Old sombrero or new?

Fly Dog, was that in the new Sombrero? I remember a gang of angry fans trying to stuff a Lion's fan into one of the cannons on that crazy galleon in the end zone. The cops got there just as they were loading the breach. I've always wondered if that was you. I always wondered how far you would fly. Is that how you got your nick name?

Dougal

I think we'd have to go back to the Eric Kramer playoff run (1 win). Before that would be 1970. If there wouldn't have been a typhoon in Dallas, that team may have won the SB that year. Instead they lost 5-0 at the Cotton Bowl! The downside from that year was losing to the last place Saints on a last second 63 yard Dempsey FG! Other than some great play from Barry, we've had NUTHIN" !!!!!

Huggy!

I'm with you on College football. It was great in the past, but then they had to mess with it and now I think it's not as good as it was. Kids coming out early is another thing that takes the luster off. It's still good, but when there are literally hundreds of teams, how do you wind it into a playoff and find an absolute champion any better than they did when it was voted on. I don't see it but I'm old school on this one. like a lot of things, though I consider myself a progressive person. There are a lot of good things in modern life, but there are some things they should leave the way they are!

I'm not a real big fan of the CFL. Toronto don't know how to do it! However, I've been to games in some cities where it's really successful and when seen in it's element, it's actually pretty good. I'm not trying to sell you guys on the CFL, but if they did put a 10th franchise down there, and did it right, it would be successful. I'm not saying it would take away from the Lions, but who wants to pay top dollar to watch every other team wipe their butt with you? I live in Toronto. It's not a good sports town. They do a lot of stupid things here when it comes to sports. Their ideas are just dumb and never work. I've seen them do some stupid things in Detroit too, but there is a big market for football there. The Silverdome was a dumb idea. I knew that as soon as the novelty wore off. They built almost the exact same thing up here with the Sky Dome. Only things they did better was build it downtown and put on a retractible roof (which is only open if it's 72 and sunny). I have been to Ford Field. It's comfortable enough, but I'd rather go to Soldier Filed or Lambeau anyday. My best sports memories were watching the Lions at Tiger Stadium. There were some days that were cold, but you lived with it for the glorious days with real dirt and freshly cut grass! Football should be played in a park, not an arena!

If it's done right, it could work. There would be 10 to 15k that would come over from Windsor. So there would only have to be 10 to 15K from the Detroit area. They would have to build a stadium to scale (25 to 30K) and it would have to be an attractive place with a park like setting and real grass. People would go, and have a good time. It would be cheaper than the Lions and within a couple of years they would be a contender (we know that will never happen with the Lions). What has been tried before was destined to fail. A massive domed stadium with Astro turf, half full, NO CHANCE! Remember the soccer teams (Detroit Express etc.)? They didn't stand a chance because they were trying to sell a product out of a massive 80K domed stadium, with the soccer markings printed over the football gridiron on plastic grass. They would be lucky to get 10k lost souls at those games watching the soccer ball bounce around like a ping pong ball! That was just a bad idea! A couple of years back Toronto got an MLS franchise. They built a 20K stadium for it and every game has been sold out since day one! The Argos play at the Rogers Center (Skydome). It holds 60K. They only get 25K at the games and it sucks BIG TIME. Everything has to be kept within it's scale. There is a market for it if it's done right. Problem is, people are too greedy and imagine it may be crazy successful and there will be people lined up outside that they can't make money off of!

Hey Hey!

Michigan are putting up a fight. Maybe we should wait till the game is over before firing RichRod!

Scatch

For conversations sake, I would guess Jenson. I think he played for him last week. I thought Ramirez was progressing OK this year then they benched him for Jensen, making out like they were having problems at that position. Jensen sucked and they put Ramirez back in last week (at least I I think that's what happened).

That's more like it! Your catching on. Forget all that positive crap! What did that positive crap ever get Billy, or Fly Dog?

Klatuu

Those were the days! I hated Woody Hayes so much, yet when he was gone, I missed him. There was nothing like the U M/ OSU rivalry in those days. I remember standing in my local bar watching that on a little TV above the pool table when Woody punched that guy. The sound wasn't on (as there was a Rock band pounding it out on stage) but everybody was glued to the TV laughing at Woody. That was the end of an era. Didn't realize at the time that I would actually miss that old prick!

I'm no expert on the CFL, but I thought Baltimore did win the Grey Cup. I think Montreal folded and became Baltimore. Then Baltimore got the Ravens and the franchise moved back to Montreal (something like that). Baltimore were putting 60k in the stands for that franchise which motivated the NFL to grant them the Ravens! I know they expanded into the USA big time (like about 6 or 8 teams) and the pressure was on to change the rules to American rules. They also got rid of the domestic/import rules etc. It didn't succeed because the franchises were too deep in the States and nobody could relate to Canadian football (much like hockey). Anyway, that experiment didn't work and since, the CFL has been rebuilt domestically and has gotten successful again. Once bitten twice shy, they don't have any aspirations of expanding into the States but I guarantee you Detroit and it's proximity to Canada (as well as part of the fan base coming from Windsor) could be a viable expansion city. The family who owned the last Ottawa franchise were from Detroit.

Scatch on Mack & Thomas

I watched only the first half of the Monday night game and I focused on Mack. He looked pretty solid to me. They mentioned that the Browns had been having exchange problems between QB and C but I think that was with Hank Fraley, who I'm quite sure started the year at C for the Browns. I think Mack played G earlier in the year (at least one game that I watched). Eric Steinbach (LG) gave up a big sack and John St.Clair (RT) jumped off sides a couple of times (very Lionesque) but Mack and Thomas looked like the real deal. Maybe they sucked in the second half I have no idea!
