Drew, your 7:32 again...
Dr. Lawrence Krauss, Speaking at Clark University, March 30, 2001
What is at the root of this appalling scientific illiteracy? I think a large part of the problem is that society doesn't think of science as culture. Our cultural icons and role models often proudly proclaim their scientific illiteracy--- almost as a badge of membership.
In many liberal arts colleges, science is treated like an option in a Chinese food menu, one from column B. We may force our students to read James Joyce for culture, but we never require them to read Galileo. I would claim, however that not only may Galileo be easier to read, he is often funnier---he would have made a great talk show guest if he were alive today.
