Unions Are Not To Blame

There is no excuse for stealing money from our students but the unions are not to blame.

Unions are needed in most organizations including DPS. People who don't support unions never had to endure the struggle or racism that many minorities have had to face when it comes to being treated fairly on a job. If we could trust government and management to be fair I would say unions are not needed and employees could keep their unions dues. I must say that over the last few years unions have lost their power and it makes you wonder if it is worth having one. But you can’t trust management because the bottom line is dollars and cents. Parents you better pay attention to what your children are learning on the streets and through the media and answer their questions when they ask. People are quick to blame teachers when children under achieve. Any fool knows that the parents are the child’s first teacher. Take a look at the neighborhoods and the unemployment rate in Detroit. The children in DPS come from very challenging situations and they bring these problems to school. Some of them can’t see how reading literature is going to put food on the table or money in their pockets. All they see is surviving another day. So before you talk about getting rid of unions " check yourself because you probably had a silver spoon in your mouth.

Laid Off Special Education Teachers

The Human Resources Department and Robert Bob made a mistake during the cuts and mistakenly laid off 97 Special Ed. Teachers.

* Note: Letters from the district indicate that Special Ed layoffs were due to teachers not completing required coursework.

Many of the teachers completed their coursework but were laid off due to a filing error by overworked employees.

Special needs children cannot afford to go without teachers and services.

DPS should correct this mistake ASAP. Special Ed teachers who received layoff notices should refer to the DFT website today.
