Turning a new leaf?

I believe a new day has come in Detroit. I knew this when Martha Reeves was voted out sooner than people imagined. We have 5 new faces in Detroit City Council and Ward Districts to add to it...how no one can see positve change after all this is beyond me...I have the citizens to thank. Detroiter stood up and said "No More" and now at least we have at least two eniterly different leaders over the council.

"Can't be any worse than the "gong show" from the last council!!!! ====== Fricker" Don't bet on it. The Lions fans thought their team would have a better reputation this year also.

JoAnn Watson's re-election is proof the Zombies are still voting from the cemetary because Detroit voter rolls have not been purged since 1992!

I'm Ok with everyone except JoAnn Watson. Anyone that voted for that tax cheat is an idiot.

When Mr. Brown comes to town, Detroit is going to get a political enema!

I am cautiously optimistic about the newly elected city council. Detroit has enormously challenging issues to address, in terms of crime, drug trafficking, gang activities, high unemployment rate, lousy school system, abandoned buildings, grinding poverty and the like. We need council members to check their egoes at the door and, in concert with the new mayor, focus like a laser beam on solving Detroit's problems.

Well given the fact that they know all eyes are on them I think they will act more responsible. However once people start leaving them alone who knows what will happen. One thing is for sure.. They can't do any worse.........

The new Detroit city council had better make better decisions. I would hope that the new council-elect members will start, before they're sworn in, to deal with the $350 million projected budget deficit it's facing, the crime that is going on in the city and the almost 30 percent rate of unemployment. I wish them, and Mayor Bing, nothing but the best in getting Detroit out of the quagmire it's in.

Give Bing and the gang a chance? A new no nonsense approach with new leadership. Got to be positive. 50+ plus years of Coleman / Kwame rule? The new leadership in Detroit has their work cut out for them and I for one support them and wish them all the best! Someone should ask Bill Bonds what he thinks? Now THAT would be interesting.

Because Detroit brand new council members have not yet had the time or opportunity to be bribed, extorted or otherwise affected, they can only be better.

And with no Monica Conyers on the council, it can only be a more adult, productive body.

Same church, just different people sitting in the pews (not puchs). Someone in here was blaming the media, but the fact of the matter is Detroit turned out to vote and elect in a very small (low) number. You had your chance to make change in Detroit. If you need to point fingers, point them at the people that didn't vote. Point your fingers at those that re-elected dear miss Watson (tax memory issues, ya right). Point your fingers at a former weekend news anchor that is in foreclosure under his own fruition.

I'll wait and see, but ain't holding my breath for anything. Politics as usual, just wait and see.

Re Charles Phew: Detroit voters don't seem to be thinking straight.

We will need to wait and see. Detroit governance will not improve until council members are elected by geographic areas where the citizens will hold them responsible for their actions and also demand that they actually represent the people in their district. When the council members are looking out for the needs of the voters they will be able to eliminate much of the bloated bureaucracy that hinders citizens and business from fixing up and recovering the city. Leadership requires a vested interest and accountability to insure that things are done in the constituents' best interest. This may also require saying no when their wants do not coincide with their needs at that time.
