Cassie, you need to stop watching Oprah; and Dr. Phil too!
Most parents are fully capable of dealing with their children's misbehaviors - without the (help?) of government authorities and psychoanalytical professionals. It's just part of the responsibility.
Get a grip.
Tough love
What a waste of an opportunity to teach your child.
This father was obviously not very involved with nor
educated enough to see that his child needs ALL the
facts about what she is doing. The ramifications legally,
biologically, and morally.
Getting involved with your children is the most important
job a parent, Person, will ever have.
Remembering that there is a huge difference between sparing the rod and damaging your child forever with a memory of ANY
State run correctional experience. The job of parenting belongs to the parent.

sqrell...If you find drugs on your kid you have already failed in your parenting skills. At this point if you don't get professional help you become an enabler.
Tough love
If I found drugs in my childs possesion that were being used illegaly I would not call the police. I would handle the situation myself. My children know exactly where I stand when it comes to drugs. That is what parenting is all about. I do not need someone else, or a village doing my job as a parent.

Truthdog, you are correctomundo!
This "Reefer Madness" charade has gone on far far too long. It's perfectly legal to sit in your front yard and smoke the Zoysia or the Kentucky Bluegrass. And you can eat your Carnations too.
But "Daddy" will feed you to the Sheriff if you pickup a joint! He's more interested in being a bully than in raising a daughter ...

Well, would you call the cops if your son/daughter was caught with alcohol? Underage drinking is just as illegal, but people don't seem to think of it in the same light as marijuana. You're right, it's not the same--alcohol impairs you MUCH more.
Tough love
Absolutely not. If I did, my kid would never trust me, ever again.
First of all, this is a plant. A plant that has been unjustly demonized for decades and we are now seeing all of the many benefits it possesses. For all you naysayers, I dare you to look it up.
Yes, the kid was probably too young to be experimenting with it. But would you rather she visit unscrupulous dealers to obtain her smoke?
How many of you hypocrites drink booze regularly? Or pop prescription pills like candy? Both of these vices have been proven to be way more harmful than cannabis, but socially acceptable. If my son was drinking regularly I'd be more concerned.
Getting the police involved solves nothing, it only makes matters worse.
The war on drugs has been an abysmal failure and has cost our country billions while ruining an untold amount of lives. Yet it will go on because of the amount of money that can be made enforcing it.
My view is that this plant is an herb, it was placed here by God to help us, medically and industrially. Yet the faked hysteria of the 1940's carried over until most people believed the lies and thought pot would make you want to kill people (reefer madness). The prohibition of alcohol was a failure and so has been the prohibition of marijuana.
You cannot overdose on pot yet our culture glorifies alcohol consumption. I guess it's OK to poison our bodies but God forbid you try to placate your body with an herb you can grow in your backyard. Legalization will happen, it's just a matter of time.
The hypocrisy this subject brings out is unbelievable and this dad is a jerk. If your kid is out of control it's probably your fault and maybe you need to look in the mirror.

I have no children but I voted "no' becasue, how can you turn your children over to a victimless crime? Sure you can go down any dilapitadated street in a poverty-sticken neighborhood and see the devastastation of drugs-BUT can you can pin it on your kid? NO! Until someone succumbs to their own vices and addictions, and the law enforcement officers of our fair judicial system pins down evidence of our kids wrongdoings then-what?. Until then, the FBI, CIA and the DEA needs to track down all of these major drug dealers that allow access into our country by means of boat or air, in the first place...no one on this website is guilty.
Tough love
I have dealt with this and it hasn't been just pot. My kids are now 34 and 30, but my son put me through the gamit! There is no sense in me calling the police, because I would be the one paying the money to get him out of the trouble.
I did, however; place him in drug treatment multiple times. There was a total of 5 times when he was a minor. None of the times worked, but it did plant the seed and showed him what to do should he ever really want to stop using drugs. At this time, he is another state, in a long term treatment center, and doing very well. The treatment, I think is a 2 year program.
I do know thta no one will get off drugs unless THEY want to, so all anyone can do is show the way.
Tough love
How close did she let them get to the firepit?
Tough love
My sister in law dealt with this a few years back.
She burned all the pot in the family firepit in front of him and her husband, took away car privileges, forced the kid to take the bus to school, grounded him from everything but after school sports, wouldn't let him hang out again with "friends" she beleived were involved, and then took money that he saved for a new stero to buy drug test kits and made him test a couple of times.
Tough love
Yeah, let's include all the times the junior got into dad's beer...
Tough love
To all of the posters that offer their opinions on what they WOULD do if they ever found out their children were involved in drugs.......
Let's hear from the parents who have ALREADY dealt with this issue first-hand. (I'm not talking about a child just trying a joint.)
Tough love
To call in the cops is a bit of overkill. If my kids were into drugs it would be handled at home (thru treatment and counceling). Experimenting is a small thing to deal with while hard usage requires stern measures. However IF police were called it would be a last measure option, only if harm was imminent.
Tough love
Yes turn him in. As most of you think that the goverment is responsible to handle all problems. As a parent you are incapable of dealing with this situation. You are the victim, right? You should not be held responcible.
Why is this even a question? Deal with your child preemptively and after the fact. Better yet quit using drugs yourself. Quit impowering the government to take away your god given rights as a parent.
