DLS
DLS's schedule was awfully difficult this year. Of course, they did not beat any of the difficult teams they played, but it looks as though it is paying off. They are playing better every week in the playoffs. Next will be very tough for them.
The Scene, ahem.....
You could anticipate a CC Rockford game somewhere around Lansing. The semis are usually placed somewhere "fair" for both teams.
SHS vs. SE
My point was not the level of competition in the MAC Red is not good preparation. The problem is Stevenson had three teams sprinkled in a MAC schedule which had weak crossovers. They then start the playoffs with two non red teams which they can usually anticipate. Now in week 12 they finally see a non MAC team. Dakota scheduling Muskegon the next two years helps them in this scenario.
SE VS STEVENSON
The MAC scheduling practices may haunt Stevenson here. They played 11 games and all within the MAC. In fact, they just beat Mott for the second time.
The Scene, ahem........
DLS has to play SField next week which is a rematch of last year's semi. Rice and DLS would not meet until the finals. Clarkston and Stevenson in the semi. You may have to travel longer than 50 miles for a Rockford and CC semi.
Defense
If it was safe to say the best defense in the state, then they would have not lost four games. There are some great defenses out there. It is safe to say, starting with their game against Rice, then the Prep Bowl and into the playoffs the Eaglets might be playing their best football of the season.
Grosse Pointe City Champs
DLS v GPN was a much different game compared to GPS. DLS did not dominate GPS, but last night was a different story. The defense was very quick to the ball carrier. The biggest vulnerability at this point on defense seems to be the secondary as they give up the pass. Frequently, it is in the middle of the field. How about the Catholic League Central's 3 teams with 4 losses each who are now a combined 6-0. OLSM and Rice with two very impressive wins against very good teams.
The Scene, ahem......
Regarding the headcount, DLS is at 1650 and CC at 2094. Those are really 825 and 1047 since one gender schools are doubled for classification. So what if they play CC, GPN plays Mott and Cousino who are D1 while GPN is D2. This info is all at MHSAA.com.
The Scene, ahem.......
I don't understand how DLS dodged D1 play. Or do people on this forum not understand how the divisions are determined?
The Scene, ahem.....
DLS is fortunate to be in D2, but that is what their enrollment dictates. They are more fortunate with the district. If not mistaken, they would not match up with the Adams district until the state finals. That Adams road is very difficult with Rice, Lowell or Muskegon on the way. That on side kick was huge, and Verska stated in the paper that his staff noticed on film that South kept their back turned away from kickoffs. The philosophy seemed to be to keep running it and we will break one. They trust their defense more than their passing game and it looks as though they are not going to give their offense a chance to give up the ball on a turnover. This will be a great game on Friday against North. North was a tough opponent for DLS in 2006.
The Scene, ahem........
First needs to win and then make the playoffs with their points. That projection of their possible district does not have a strong enough top seed. That is how a DLS team gets shifted out to Rochester as in the past. They won't have a 6-3 team as a top seed. DLS is not in a good place right now if you saw them Saturday. This is a team way out of sync on offense and playing pretty well on D.
The Scene, ahem........
I understand the easy schedule criticism, but they have a hard time filling their schedule with local teams. As I have stated, no one program will do them any favors.
DLS
No doubt about it regarding Coach Verska. This guy has brought a great amount of toughness in the mold of CC. Not to say they are as good as CC over the long haul, because they are not. During his tenure, the Pilots have looked at the Central Div teams without being intimidated. They haven't won most of those games, but this is a coach who has won at least one playoff game every year they made it except once. They have made the playoffs 5 of his seven previous years. For individuals to be complaining about him is short sighted. As far as slappys, what is a slappy going to say about this season? The kids tried and it did not work out like they thought. No reason to get on the kids, because they are JUST KIDS.
The Scene, ahem.......
How does a team get chosen on reputation? The point system is posted on MHSAA.com.
The Scene, ahem......
Teams are not chosen based on reputation. Their playoff point averages are used as a basis to make it at 5-4 or to eliminate them at 6-3. If a team is classified as Class A you gain more points for beating them. If your opponents win other games, you accumulate more points. Also, Muskegon lost to Rockford and is on the ropes like DLS is.
