Your sorta wrong with the remark about the only player he drafted. Andre Goodman was snatched up by BILL PARCELL's (another OLD lions pick) this off season. Hey John, How did these clowns in the front office let a 6'7" Nebraska C/T get poached off the practice squad. Geez. 2 yrs 2 guys.
The TE will be next, just watch. This Gronkowski kid can play the game at this level-"No question."-RIP Rod Marinelli the latest fall guy. USC could beat this team for God Sake! It's true. I wonder IF Mike O'hara still thinks this team could beat Buffalo or Cleveland?...bless his heart. Let's go Red Wings!
Got your facts mixed up a bit there. Goodman played out his rookie contract then signed with Miami after the '05 season. He had a really good year last season with the Dolphins' turnaround, then cashed in with a big (too big) contract with the Broncos this past winter.
We'll see what becomes of Murtha, but I don't think they'll end up lamenting that one. Gronkowski has to become a better blocker to make an NFL roster, but he's got the physical tools.
I picked 'em to beat WAS, STL, CLE and SF. Bless my heart, too.
re: coach, pre season cuts etc.
John that reply of your was truly Above & Beyond. Thank you for it. You won me over before the season started, and there was a time when I was a critic after Mike had (past tense) sorta (keyword) retired.
Anyway enough of the man crush @ midnight. Just can't sleep for some reason. When I saw they resigned Standeford, tried out Leon Lett, & had gone public with the secondary concerns it got the wheels turning in regards to some of the earlier cuts like John Standeford.
I discovered no other team had signed Red Robin, Chris Roberson, and the local all heart final preseason cut #39 Stuart Schweigert. That guy played well, and showed some REAL passion.
So I guess my question is, Why Do you think he/they didn't catch on with another team. Mainly interested in #39's story as I read Jim's comments about Ramzee (Red Robin). Hope he's the next Andre Goodman actually.
This Coach is actually a lot smarter than I originally...
...Thought. Well, maybe. He tries out the OT that green bay is likely to sign. Now that's smart. Especially since they play the packers this week. FINALLY someone with brains, unlike the old Meat head GM Mr. Ford ditched last year.
Now they just need Gunter to recruit Mart Shottenheimer for a FRONT OFFICE position of HIS choice, and this team could go .500 next season. After all, three heads are better than one. Lewand & MayWho aside. I'm still on the fence in regards to those two guys, but to their credit it seems better. How could they do any worse than Millen, really, so I think the bar is set low & they both likely get plenty of time. Tom admitted he's no football man & Marty is, so it's also a "no brainer."
Shottenheimer would provide a real nice insurance policy, and keep these bean counters on their toes...sorta like his buddy Gunther does with his Defense. Ok enough. It's never going to happen, but people once thought the world was flat too.
HEY JOHN, what can you tell readers about two of these practice squad guys, and some of the other season cuts? ie. #33, #38, #39, being the cuts, and DeAndre Wright, and this Taurus Johnson WR guy?? Is Taurus related to Calvin or Bryant Johnson? I like that they brought # 16 back. Again, very smart I think.
I am curious about those DB's in light of the secondary Woes, but also see some serious improvement over last years CB's regardless. Thanks again, -sp4gm
Wait, I thought "the bar is high"?!?! Schottenheimer goes way back with Gunther, but if he were to give up the good life to come back, he'd want to run the whole show with a team that has a chance to win it all. That's not here any time soon. And Schwartz is your young Schottenheimer, in that regard. He took this job because he shared a philosophy with the front office and saw an opportunity where he'd have a say in things, not like the one Jim Zorn found in Washington, for instance.
Not sure which guys you're referring to re: the pract squad guys and the #s, so post another question with names. Wright is gone, cut on Tuesday. Taurus isn't related, but he seems to have pretty good hands from what little I've seen. Doesn't have the speed to make it, more than likely. I think Standeford could be a short-term thing, just to get them through this week with Calvin hurt, but we'll see. He's an obvious choice because he was here all offseason and knows the offense, so he can step right in and play Sunday in a limited role. Talked at length with Gunther today about his secondary. Wrote a bit about it for tomorrow and will blog about some of the rest of it. Upon further review, Manuel wasn't as bad as I thought, Delmas still makes some really glaring rookie mistakes, and with Simpson still on the shelf with a hamstring, they'll probably be your safeties again against Green Bay, so cross your fingers. Henry's staying on the bench for now, which means Buchanon and James are probably your starters, with Hobbs as the nickel and Henry as the fourth. Faggins' recent track record doesn't offer much hope that he'll be an answer back there, but we'll see. Here's Jimmy???
