Blow Hard
I appreciate your thoughts Apple. I will try to add my two cents as I get time.
Contrary to what Dillon may think, I'm not adverse to having my position challenged. The fact is I've been unable to definitively resolve personal conflicts on these subjects and stake out a firm position.
I felt you were answering Leo's questions more so than mine. However, it seems apparent that you agree; Government cannot grant rights without trampling on others.
Should we as free citizens have the right to opt out of government controlled programs? Social Security for instance...Or how about business? Should they have the right to opt out of un-employment insurance for it's workers? What do you think our economy would look like if no un-employment benefits were paid out by the government? If you think foreclosures are bad now can you imagine the downward spiral?
What I'm getting at, is many government programs are taken for granted by most Americans. What we refuse to see is that the government has become ubiquitous in our lives. As I said, this in not the eighteenth century. The spread of government, for good or bad, has become a "leviathan." How many people could actually get by without the aid of government programs?
Gotta run. I work for a living. I also need to spend time with family and friends. Sorry Dillon if I don't meet your expectations here on the forum. I used to expend considerably more energy here. Can't do it any longer. Perhaps some day I might. Maybe I'll get back to being a know it all blow hard. Isn't that what you thought of me Hootie? LOL
Marching on to War
Again this cuts to the chase. What should our government be spending money on? Democratizing the world? Eight Mile was all for that, while Steve tells us Democracy is a joke. What gives. This is my whole problem with the "conservative" position. Where do we draw the line on what our government should involve itself in? If we have billions to spend on nation building, why aren't we spending it on our own citizens?
Thousand Man March
I guess it didn't bother you when our government spent billions of dollars marching on to Baghdad, aye Eight Mile? You're a joke when it comes to conservativism.
Movie Producers and Other Non Essential Entities
I had to laugh at myself. I wasn't following the thread too closely. At one point I thought Leo was a movie producers or some other such non producing producer. LOL
Being a self proffessed Libertarian I can relate to the Moochers in Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged". However as I explained years ago to Steve, I'm not a religious "Randian".
Who is a producer? What does the term mean? Should people be paid for administering government control? The problem with Rand's "Utopia" is it's a fairy tale. (Yes I have read the book). Unfortunately someone owned Galt's Gulch before the producers decided to squat on the land they occupied.
Who owned the copper in the ground that Francisco d'Anaconia pillaged to make his fortune? How was he able to lay claim to these mineral deposits? Ahhh the government. Yes that all powerful entity who decides who owns what.
Yes Dillon, these are amorphous questions, designed to cut to the heart of the discussion at hand. Or perhaps I'm just delusional, or I've had too many Bud Wisers. Just cracked my fourth. Is that too many. It's Sunday, and I'm trying to enjoy myself. You see I feel like I've been making money for a**holes too long. But hey I'm putting food on the table without confiscating anyones land.
Snake Oil
Your mind is always in the gutter Hootie. LOL

Sign me up Hootie.

It lengthens it strenghtens, and it's only a dollar.
We're Not In Kansas Toto
Context!
We no longer live in the eighteenth century. To think the constitution can literally apply to the 21st is wishful thinking.
Ghandi
Ghandi had the spirit of Christ in him!
Property rights
If it requires me to farm ten acres of land to feed my family, and I have only five, I'm going to claim five more. What right does my neighbor have to twenty acres when his family only needs five?
Jumping into the Fray
Now to adress Leo and Apple's quandry...
Apple please explain this if you can. How can a government secure the rights of people without infringing on anothers rights?
Take property rights for example. Who has a right to private property? Doesn't a government have to claim land from another in order to set up laws that secure the right to property?
Ambiguity or Amorphous
No problem D.
It's my fault you can't follow my amorphous ramblings.
Like Leo, I often ask questions intended to reveal a persons inclinations that lie buried beneath the rhetoric involved in human communication. It may seem ambiguous at times. Like; Is Ghandi in heaven? A very simple question. And one that makes your answer ambiguous, or a question that may not square with your beliefs. If he asked whether a person in your congregation that died was in heaven, you would probably answer that you hoped they were.
If I'm not mistaken, Leo's query is designed to provoke the question; If someone doesn't believe as you can they be in heaven?
Mark my Words
Mark 6:4 Jesus said to the people, "Other people give honor to a prophet. But in his own town with his own people and in his own home, a prophet does not get honor."
Honor Among Friends
Dillon wrote: "I am not connecting with you. IMO, you write in the style of 'Wiser'."
I'll take that as a compliment. Not exactly sure how Leo feels, but I'm honored by the association.
Bud Wiser
Proceeding on Principles
Ahh Dillon...good question.
The first step requires knowing what you stand for, and sticking to it.
So I ask again...What makes Sarah so conservative?
I'm of to spend time with my wife. We'll talk again.
Good night all.
Eunuchs and Enochs
Pray tell Count. Give us all a lesson my friend. There are a few people here with half a brain.
