Spouses on Junkets
I do not see the problem with them taking their spouses on the junket. As long as they choose another of their constituents to go on subsequent trips and their spouses do not go again until all of the constituents have made one trip. Otherwise, the spouse's trip expense is income and the IRS had better audit the return to make sure it was declared.

Bad Move Pete
While I deeply respect your past prior to becoming a Career Politician the fact you characters make the rules that you can live within just smells to high heaven. THE OTHERS HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE AND REALLY NOTHING TO OFFER OF ANY CONSEQUENCE HOWEVER THE ETHICS OF THE NEXT GOVENOR (who ever it is) CAN NEVER BE IN QUESTION, THEY HAVE TO BE ROCK SOLID BECAUE OF THE MANY UNPOPULAR DECISIONS IT WILL TAKE TO MAKE IT WORK. PLEASE PAY THE MONEY BACK AND DON'T GIVE YOUR ENEMIES ANY AMUNITION. IN MY OPINION IF WE CAN TRUST YOU IT'S OVER BEFORE IT STARTS. YOU WOULD MAKE A GOOD GOVENOR AND A GREAT SECRETARY OF DEFENSE IN FEW YEARS. THERE ARE A LOT OF GOOD HONEST PEOPLE LOOKING FOR THE VEHICLE YOU COULD PROVIE TO GET THIS STATE AND THIS COUNTRY BACK ON TRACK
Congressmen's Trips
I voted for Peters and even contributed to his campaign. NO MORE! I am unemployed and have been for the past 8 months and have been scraping by on unemployment insurance and what little savings I have left. For him use his office as a travel service for he and his wife is unacceptable and an insult to those of us suffering the consequences of a failed system of government. The next trip Peters should take is back to his home town to private life where he can try to make a living as a normal person. One year in office and already he is out of touch with the realities we face here at home. Goodbye, mr. Peters.....yer OUT!
Congressmen Travelling with Spouses
And don't forget ALL those Republican trysts. Remember that famous hike in the Appalachians?
Congressmen Travelling with Spouses
Well, at least they are taking their spouses, as opposed to the likes of John Edwards, Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, etc.
Lawmakers spouse trips
"The trips are allowed under House ethics rules adopted in 2007 in the wake of the Jack Abramoff lobbying scandal and were approved in advance by the House ethics committee."
What do expect when the fox sets rules for the hen house?
"God Bless our Commander in Chief and the Troops. We are blessed to have such an outstanding leader and decent human being in our Oval Office".
Well ok. But I'm not sure what he has done so far to deserve such praise. I'll wait until his term has ended before puckering up. As far as being blessed. That generally envolks God at work. I think the american people picked this guy over the other guy. Not sure what God's role was in that. But if it works for you that's cool.
Grand Marais is one of the most beautiful spots in this wonderful state. And they make really good beer! Did they ever dredge the bay for navigation purposes?
H1N1: long lines not enough vaccine. And who's in charge? A peek at government run health care?
Lesson learned maybe? "The Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home."
And now We don't know all the answers yet. And I would caution against jumping to conclusions until we have all the facts." Said President Barack Obama in the Rose Garden in reference to Nidal Malik Hasan's savage massacre of American soldiers at Fort Hood.
This lesson shared with some of the posters here too. Time for a deep breath.
Buying Influence
Why are "we conservatives" not arguing that more free-market competition in the health insurance industry is what is needed? Lobbyist and special interest groups have bought off our representatives in Washington. There is no other logical answer. A major argument of liberals for advocating a public sector health insurance plan is to increase competition and thus drive down cost by forcing the private sector to compete. Why are conservatives not fighting back, stating it is the private sector that can best provide more competition? Why are they not quoting Adam Smith when he talked about "rational self interest" and competitive markets in his book Wealth of Nations? He envisioned many consumers interested in buying goods and services from many producers. This "free market" system best serves the private and public good. Why are they not quoting Justice Louis Brandeis when he said in 1928: "Experience should teach us to be most on guard to protect liberty when the government's purposes are beneficial. Men born to freedom are naturally alert to repel invasion of liberty by evil-minded rulers. The greater dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding." Private markets and free enterprise are at the core of what conservatives stand for. So why are they not selling it to the public during this nationwide debate about health insurance? What our representatives in Washington should be doing is fighting to make the private sector of the health insurance industry free from the oligopolistic powers of many companies in the business. Instead, their votes are bought with heavy campaign contributions by these oligopolies. If the government were serious about creating more competition in the insurance industry, they would be spending time enforcing anti-trust laws and other regulations created to keep private markets free from monopolies and oligopolies instead of arguing over a "public option" to health care. This is shown by the following quote from By Halimah Abdullah of the McClatchy Newspapers: "As the Obama administration and Democrats wrangled over the timing, shape and cost of health care overhaul efforts during the first half of the year, more than half the $1.1 million in campaign contributions the Democratic Party's Blue Dog Coalition received came from the pharmaceutical, health care and health insurance industries, according to watchdog organizations." The Blue Dog Coalition is not alone. Sadly, it appears that before getting good health care reform, we need campaign contribution reform. The private sector of the health care industry should be set free by government looking out for its' citizens and enforcing anti trust laws. A free, competitive market will drive down the cost of health care. To paraphrase Ronald Reagan; "Trust, but verify." Government has let the health care industry get out of hand. If government does its job of assuring free markets, free markets will drive down the cost of health care and the public will be "Free to Choose."
Lawmakers Paid Vacations
Shame on these lawmakers who continue to feed at the public trough. With the terrible economy in Michigan it makes you wonder what these lawmakers are thinking. They are so full of themseves that they think they are entitled to squander taxpayers money. If the so called trips were so important to their doing their job then they should repay their expenses as thats what they are paid to do. No, you can bet your sweet bippey that they will convince themselves that the public are the beneficiaries of these boondoggles. A I said, shame on these uncaring bottom feeders.
Lawmakers spouse trips
This stinks to high heaven. If I wanted to take my spouse on any work related trip I'd have to pick up her entire tab. These overpaid dopes in Washington should do the same.
Lawmaker's trips questioned
These junkets provided and paid for by corporations and energy lobbys have no other purpose than to provide day camps set up to indoctrinate politicians on particular self-serving issues in elegant surroundings. No doubt the Lobbyists want the wives to travel, too; to discourage the men from getting caught hiring prostitutes and bringing embarrassment to the organizations as well as exposing their purposes and trail of snail slime to the public. This way they can continue their facades as "family men". Everyone involved with this BS should be embarrassed and ashamed, but thats never going to happen since ethics and responsibility isn't a part of any of these organizations or of the politician's personalities. They are all disgusting and set a poor example to the voters and for our children.
