Scary...
..is that so far, Michigan's DEFENSE is playing better than the offense. Just wait until their D remembers how bad they really are! THEN the route begins.
NC Implications
HAHA Just kidding. Turned game on in tme to see Michigan move the ball down to the red zone, then proceed to miss a chip shot field goal. HAIL! Hail to the victors!
beating a dead wolverine
Gaylan, you said that Michigan doesnt duck playing the best. (in OSU). Yes, MSU got out of another sure loss by avoiding OSU this year. However, speaking of 'playing the best', could you explain Michigan's oh-so-tough non-conference schedule this year? I'm surprised any UM players have any teeth left after eating so many sweet, soft, fluffy cupcakes!
UM vs Delaware, and SOS
I have been a Michigan fan as long as I can remember. But their running up the score on some poor little secretarial school just plain discusted me. There is no pride in giving a merciless beating to the class weakling. Pick on someone your own size. So yes, I say if OSU runs up the score, its just giving Michigan a taste of their own medicine. After all, their season turned disastrous following the unnecessary Delaware debacle. Even Illinois took it to them!
Concerning Sparty, and SOS. Well, correct me if Im wrong, but going from a 9-win season to a 6-win season seems to be the wrong direction, and a return to the good ol' SOS/JL Smith days. Sparty fans should hope for a PSU win, which will send MSU to a bowl they might be able to win. 7-5 sends them to a bowl they can't win.
A Reasonable New Puppet!
Heyyy! Welcome the latest B10 Forum cyber puppet, REASONABLE MAN from his make believe home of Houston, TX. (At least this puppet doesnt live in place with a made-up name) WHY do i say hes a puppet? A. Because its a brand new name. B. because he starts right in on me with the same type of venom as a not-so-smart guy would do.
For one thing, calling me 'KKK' is typical DUMB GUY style. Ironically, Im about as far from the narrow-minded aryan racial paranoia Michigan militia mindset as you can get! After all, I CHOOSE to live in central city areas like Chicago. NOT the sterile suburbs, but IN the city. I take the bus and everything. I defended Kwame from hateful suburbanites. My initials happen to be KK. Nothing I can do about that. Although I sure am glad I did not get Kevin as a middle name!
say again?
Oldgoat, I call MSU cocky, because of the way they acted after beating wretched 3-9 UM last year, and they way they were going on and on about expecting a BCS bowl this year, based on beating weak B10 opponents.
But I digress. Insteresting stat on UM this year. Take away the weakest cupcake games (EMU, WMU, Del)in which UM outscored them 139 - 30. The remainder of games against teams with a pulse, UM was outscored 279 - 205. After the OSU game, it should be around 320 - 212.
The Slaughter Begins Tomorrow at Noon
This year's game may be even worse than last years. And UM deserves whatever OSU gives it for what they did to Delaware. If OSU is feeling charitable, they may keep the difference to less than 30 pts. No matter the score, it will be as one-sided as a boxing match between Mike Tyson and Woody Allen.
PSU vs MSU...I had picked PSU to win 31-17, but it could be alot closer. I still think PSU wins, and MSU never leaves the state for its bowl game.
