Compromise on Reforms....
formermi...and opine4u...
Spoken like those who have never stepped in an urban high school, let alone worked in one. Please comment on what you know and understand!
school board to seek tax probe
Once again, money taken by non DPS staff.
Does everyone see the pattern?? DPS staff are being layed off because others are not paying their bills.
Yes there were some non classroom staff taking money, which was wrong, but this does not come anywhere near the millions big business (BCBS, Detroit, etc...) have taken from DPS...but who gets blamed...teachers and support staff.
dps textbooks
This has been a historical challenge for Dps and one that R. Bobb was told about by teachers from the very beginning. However, this was not press worthy until a student was interviewed by the media so it had not been a priority. the community must realize that Mr. Bobb has done some good, but he has not focused on the classroom nor has he listened to the teachers or support staff so the children are not getting assistance.
I get it now, bring more kids to the media, then things will happen in the classroom....whatever it takes.
free Masters degrees
Donquixotee....I agree with you 100%
o7cvohog....A job and salary could be enough but teachers and support staff are loosing those everyday.
Master's degrees to teach in urban cities
Once again, ON PAPER, the idea is great!!! However where will they teach????? Certainly not in DPS as they are constantly laying off teachers and support staff.
Maybe they can teach in Pontiac, Saginaw, etc.... Oh, yeah, they are laying off teachers in all the urban areas....hmmm.
DPS $40M digital product contract
Most DPS parents in neighborhood schools do not have home computers. Once again, good idea on paper, however, no one outside of school staff understand the dynamics of inner city school children. $40 Million wasted....AGAIN.
DPS and Mr. Bobb
Wow, $260,000 contract. who is paying Bobb's salary? DPS has no money and the state of Michigan has no money.
Of course he would stay, no where else is he going to make that kind of money.....
DPS count
I am please DPS exceeded their predictions, however, I am a little confused. The article states that the totals were 85,581, but only 83,812 are reported as full time students? What does that mean? I thought all students were considered full time.
Dump on teachers continued
UMfirecarr: I totally agree with you!
DPS
First of all.....The Custodian and Deaconblue1969...you both are absolutely correct. Mumford had been one of the better schools under the direction of the past principal and for those who do not know....there was never a reason given for her termination.
Also, please don't think Mumford is the only high school where the Mace happens. It happens where I work, I will not name, but it is a DPS high school with high gang activity. Officers only use mace when the out of control, violent, masses do not respond to verbal direction. But most importantly, If your child is in class, they usually do not get hurt in the cross fire. Please lay blame where it belongs....at home. There is more of a safety issue in schools now as there are less staff to intervene. I like most of Mr. Bobb's actions, getting rid of waste and corruption...absolutely... but he and the community must realize inner city high schools have different issues than suburban schools so social workers and teachers are needed. For the safety of all, the budget must be reviewed and decreased in another line item. Let's start with getting rid of personal drivers and the still top heavy administration....
DPS
Interesting. Please read........ the Oct 10 article on freep.com
'Bobb set to spend $40 million.........'
good bye to Mr. Z
I personally have worked with Mr. Z. He is a wonderful person, as are most of the school social workers. I applaud much of what Mr. Bobb has done, but I think in this area, he did not think of the powerful need of school social workers to the school district of Detroit. Detroit schools have MANY behavior issues and getting rid of the professionals that work most closely with behavior will be devastating to the district.
school violence
This is just a glimpse of what school teachers and support staff deal with everyday. Due to the many rival gangs in high schools, staff are needed to protect students and themselves while trying to teach. Not an easy task, especially when the community continues to critcize and blame the staff for everything the children are doing. Robert Bobb, although I agree with most of what he has done, has layed off over 50 school social workers this school year....these are the mental health professionals that are needed to work with these angry students...now there are even fewer in the schools.
Pastor Vann, and other churches, I applaud your RECENT involvement, but I don't understand why it took you this long to get involved. The more volunteers we can get to patrol in and around of the schools, the more teachers and support staff will be able to work directly with the students that want to learn.
p.s. The statement in the article that most crimes are not even reported....BELIEVE IT!
extended school year
The United States is the only country with a short public school year and by the way, our children trail other countries educationally....hmmm.
Are you interested in having children in the United States globally competitive or are you more interested in disagreeing with anything President Obama suggests???
Detroiters wanting money????
Bad Bob
