What a no-talent.
Bruce is a multi millionaire still doing what he loves to do. Those criticizing him here are probably not.
And they think he's the loser???
Detroit union wants mayor jailed
Grumpyincanton,
Have you bothered to consider group home workers? They are considered state govt. employees in that they cannot walk off their jobs for any reason without notice. A group of them cannot quit all at once without going to jail - no matter how bad working conditions become. But they are not given state employee pay, benefits, insurance, or any other state employee considerations. Most of them work for less than $10/hr..
They are all forced to sign 'at will' contracts as a prerequisite for employment. Anyone who tries to organize them is summarily fired.
I've seen them beaten and hospitalized by their clients - but they have nobody to sue (remember - no affordable insurance either), no compensation, nowhere to turn. Other employees are coerced into remaining silent or lose their jobs (and get blackballed). There is no whistle blower protection for them. I know one worker who was sexually assaulted repeatedly. But since it was a client no charges were pressed and it was all covered up. The incident reports disappeared and she was punished for writing it into the log book. She finally quit, but she has no recourse to the law, no compensation for her ordeal, nowhere to turn.
This is what it's like when there's no possibility of unionization or collective bargaining. People are still treated like dirt even today; their options hogtied by rules and regulations until all they can do is stand there while getting assaulted and raped; either by their clients or by the quasi govt. institution that employs them.
CyberSurvey: Ensaring the innocent
Cassie,
The Bush Administration took away our rights and did all those terrible things by either changing the law or interpreting it to their advantage. They even argued diametrically opposite interpretations at the same time in two different courtrooms. They also claimed "legal right" to do all the things they did.
No law can be changed enough to prevent evil people from abusing it, and us.
Attn Unions!!
That is the dumbest response ever, Remington. Let's do a bit of math, shall we?
99 people making $30,000 and paying 10% tax
1 person making $30,000,000 and paying 1% tax.
99 * 30K * .1 = $297,000
1 * 30M * .01 = $300,000
WOW, the one rich guy is paying over HALF THE TAXES!!!
But wait, he's also paying ONLY ONE TENTH THE TAX RATE!!!
Would you consider that tax rate at all fair? (where the rich pay only one tenth the tax rate as the poor)
But the wealthy do not want you to look at that. They want you to fixate only on the absolute numbers. The fact is, Warren Buffet (I'm sure you heard of him - one of the richest guys in America), has challenged everyone on the Forbes 400 list (the list of 400 most wealthiest Americans) to show that they paid a higher tax rate than their lowly receptionist. It's been several years, so there's been several thousand chances.
So far, not one of them could show that they paid a higher rate than their receptionists. Not one.
There's been a lot of whining about his challenge. But nobody can call him out. This should make you wonder why.

Attn Unions!!
You're not making any sense, RoboD. If a union provides absolutely nothing in return for their dues, then from where did all those high wages and benefits come? The goodness of corporate hearts?
And if Unions are weak, then how did they manage to negotiate those high wages and benefits?
If you just want to express your anger and contempt, I can understand. But you made yourself look like an idiot with these self contradictions.
Waitaminute
Waitaminute, waitaminute, waitaminute.
Now we're hearing that these two men let out of the house, rake leaves, and even handed her money and sent her to the liqueur store?
And we're to believe fear kept bringing her back?
If the allegations are true, I would want these two men out of society forever. But something is not adding up. Being held prisoner and assaulted does not match with being handed money and sent to the store. And returning with the liqueur is not what I would expect of her if I were holding her prisoner and assaulting her.
There's a whole lot to this story that we don't know.
9/11 suspects to be tried in N.Y. court
What are the Republicans thinking? These criminals will be in isolation surrounded by armed guards regardless of where they're kept. But Republicans are talking like they will somehow escape and kill thousands with their bare hands and teeth on the way out. These people don't shoot lasers out of their eyes or have adamantium blades in their knuckles. They cannot make weapons out of three blades of grass and a loose string. The Republican rhetoric is completely absurd and the danger wildly exaggerated. They're just men, not James Bond, X-men, or terminators from the future.
Of course, these trials have nothing to do with justice. The Republicans have made sure that justice is impossible. At this point, there is nothing any of them could say that could not have been coerced. After so many years, these guys could be confessing in the hope that death will end their ordeal. After getting their head slammed into walls a few thousand times, water boarded, sleep deprived and their hearing damaged repeatedly, there's not much anyone would not do or say to make it stop. Authorities say they have "untainted" evidence. Well, everything that comes out of Gitmo is too tainted to be used as evidence. So whatever they have, must come from elsewhere. Euthanasia would be an act of compassion.
