German indignation over General Motors decision to keep Opel

Excellent post.

I 100% agree, GM is screwed and they'll be all but done and gone by 2012. GM will have no choice but to move their entire operation to China. The Chinese (americans like it or not) are loving all of our automakers. And why shouldn't they? The big 3 are employing tens of thousands of chinese workers and in turn they now have money to purchase all these cars. It makes no difference what company you purchase your next car from. Each and every one has ties across the globe.

The writing has been plasted ALL over the walls for years!

The business concept is very simple. The big 3 are moving to other world markets in order to stay in business and seel cars. Americans cannot afford car that cost $40 grand. How do you think these automakers can build and make cheaper cars? The big 3 had no choice but to start selling to markets where people are buying.

Which is why it irks me when ignorant people try to slam china each and every which way. It it wasn't for china buying up all of Obamas debt and having their people pruchase cars. GM, Ford and Chrysler would already be out of business and there would be another 1 million people out work, scratching their heads on why did this happen.

Just think about it...No one had any real idea or answer how this mess of a country will turn out. All you read and hear is more terrible business news. More and more problem but NO solutions.

THIS IS WHAT XD PARIS FRANCE WROTE:

What Americans should be indignant about is that GM has taken the taxpayer money and gone on a spending spree that benefits overseas operations while screwing US retirees and former Delphi white collar workers! Where did they suddenly get the money to buy a bigger chunk of Daewoo in Korea, a stake in Delphi's European operations and Delphi's former Steering unit? Now they announce the have enough cash on hand to pay back the German government loan and pay for the restructuring of Opel instead of collecting cash from a partial sale to Magna? I guess with the US treasury behind them they have the cash to do whatever they want... that is except honor the commitments they made to their former salary employees at Delphi, bondholders, stock holders and so many other Americans.

XD PARIS FRANCE You are right about Americans should be upset with GM and Obama. Here are some other reasons:

GM and Obama had the bankruptcy judge change rules that had been in effect for over 200 years to help GM out.

LET US NEVER FORGET

GM and Obama have screwed to many people to stay in business past 2012. They screwed employees, suppliers, dealers, investors and taxpayers. Do you think that many of these people will buy GM products? Do you think these same people will want to invest in GM when it goes public again? If you don't sell cars you don't stay in business unless you move your operation overseas where it is much cheaper.

I also reported that it has been reported by Washington that GM will never be able to pay back all the so called LOAN that Obama gave them. TAXPAYERS MONEY

GM to Keep Ople

Correct! MAGNA did not even have the required start capital and was due to borrow 500 Million EUROS from the Commerzbank ( State owned! ) as their share in this buy out! And they were due to fire around 10,000 to 12,000 OPEL workers! This was their plan agreed in Berlin!

Wed. 11/04/09 06:54 PM

German indignation over General Motors decision to keep Opel

The proble is that OPEL in Germany is completely overmanned! It has quite simply too many workers in possibly too many plants! Full stop! And GM may be many things but it is not a public benevolent company to keep people of the streets!

So whichever way you turn it something must be done to dramatically reduce this large headcount which has been carried and nutured by the old GM board headed up by people like Rick Wagoner & Co!

MAGNA was going to do exactly the same thing - to reduce the European GM headcount by around 10,000 to 12,000 workers! NRWs Rüttgers is not a business man ánd at the forthcoming next state election in 2010 it is doubtful if he will even be re-electd!

GM is back on course but you cannot make cakes without breaking eggs! With a new CEO it will be a European success atory in say about 3 years down the line!

GM to Keep Ople

Thank goodness for those Ople workers. Having worked for a plant taken over by Magna, let me tell you there is nothing that could be worse for the workers. First their pay would be cut, then the jobs would in this case likely all go to the Soviet Union. They talk about being a people company, but they would rape and pillage your mother to make a nickel. I'm sorry but that is how I see it. Their must be some corruption and payoffs going on if the goverment "wanted them".

GM is now on course in Europe again!

The decision to retain OPEL/VAUXHALL was certainly the right one in many ways. However the way will not be easy or smooth to restructure the OPEL Europe Organisation because many in say Germany are thinking only in terms of OPELs 4 plants in Germany! But OPEL VAUXHAL has many more plants in Britain, Spain, Belgium, Austria , Hungary, Sweden that must be included in any reorgansation! And quickly!

Therefore it is essential to get the Governments of Germany, Britain and Spain on GMs side for a variety of very important reasons. This means that GM must find very quickly a very competent German CEO that is an entrepreneur and has the qualities of an Alan Mulally for their complete GM Europe operations!

A German speaking American or Briton is not enough and the present OPEL GM management are - sorry - just not the people for this very formidable and daunting task! It needs top class people like ex Ford Wolfgang Reitzel at Linde or an Utz Claasen ex EON Power to tackle this task! Over to you Fritz Smith?

DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT GM GIVES A DAMN? Juergen Ruettgers, the governor of North-Rhine Westphalia criticized GM's decision and vowed to fight for jobs at the Bochum factory, where Opel produces the Astra and Zafira models.

"After many promises and months of negotiations, the head of GM has left workers out in the cold," Ruettgers said. "This attitude from General Motors shows the ugly face of turbo-capitalism. It is completely unacceptable

While it maybe true that GM should not be selling Opel this just another example why GM can not be trusted

Germany's politicians fumed with anger and Opel workers canceled cost concessions and readied walkouts after General Motors Co. abandoned the sale of its European subsidiary to parts maker Magna International and Russian lender Sberbank

GM keeping Opel

Selling Opel and it's technology rights is the WRONG long-term strategy for GM. Better to shut Opel down than sell it off. Opel hasn't been profitable anyhow, so what harm comes from them going on strike? The chest-thumpers had best take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

German indignation

Yea well I have a lot of indignation about what the arrogant German's did to Chrysler. Where's our outrage over that?

Wed. 11/04/09 09:17 AM

Opel

In the United States we had to lay off, close plants, give concessions, retired workers take a hit, but in Germany the feel like in bad times they should have to give up nothing. Close there plants if thats what it takes to servive. Be thankful for those who have a job and pray for those who dont.

Nice....GM's own worker's at Opel are going on a walkout because GM will not sell Opel. Says, a lot about this company doesn't it? The artical also mentions how the German Government is not going to let GM get away with stealing their money. Unlike our Socialist Government.
