Urbanity...

Ya gotta decide...is my life worth $30,000? Is it worth the risk? NO.

Chef's Schools Packed...

During the early 1970's I was fresh out of the military, had a couple years of college under my belt, but couldn't find a profession that interested me.

Sure, jobs were plentiful and I had worked in factories, offices, breweries, chain restaurants, etc. but just couldn't find one that I could sink my teeth into.

At the time I read an advertisement in the Detroit News about a culinary school located Downtown that was reasonably priced, instruction only lasted one year, and graduates were typically placed in high-end restaurants located all over the country.

Cooking interested me and I had fun preparing meals following recipes and experimenting a little bit on my own.

This chef school sounded like just the ticket for me. That is until I inquired further only to find out that even in the fanciest of restaurants chef's were paid peanuts...I mean not much more than minimum wage even after years of experience.

Seems the only way for Chef's to earn a decent living is to open their own restaurants and that takes experience, capital, working 14-18 hours per day, management skills, and a lot of luck to succeed.

Working at an interesting job intrigued me, but money and spare-time to hunt & party was important too so I took a job at Dodge Truck in Warren instead.

Bon Appetit!

Michigan Lottery

A 2.3% cut in school aid is not exactly the end of the world...yet school administrators are crying like it is.

Salaries make up approximately 85% of school budgets.

I'll bet virtually every Michigan worker could survive a 2.3% cut in wages, and many have already had their salaries cut by far more than that.

Most private school elementary & H.S. teachers earn 60% or less of the salaries of Public school teachers yet many would agree a parochial school education is superior to a public school education.

Note to schools: quit belly-aching & teach the kids...do your jobs.

MSU cracks down on Frosh Booze

At least one Fraternity house has closed their MSU location due to a variety of reasons, but most of which was lack of interest by undergrads because they can't sip a beer & watch a football game on TV or have a cold one while schmoozing at Fraternity/Sorority mixers.

Many more Fraternities are on the skids and will probably discontinue within the next couple years.

Students are discovering it's safer to sneak a beer into the dorm & consume it behind a locked door than walk the campus where Cops randomly force students to take the breathylzer.

College, it's not what it used to be.

state tuition aid

No. You don't understand our government correctly.

Unless one party controls all three: House, Senate, Governorship/Presidency they can't pass 'THEIR' legislation nor be blamed for NOT passing 'THEIR' legislation. The other political party has the ability to block any attempts to pass laws. Nice try at 'spin' though rwynkle.

Robert Bobb

Back when Bob-Bob was city manager of Kalamazoo (1980's), there was some question about his obtaining a CCW permit from local law enforcement as a reward for favorable budget treatment of police. I'm not sure how 'honest' that was.

But he moved to San Jose and came back a 'new' man...so GO BOB!

Go Green, up up up.

Academia's feet are never held to the fire. They live in an artificial world that screams to the peasants, 'we are smarter than you so you can't touch us'!

I'd love to see some pay & benefit cuts for those underworked, overpaid, spoiled brainiacs...but they don't need to cut spending. The answer is always simple...raise tuition.

No, I'm not jealous...everybody in my immediate family possesses a Bachelor's, Masters, or Doctorate degree...no I don't think any of us are smarter or better or untouchable like those University Acamaniacs. They make me want to puke.

Cutting Michigan Merit Scholarships

I too applaud these Senate budget cuts.

Especially the 12% reduction in Revenue Sharing.

Revenue is shrinking...our State government needs to shrink right along with it.

It's time to 'rightsize' the ship...before it sinks.

Embattled priest

So, in a nutshell the only 'hookup' the Catholic Church will tolerate is one with an altar boy. Those relationships are 'dont ask - don't tell' until the abuse victim sues...then it's 'give him some money to shut him up' and the priest walks.

Religion...It's a direct link to many of the world's current problems.
