FROM HIGH SCHOOL

The columnists used the term 'graduate high school'. Shouldn't it be 'graduate FROM high school?

Senate Republicans Vote to End Michigan Promise Scholarship

It's hard to believe that even the Senate Republicans, who primarily support the already rich, are stupid enough to pass a bill that will make higher education even more unreachable to Michigan students. If the House Democrats and Jennifer Granholm don't stop them, the Senate Republicans will be directly responsible for thousands of college students being unable to continue their education, and for thousands more to leave the state. Aren't we supposed to be encouraging the "best and brightest" to try to stay in Michigan? I would never vote for Mike Bishop anyway, but now I will actively campaign against his re-election. His leadership is destructive, not constructive, in a state that needs good leaders, not small-minded fools.

Administrator Number and Raises

I believe the #1 job growth category at WSU is “Administrator”.

Last year the administrators gave themselves 6.5% raises…..6.5%!!!!! When faculty only got 3.25%. The current new proposed contract with faculty calls for major cuts in health benefits (50% increase in co-pays) and only 2% raises….and these are capped so the most productive faculty get less.

Bankruptcy DPS

Mike...I hope your right and he comes out with programs and efforts that are just as good as Mr. Bobb's. We havent seen Bing nearly enough. He wasen't even willing to come out and say something about this whole Monica Conyers fiasco. People need to see and hear from him occasionaly to feel secure.

Unions Are Not To Blame

Unions are not solely to blame, but they are, in their current form, and current situation, a big part of the problem.

Look at the GM - huge pension and health care costs eventually sunk GM. Does anyone think that a GM with $50-75 billion in the bank would be in bankruptcy now ? Look at Toyota - they're getting some bank support from their government same as GM did last year, but no way are they likely to run out of cash....

The problem with unions is that while every business is fairly dynamic, they tend to prevent their businesses from keeping up with the competition or changing with the times.

Bankruptcy DPS

I believe that Bing is probably doing what Bobb is doing behind the scenes. Bobb spent a good month 'on the job' before he ever came to Detroit after he got the appointment in December, and he had access to the hearings etc prior to that point.

So yes, I see the same stuff coming for Detroit City.

Unions Are Not To Blame

There is no excuse for stealing money from our students but the unions are not to blame.

Unions are needed in most organizations including DPS. People who don't support unions never had to endure the struggle or racism that many minorities have had to face when it comes to being treated fairly on a job. If we could trust government and management to be fair I would say unions are not needed and employees could keep their unions dues. I must say that over the last few years unions have lost their power and it makes you wonder if it is worth having one. But you can’t trust management because the bottom line is dollars and cents. Parents you better pay attention to what your children are learning on the streets and through the media and answer their questions when they ask. People are quick to blame teachers when children under achieve. Any fool knows that the parents are the child’s first teacher. Take a look at the neighborhoods and the unemployment rate in Detroit. The children in DPS come from very challenging situations and they bring these problems to school. Some of them can’t see how reading literature is going to put food on the table or money in their pockets. All they see is surviving another day. So before you talk about getting rid of unions " check yourself because you probably had a silver spoon in your mouth.

DPS Cuts

The comment that called for ending public employee unions is right on target. Having worked in the government and having dealt with government unions, I can provide direct testimony to their obstructionist and "no changes allowed" attitude. Yeah, let's ban public employee unions!!

school board

And how much money was spent a few years ago refirbishing the school board offices, let alone the building or did they buy and then refirbush the building.

Here's another question, What happened to the lottery money that's suppose to go to the schools? I'm sorry ,it went to the general fund and gets spent as our politicians see fit. Did'nt we vote for it to go to the schools and not the general fund. LIke the voted officials don't get raises from it. How many of us working stiffs out there can say our pays have kept up with inflation let alone doubled or tripled in the last ten years. I wish mine had I'd been sitting on easy street.

Bankruptcy DPS

The city of Detroit must be close to Bankruptcy. Their funding source are primarily from the same source. Is anybody looking into the city of Detroit finances?

Bankruptcy DPS

Something wrong here, Why is the Detroit School Board have so many financial problems and not the City of Detroit. They get much of their money from the same sources. Wake up Detroit is something being covering up.

DPS cuts ...

Keith Johnson, president of the Detroit Federation of Teachers, called the cuts "unprecedented." Detroit News article, 06/30/09).

Mr. Johnson needs to be reminded that decades of fiscal mismanagement and downright LARCENY are “unprecedented”.

Mr. Robert Bobb is doing a fine job, and will be known as the man who saved our school system (much to the dismay of our useless, clueless, school board!)

His next assignment should be the 'City of Detroit'.

Yours for a better Detroit!

DPS Cuts

Mr. Bob clearly demonstrates that throwing more money at education only caused more stealing by DPS thieves. More money is not the answer and never has been.

Teachers put forth the big propangana lie that classroom size affects performance. The only performance it affects is their own in that they might actually have work when class sizes increase. If they don't want to work, they should quit or be fired---the sooner the better.

Years ago the baby boomers packed 50+ kids per classroom. All of them learned to read and write and nearly all graduated, in contrast to the post unionized teacher/greed environment.

We should all reflect on what Mr. Bob found---DPS employees stealing not only money but doing it from our children and also thereby stealing their futures. This in turn virtually condemned them to economic hell for the rest of their lives at the hands of the same thieves who caused the problem in the first place. The rest of us then have to pay---more than twice over---and indeed, for the rest of their lives in the form of welfare of numerous sorts, criminal justice system costs, and a lowered tax base from the economically unproductive. This does not even consider the human tragedy of their drastically poorer life experiences. Yet this is after we already lined the pockets of the teachers and their union so that this sort of thing would not happen.

This is particularly sad when one considers that the residents of Detroit have always voted to raise taxes upon themselves for the sake of their childrens' educations. Time and time again the teachers union trotted out the time worn big lie that more money is the answer to everything and the voters fell for it. And what did the citizens get for their time and tax dollars? More theft, more dropouts, uneducated graduates, more unqualifed job seekers, more crime, and more of their kids in jail.

Yes, we need more unionism in this State, that's the answer to everything . . . .

The real answer is to eliminate public employee unions.
