Ya know, my wife get's upset with me about vocalizing my objections to bigotry.
I have been politically correct about the n word, gay jokes, short bus jokes, sexist jokes, etc, now, for more than 30 yrs, and I let someone know what boob's they are if they use such words, phrases, etc.
It does get pretty uncomfortable sometimes, but it seems like the right thing to do. Maybe I am the boob.
Anyway, sorry if you think silence is the BIG thing to do.
I imagine you think it the Christian thing to do also, since you practice it, here.

Mirabelle, as I have explained in the past, I use several different computers and have not been able to figure out how to use the same moniker, as I forget passwords.

Hope this helps you sort out the discussion, although it seems pretty simple.
Hootie uses helmet jokes to get under someones skin. When he finds out you have special concerns about such usage, he does it more.

One more thing. After Hootie had used the helmet jokes, I had chastised, Hootie and more helmet jokes, my explanation of my special interest, Hootie, in his infinite wisdom, continued the helmet jokes (intensified yet).
And now his defense is that he wasn't attacking my daughter (which once again, I NEVER said he was. God how painful this is.) I really should check myself in somewhere, and I am not mocking the mentally disabled. I have a serious ego problem, if I care about what you people think.
Anyhow, so the disabled are legitimate tools of attack, as long as they are the not the target of the jokes. I would think myself insane, if I hadn't witnessed the silence of all you self rightious simpletons.
Hootie didn't do anything wrong, because he was just using the disabled to attack Leo. He wasn't attacking Leo's daughter so everthing was cool. Or it was Leo (which I COULD understand, without the TOOL) so let Hoot have his fun, even if it is at the expense of the disabled, because the idea of Leo having to wear a helmet because he is so disabled is funny, because it is, after all, Leo.

Hootie started the helmet jokes and I advised (probably not so gently) that such tactics were less than weak. After days of back and forth, and the ignorant boob acting just as he is now, I explained my 'special' feelings about the subject.
I ALWAYS understood that I was the target of the moron's attack. Not my daughter. There was no lie.
Maybe I am the thick one, and that using the disabled maladies to attack another does not insult that group.
But I don't think so.

I think it may be a cultural thang, as you are not alone. My wife is paranoid that I might blow up at any minute when people make their 'short bus' jokes. She would rather be silent about it.

Ya know, we did shop golf carts, at one time. Just so she could get back to grandma's without the nightmare of loading, unloading wheelchair, walker, etc.
They actually built a sidewalk, up here, in Romeo, just so SHE could 'wheel' to and from school. Big fundraiser, and all, many 'laws' kinda ignored.
She turned 21 this week. Gonna go buy her a drink, tomorrow.

I don't have any golf carts, but old wheelchairs, walkers, canes etc. Almost anything you can imagine. Once we even spent 10s of thousands of dollars for treatment in Miami. All for naught.
