Otto Kritic - Mr. Galbraith's words were never more true; GM has a plan to ramp up production by over 1MM vehicles in 2010 ( all assembly plants at 3 shifts before the 2011 model year ); the only reason for this >40% increase is that GM MUST stick to the plan presented to the US Treasury to obtain the bailout money; there is no market study, consumer spending study, or other economic basis for this massive increase in production; this strict adherence to a plan that does not recognize today's market conditions ( rising unemployment, house foreclosures, default on auto loans, etc ) is a BIG destructive force; unfortunately, it will not only affect GM, but all NA manufacturers as GM will be forced to deeply discount their prices to move unsold inventory; it would seem that GM cannot admit that the PLAN, that they were forced to redo by the Obama government, needs a revision/more realistic targets; as someone else has already said - pride cometh before the fall; hope GM will wake up in time

Otto Krittic sez....I heard something very profound lateley from an economist on World News that's related to this point and how there is this onslaght on the middle class. His name was Mr. Galbraith if I'm not mistaken and he said something like this. (No quotes but close)Changes will occur from constructive forces but if that doesn't produce they will surely occur from destructive forces. Makes one think that's for sure.

the future of auto workers in the USA just grew a little bleaker; more 'permanent' layouts; more money given by the US Government ( American taxpayer ) going overseas to protect/create jobs there; GM's announcement that part of the $50B it received from the US government will be used to repay the German government, restructure GM Europe ( est 3B Euro = $5B US, plus cost of new product development, plus covering near term losses, plus.....plus....); then GM is incurring the cost of shutting down Saturn, a division supposedly based on Opel, and importing cars from Opel; seems to me the way they're spending their money is, in no way, ensuring the long term survival of automotive jobs in the USA; quite the opposite really

Many of us do agree we must diversify and develop a new and progressive manufacturing base; continue to grow high tech and other business that is not so dependent on the auto industry. We still need skilled "hands on" people.

You know it is truly amazing how hateful we can be toward one another. Even if you wish to label differently. How could someone be so hard-hearted as to wish job lose on another? Your talking about complete families folding. Kids included. It is not the fault of the people for accepting good paying jobs. Nor is it the fault of the union to ask for a fair share of the pie when the execs are raking in millions from the sell of vehicles that they never touch. How could one be so cold as to wish their neighbors jobless? Just as well as you need the managerial side of manufacturing, you also need the laborer. One does not exist without the other. So with that being said, why shouldn't laborers be compensated well. They are the workhorses of the company. They are the ones that risk injury. Managers are just as expendable as laborers (plenty of unemployed professionals out there). But because they went to school their compensation is ok huh? So let me get this straight, just because an individual is BLESSED with a job that needs no advanced training they should be in the poor house. WOW! How shallow is that? No families deserve to exist in pleasant surroundings but those in which the parents went to school for advanced training. Well did you ever stop to think that we are all in this together. Barny Franks must really be brain dead. Today on CNBC the stock market channel he said that the 10.2% shows that we are not losing jobs as fast as we were and things have turned around. HA HA HA.

I worked in Pasadena for several years, at the corner of Arroyo Parkway and Glenarm. I know the area well.

GM and Obama had the bankruptcy judge change rules that had been in effect for over 200 years to help GM out.
LET US NEVER FORGET
GM and Obama have screwed to many people to stay in business past 2012. They screwed employees,suppliers, dealers,investors and taxpayers. Do you think that many of these people will buy GM products? Do you think these same people will want to invest in GM when it goes public again? If you don't sell cars you don't stay in business unless you move your operation overseas where it is much cheaper.
I also reported that it has been reported by Washington that GM will never be able to pay back all the so called LOAN that Obama gave them. TAXPAYERS MONEY

If only it were that simple. It's like the taxi driver that has a PhD (some of you know what I'm talking about). Though I'm admittedly not in the industry, I'm sure that not all line workers are a bunch of ignorant fools. They pay was good, and for some, that's enough. Those that have skills or training should land on their feet, but it may take a while in today's economy.
For those that joined the profession because it required few skills and had good pay, they're in trouble.
Either way, it's not a good thing for friends and neighbors to lose their jobs.
If nothing else, a lesson is learned for the next generation: learn a trade;, go to college, join the military; don't just expect a job to fall into your lap and then expect to work their for 30 years and retire. For most of us that world ended long ago. Google the words, "Shift Happens" to gain some perspective.
And now, back to cars. Imagine a turbo diesel Ford Flex that gets 30-35 mpg and does 0-60 in under 8 seconds. Now, keep the price below $23 grand for a base model. THAT would be a car people would buy!
