The PEOPLE paying the higher oil/fuel prices are the ONES that did not reduce consumption. So, tell US something new ... rising oil prices are certain ... the only unknowns are when and how much! The unknowns are around holidays, huricane season (LOL), and when the arabs want (i.e. when their profits slide-like less consumption) where have you been living everyone knows this. And our goverment is more than happy to not do a thing about it, after all they need their kickbacks too.

fhs1-its in the cash for clunkers enrollment policy. Also look in to the fed tax policy for the year 2009. So I ask you, where did you read that the Fed was going to omit these funds or do you believe everything your told/read?

Right, wrong, or otherwise, the average fuel economy of roughly 680k vehicles was increased from about 15.8 to 24.9 mpg combined average. At an average of 15K miles/year, that would be a savings of about 18 barrels of petroleum per vehicle year ... or a little above 12 million barrels of petroleum worth $0.9 BILLION (@ $75/barrel) saved annually for the C4C replacement vehicles!
If that is all imported oil, it puts $0.9 BILLION back into the domestic economy .... generating somewhere between $1.4 and $4.5 BILLION in ... NEW ... TAXABLE DOMESTIC ECONOMIC ACTIVITY ... PLUS ... a bunch of NEW tax revenue (without increasing taxes or fees)! And that is ANNUALLY!
Just for grins, how many new vehicles would $1.4 to $4.5 billion per year of NEW economic activity buy?
But please feel free to continue arguing about the validity of the Edmund's article and how C4C was a wasted effort.
At least C4C helped reduced the excess auto inventories justifying restart of production and bring some folks back to work. I guess that is a bad thing the way some are commenting on theis forum.

This economy is essentially dead in the water, a period of controlled and uncontrolled collaspe! People want fiscal responsibility when there is NO JOB and all that is left is the credit card.. So instead of losing a key industry we force fed it .. and lo and behold the economy posted a 3% gain. Cutting taxes would have worked except the idea of common everyday people getting a big tax cut makes rich people crazy since they pay big taxes. So to get money moving in a real way.. Cash for Clunkers was born, and it worked. The GM bankruptcy happenned and they are on thier way. Edmunds MAY BE RIGHT ON with 24K. My point is.. SO WHAT~!! This country was dead in the water and everytime the "Socialist Democrats" revive Capitalism.. the Republican Capitalists.. scream "Socialism" ..or worse.. Except the only friend the Republican Capitalists have is this kind of action to save good old fashioned Capitalism. Tax cuts didn't work..look where we are at! By the way if 4 percent of US households control 70 percent of wealth with centralized control..isn't that Communism with central control? So when the gov't acts like the 4% why is that an issue?.. since they do it EVERYDAY! .. and the gov't is just trying to get things moving. What a bunch of dorks! Thanks for reporting this, and reporting both sides fairly so that we can all come to our own decision on who is right.
I will only say this: When determining who is correct ask yourself what each party has to gain or lose by not being right? Edmunds doesn't car about the results of cash for clunkers. The White House certainly does.
I don't care if it only cost taxpayers $4500 per car. It was a waste of our tax dollars.

How dare anyone describe a government giveaway program as costly? How could an outfit that is recognized for its expertise on automobiles and their values possibly know as much as the democrat hacks who flush our tax dollars down the toilet with reckless abandon?
