Daye has promise

Mad is right. Daye altered several shots and one of the coaches said as much at half time. His length bothered shots. He missed his shots but that should come. He is the best young big man prospect the Pistons have had recently. He is a 15 pick showing signs of a top ten pick. Let's see some more play, a lot more.

Daye has promise

Philly has a SF who takes a lot of off-balance, fade away shots. Yesterday, those shots were falling. Daye came in and was guarding him a lot while he was in. Daye altered a lot of those shots, in doing so, he was out of position to get a rebound. Off of rotations, Daye also altered shots while Ben or someone else grabbed the rebound. On the offensive end, Daye got his hand on the ball numerous times to keep the ball alive and prevented the other team from having a defensive rebound. Altered shots and getting even a finger on the ball to keep it alive aren't stats that will show up on the boxscore. I mean, the guy is 6'11, are you trying to say the ball came right at him and he ran away from it? Daye is not strong, in the Orlando game there was a time they had Redick on him and he didn't have a natural instinct to take him in the post. Daye needs to work on his strength and that is all. He has great natural abilities, and awareness on rotations. Also he is not good at boxing out, but it hasn't been taken advantage of yet because his height helps him make up for that.

Daye has promise

Come on GUM...even you have to admit that 0 rebounds in 15 minutes for a 6'11 forward is remarkable. I'd have thought Daye might get a couple of rebounds just by accident.

Hopefully, Daye will improve and get tougher.

You know who looked great yesterday?...Marreese Speights. I missed him playing for Phily last year. He looked like a beast.

I did watch the game.

Daye has promise

Murph said "Daye might be able to shoot, and he might even have "promise". But he's really going to have to do better then 7 points, 0 rebounds, 0 blocked shots, and 0 assists, in order to help this team. I remeber when Pistons fans use to call a performance like that "soft"."

No offense, but I am willing to bet that you didn't watch the game yesterday....

Sorry...that should read, "Bynum came close to a triple-double yesterday."

I see Bynum came close to a triple-triple yesterday. Bynum is certainly no softy.

Show, you said it better than I could have. Basically you saide, 'If you come in with a shot already, the hard part is over.' Yes, defense comes with experience, development and desire.

Daye has promise

"Some players come in without a shot but get one in the first two to three years. Less likely, is a guy getting a shot much later in his career like Lamar Odom."

Yo L.A. Piston, I know your intentions were not to make a comparison, but it's funny you bring up Lamar Odom. That's actually who Daye can pattern his game after. L.O. came in with the ball-handling and perimeter ability of a SF but the ability to get in the post when he had the matchup advantage. Over the years as he got bigger he grew into the PF role but still has those all-around skills that make him dangerous. The thing about Daye is he's already a better shooter than Odom, but he's probably not as quick.

But I see what you're saying and agree 100%. When you come into the league already with the ability to shoot it well, then really the hard part is out the way. As a player physically matures, their defense can improve trememndously with just will and desire. Guys like Max and Amir are good defenders because they WANT to be good defenders. But I'm sure they WANT to be good shooters but you can't just WANT that. That comes with constant work and reps. But when a good shooter wants to become a good defender, there's nothing stopping them. They can essentially become a good defender the next game they play. So with Daye being a good shooter, he's definitely ahead of the curve.

Daye has promise

Murph, Of course the jury is still out on Daye and will be for some time. A good shot does not inevitably make a good player but it is a very good start at being one. The corollary is worse. A guy without a shot better wind up near as good as Ben Wallace on defense or he will be more or less a journeyman-type. Some players come in without a shot but get one in the first two to three years. Less likely, is a guy getting a shot much later in his career like Lamar Odom.

The Pistons have brought in youth these last few years who can't shoot and who don't get better at it. I am waiting to see if Stuckey will break the pattern but so far his shot is still questionable. Can Maxiel and Amir shoot well enough to warrant defensive attention? Kwame? Wilcox? Afflalo's shot was getting better but he has far from crossed the bridge to the "good shooter" camp. Maybe he will. Ariza did in LA. The Pistons have too many guys on the team who are poor/average shooters and that can't be overcome by playing good defense in the NBA today. Look at Gordon. He is not great in any area but shooting but his impact could be multiplied by 3 if he had a more complete team around him.

Daye has promise

"Daye looks like he has range on his shot. That already vaults him ahead of Amir, Maxiel, and many Piston youth recently.

We keep getting guys that can't shoot--not a recipe for success..."

IMO, there's a lot more to being a successful NBA player than just an ability to shoot the ball from the parimeter...especially for a forward. IMO, Daye's success will not only depend on his ability to shoot with range, but also on his ability to defend in the paint and on the parimeter, rebound, block shots, score in the paint, etc. Daye may be a skilled rebounder and shot blocker, but the jury is still out.

Daye has promise

Good post LA. Daye will be a very good player. He is a very weak player right now. His arms move around like rubberbands. He does NOT need to be overly powerful, or even have to have big muscles, but he needs strength, kind of how Kevin Durant and Tay are, skinny, but not so weak their height advantage gets nullified. He gets strong, he for real could be something special.

We keep getting guys that can't shoot--not a recipe for success unless they are Ben Wallace. He used his length on a couple of blocks. He is just starting. I would take him over anything we have had recently. Will he pan out? Let's see.

Daye has promise

Murph- OK, you're forgiven. Look on the bright side; these young bench riders that we ship out after 3 years, they never amount to much of anything anyway. Either we've broken their spirit, or they were never any good to start with. Well........I guess that really couldn't be considered a "Bright side". Dambit! Now I'm bitter!

Thu. 11/05/09 10:34 AM

Daye has promise

Fly...yeah...you're probably right. Daye will probably develop into a decent pro, eventually. It's just sour grapes on my part. We've been watching years and years of these rookies getting drafted, sitting around on the bench for 3 years, and then getting shipped out of town, right when they're ready to contribute. How much more can I take? Ok...my bitter rant is over for the day...don't worry, be happy.