And look at the Republcian reaction here. Yeah, right - the whole world is a giant conspiracy to make you look bad. All 6 1/2 billion people on Earth have weekly meetings just to find ways to embarrass you.
Get real. They're just trying to bring one of several bad situations to a close.
Rep. Stupak pushes abortion to center of health care debate
Duane Lamers, I realize that there are a lot of churches that have fallen away from God. But I never really knew just how far until you claimed that understanding Gods law was a "waste of time".
AS LONG AS PEOPLE BLINDLY SUPPORT UNIONS...
Here's a new concept that neither labor nor management seems to understand these days. The success of a company depends upon a SYMBIOTIC relationship between labor and management. When either hurts, the whole hurts. Information and importance must be shared equally between both. When EITHER side breaks that symbiosis it becomes parasitic. And that is when a company starts to fail.
It's not all labors fault and it's not all managements fault. Hostility, apathy, or duplicity from EITHER side kills the company. The solution is not to eliminate the union any more than it is to eliminate the management. The solution is for both sides to sit down with the exact same information and work out a symbiosis.
Re: Learn jobs lessons in Mich., Mr. President
Interesting Mr. Howes. Considering the fact that nobody was legislating health care reform or cap and trade energy until AFTER the economy tanked nationally. Considering the fact that massive govt. debts started with a conservative (Reagan) and was multiplied by two more conservatives (both Bushs). And considering the fact that the big bailouts started with a conservative (Bush, again). Considering the fact that unions were formed for a very good reason (to counter inhuman working conditions imposed by corporations). I guess you forgot the 300+ people who burned to death because their employer locked and barred all the exits and all the people who slowly died horribly of black lung for lack of any mine safety. Considering all these things, your ultra conservative rant seems to just fall apart.
But at least you properly called us Michiganders. And for that, you're all right in my book.
CyberSurvey: The end is nigh?
My watch ends at midnight every night. Well, it actually just starts over. The week ends on Saturday. The year ends on Dec 31. The decade ends on Dec 31, every year that ends with '9. The century ends on every year that ends with '99. The millennium ends with every year ending with '999 (we've had two since Christ was crucified).
In every case, the marking of time started over without causing any great upheavals. Time has yet to end at midnight, or at the end of Saturday, or on any Dec 31. Neither does the Mayan calendar end. It merely starts over just like everything else. There's no reason to believe that it will cause anything, cataclysmic or otherwise.
Sarah Palin's 'Rouge' book criticizes McCain camp, clothes, Couric
I have but one problem with Sarah Palin. I have no problem with the way she ran Alaska or with the way she runs her family. I have no problems with the way she ran for veep and I certainly have no problem with her writing books and going on speaking tours. She certainly deserves every penny she gets from her supporters/admirers.
What I don't like is the fact that she still talks about "govt. death panels killing grandma" when she knows full well that private insurance companies have been running the exact same death panels that have been killing grandmothers for over 30 years now. She knows it and still refuses to say anything about it as if it's OK for private companies to kill grandma but not for a public organization. I cannot abide such hypocrisy.
a uterus is a private matter
I did not like the war in Iraq, Abu Ghraib or Gitmo either, but my tax dollars went into funding them as well. I judged at first, but I eventually forgave those who ordered it and carried it all out. It was a "character building" event for me. It took some doing, but I managed to forgive all transgressions (to my moral and ethical sensibilities) on all sides. 9/11 and the wars, torture, etc., don't bother me anymore. But because I judged, I had to forgive, and then to ask for forgiveness in my turn. I'm certainly not perfect and hope that you not make my mistake. But feel free to do as you will. What you do is between you and God; not mine to judge.
At least you claim a pragmatic reason for it - money. But do you want to withhold money because you judge those who receive abortions or simply due to a cost/benefit analysis? I need not hear the answer - just ask yourself.
I must go now, my daughter wants to go bowling today. So I leave you with an ancient Egyptian blessing - paraphrased, of course.
May God always stand between you and harm in all the empty places you must walk
a uterus is a private matter
It also says something about not judging others....
The way I figure it, the whole issue is between a woman and God, I would not want want to put myself in between. I have enough on my plate without trying to do Gods job too.
We all read about what happened to the last guy who tried to take His job away from Him...
CyberSurvey: Tough love
For experimenting with drugs - no. But if my kid was nearly hooked and could or would not show some restraint... Turning my kid in would be the last resort. I would rather have a live kid with a record than a dead one, or a junkie.
