Fireworks
Yes, those mortars are dangerous. But the reporting in the piece was even MORE dangerous. It's one thing to report the truth, it's quite another to twist the truth to make something seem even more dangerous/ominous than it is.
These are fireworks. And while they need a license to use or posses, the size in the picture is basically the first size over "civilian" class mortars. And while they can kill/injure people, so can the "civilian" class ones that people can buy in stores. To constantly call them "bombs" is inflammatory. Your job is not to try this for the prosecution, your job is to report fact.
And instead of "modified to go off faster", why not just say, "they trimmed the fuse shorter". Of course, just as calling them "bombs", saying the first phrase makes it sound more ominous. Which again, isn't NEEDED. Report the facts, don't embellish.
These kids were idiots. I'm more concerned about why they threw one at a house, then calling them bombs. I would imagine they had NO idea how powerful these things are as those fuses aren't just short, they are suicidally short.
And to the person that brought up CCW's on campus, first off, all these idiots where 18, and unless the law changed, they can't get them till 21. So they had three more years till they reached that "magic" age when they suddenly become aware that drinking is potentially bad, and so is shooting people with a handgun that they bought from a FFL dealer... ...since at 18 you have to buy a handgun from a family member/non-FFL dealer.
Please do not attempt to say that ALL college students are idiots just because these ones are. There are college students that can be trusted to carry firearms, just as there are some that can't be trusted to use a butter knife.
