Ford to invest $2.3B in Brazil plant
Dennis p.,
Read both your posts. Thanks for the info. I imagine the European market has changed dramatically since the GM vs. German dialog started plus the fact, as GMzip pointed out, VW has really grown based on some solid moves over the last decade. Thanks

GMzip,
Ok by me I will just skip on down to the second paragraph of your note. Good point as it does appear VW is a dark horse and maybe starting to enjoy a comeback? They do appear to have affiliations with some solid brands? Little known fact VW was really starting to make a move here actually back 1998, here in the US. When James Fuller (VP for VW NA) was killed in the Pan Am crash over Lockerbie I think it really set them back. I met James at a grand opening for a new VW store once just before he went to London and he definitely had the charisma, presence and know to make it work. Real shame, good man. Anyway I do like VW and German engineering.

Dennis P,
In your opinion which company has a bigger presence in Europe, Ford or GM? Just curious. Or who has the better product? Thanks
Ford investing $2.3 B in Brazil!!!
Check out this post at the bottom by Reedman...
Great thing about this is the JOBS are staying in the USA. And it looks like another example of manufacturing fleeing the North to avoid the Unions? Oh well, at least the jobs did not go to Mexico or South America? Oh btw the way...Hats off to the UAW Ford folks who recently voted down concessions, you probably voted yourself and other Americans right of jobs? Happy now?
Story as relayed by Reedman...
Boeing broke ground today for a new $750 million plant for the 787 Dreamliner in North Charleston, South Carolina. The location was chosen both because of financial incentives offered, as well as the availability of a non-union workforce. In September, a small Boeing plant already operating in SC voted to decertify the American Machinists and Aerospace Worker union. The plant construction will involve about 2000 jobs, and about 3800 jobs will result from operation of the plant.

GMzip,
I am not sure where 69 is going with this but yes there were versions of this in the US and Europe? I do believe 69 already knows' the answer? And we all thought the infamous "suicide doors" were odd? Just found your post but I have to run and will be right back. I always liked the old roadsters with the "rumble seat"...now that was cool but unfortunately before my time and definitely before "launch me out of the back seat Nader". Nader would have had a ball with that one after singlehandedly destroying the Corvair?
"Chinese Handcuffs"
Chinese handcuffs scenario?
Remember those tricky little sleeved/woven cuffs? How fitting...slip on slip off? No resistance and you can most assuredly get away?
Just sounded appropriate for how this case will probably be handled?

Kojack59,
On behalf of a greatful Nation...thank you for your service. And I hope common sense prevails with your request to the congressman.
Edsel
Guy down the street "had" a 57' and what sticks in my memory is the "push button" tranny controls in the middle of the steering wheel? Slap a good old fashioned "suicide knob" on that wagon wheel sized steering wheel and you were ready to cruise. What a boat...but what a classic boat.

GMzip,
***Nice thing about the high red line was you didn't have to shift gears as often on short sections of small courses like Waterford and it was great for gymkhanas...you could just let it wind out.***
Oh yeah Waterford Hills, great place to run a sports type car. We had the pleasure of driving Special Edition 1988 Olds Calais's, Quad Four, 185hp, stick shift on the track. They had an "extended redline" which also made it fun. Basically just get it rolling, stuck it second gear and blasted around the track. That one straight away was fun and just long enough to get you in trouble. Saw a couple folks take it too far and ended it up on the infield grass. That was a hoot! Mud flying, grass...lot of it ended up in the car! You had to keep the R's up on those overhead cam jobs because they really did not start "breathing" till about 3 grand. But after that they would fly. Quads had a high rev line but I can't recall how high? Got to tell you that was FUN! For a small track we sure had a great time.

GMZIP,
Mannnn...that sure weren't no family car? Gots to uze a little slang for e-ffect. That's cranking some R's? Over 8 grand? Sounds like you were more of a road racer as we used to call it.
Most of the folks I ran with were "straight line" draggers. My true rod would have been my 66' 442, pretty much stock except for a little head work, springs, anti pump lifters and a factory W30 cam. Did not come anywhere near those kind of rpm's but it got the job done. Lots of torque. Olds were never known for being strokers so best I could do was a little over 6 grand. Olds were not revvers like Chevy small blocks and your MG. But the "chambered exhaust" on this beast would crackle real nice at idle and on full throttle it sounded like the hood was going to be sucked right down into the tri- power set up. It had much better response after dropping a Holley dual feed / Eldebrock on top. Lots of fun. Blew a lot of trannys but never the engine. Stock 4 speed Muncie aluminum was just too weak for GM muscle cars back then...ya needed the famous "RockCrusher"...oh well...back to reality?

GMZIP,
Yes indeed, Good discussion, good points now back to the meat of it or should I say "Iron"?
Best, most reliable "engine" you had in a vehicle? Something that you literally beat the crap out of but it would not quit?
I have personally made it over the 100,000 mile mark with a few engines but the one I was hardest on was a "326" cu in. in my old Lemans. Next choice would be the "slant six" in my old Duster. You just could not break them? I have a Safari 4.3 V6 that is well past 130,000 and going strong as age and caution have slowed me down (thank the Lord). What do you think?
Ford vs the others
GMZIP,
I agree that you should pursue every "opportunity". But when someone states he had no intention of purchasing and just looking for a handout...that is not an opportunity lost just someone looking for a freebie. Let him go for the doughnuts and masssage at VW, OK by me. I agree about the "bird in the hand" but don't need a "cat waiting in the bushes"? Just my opinion.
Ford vs the others
Carnut,
First of all these folks are trying to make a living and you have people coming in with absolutely no intention of purchasing a vehicle and wasting their valuable time? A salesperson is supposed to waste time with an "opportunist" and maybe miss out on a possible sale with a real customer because he has to deal with "($50 just to test drive a car- I'm not in the market, but I could use the $50!)? Now who is really being rude here?
Many of us have worked or are working in sales, service or commission based businesses, so sorry, but excuse me if I would rather assist someone who really needs the help and oh btw...I probably have a family to feed and bills to pay. T
A little respect even though you don't like him?
OK, you don't like McCain...but how about showing a little respect for a man who served his country and spent over 5 horrible, tortured years in a NV prison? "Walk or more like crawl in his shoes" before starting the mame calling and other garbage? Not necessary. Just state your case in a civil manner or don't say anything. Many of us have too many family and friends that never came back or suffered terribly serving our country. Enough said...

***"MORE FOR LESS, that's the Repubilcans motto."***
Good question BigMotown, these are scary times?
If the "repubs" stand for "more for less" which is basically work more for less money it appears the dems support a "less work for more money"? I don't know? I am just asking? Repubs and dems always seem to be at the opposite ends of everything and can never find the "middle of the road"? That must be why they always seem to be riding in the ditches?
Wow, an epiphany! Now I get it? With two on the road and two in the ditches no wonder their (pubs/dems) points of view are always so "slanted and cockeyed"! And that would also explain the "mud for brains"?