What TV show was Jim Schwartz suppose to be on today? He was gonna be someone's guest for an interview on fox I think?
Please let the man know that call last week, with the recorded message, was kinda too political after the victory over the skins. Did you hear anything about the DL inc. sending out their recorded messages to season ticket holders? It was smart I guess, but wish they would have kept it under a minute. It went a 1:20 (Hope they are in my network).
Oh yeah, by the way, Doug Williams was talking some smack after that game & a bunch of us @ Elwoods started chanting back at him. He claimed that the game was Detroit's superbowl blah, blah, but he still doesn't hold a candle to Carl Eller in that department. Some Lion in civilian clothes had a skins helmet that got smashed in the street about two hours after the game. It was fun.
They need more of that kinda stuff & less political junk in my opinion, tell old Jim that too, would you please? Us Diehards do applaud the efforts though.
Yeah, in-season, it's hard to find the time to do a lot of that stuff for a head coach, but I thought it was a nice idea to at least let the fans know they're loyalty is appreciated with the phone call. This summer, Schwartz was out and about a lot as the team tried to reconnect with fans and start the long-overdue re-branding. And whatever you think of the product on the field, at least they're trying to be more attentive to their fans' needs, with some of the ticket packs and all-you-can-eat seats, etc.
How do I obtain
A copy of the "THE HIT" from the MNF game from Oct 31st, 1999? This being the ten year reunion, and celebration of the famous hit Corwin Brown put on Keyshwan Johnson when his helmet came flying off afterward.
You know the one?? In Today's NFL (ten years later) it would draw not only a 15 yard personal foul, but a fine for sure.
I got Wings Kronwalled photo from last year, but cannot find a Novemeber 1st front page copy of the news or free press online. I so want a Photo File (tm) type shot of that play. Help! ie. John, Deags, Disco, S-n-p, Jdavis, Vegas 4 sale, Anybody know how I can find a copy of "The Hit"?
P.S.: Ernie is FAR FAR from the problem on this team. The guy has had 100+ tackle seasons every year for gods sake. He's been playing hurt for 3+ yrs now, cut the man some slack. This Levy guy needs a new # 4 sure. Peace, Love & Unity! -TDLDHFC Out.
went to school with corwin, so maybe i'll call him and ask.
no, seriously, try our library's main #: (313) 222-2090
in the meantime, enjoy the video clip of the hit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zsq45OkEUs8
Pre game pod cast?
Will there be one on the 20th? I heard a rumor about free detnews.com T-Shirts? I hope Mike O', and Mr. Foster show up, and Deagle doesn't. Lol Missed the podcast last year myself. I'll be ready for my interview @ 11a.m. sharp John. I need to make peace with Mr. Parker, because for awhile I was upset at him for the Marinelli stunt. Will he be doing the WDIV thing live before the game? TOTAL JOKE. On the road to 2-1 BABY! More Kool Aid please..We like it, We Love it, we want more of it, unlike the kids in Arkansas. GO LIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If there's a webcast tomorrow, it's news to me! :)
But I'm sure there will be others down the line -- will keep you posted.
We're doing chats pretty frequently now, including gamedays with Twentyman and Mondays (at noon usually) with your old pal O'Hara.
Adding depth @ what cost
Dear John,
Do you think Jack Ikegwuonu will catch on with another team now that the Eagle's cut him? Heck, he could be hurt for all I know, but this guy was a Troy Polamalu for the Wisconsin badgers a few years back. You being a U of M guy should know how good this guy played vs. the Wolverines, and in the Big Ten conference.
On September 23rd 2006, he was all over the field @ the big house. Why do you think Philly cut the guy? I know he made some bonehead moves off the field, but he did get acquitted on those x-box charges. Lol. I watched this guy shut down Steve Breaston, and I think he'd potentially be a great Gunther Cunningham type (ie. Plays Physical). Then again, so did Schweigert, and he didn't make the 53 man roster either.
I know, I know, Get a life. LOL
They need depth in that secondary, and on the D-line, more than any other positions IMO. Take care, and enjoy the opener.
P.S.: IF (big word) they can win 2 of the first 6 games it should be enough to satisfy us starved fans for a bit, but they go 0-6 & Oh Boy, look out.
Eagles cut him last wkd and he cleared waivers, so Lions obviously didn't like him enough to grab him then. Ended up back on Eagles practice squad this week, and I'm not sure he's the same player after that knee injury last winter -- it was career-threatening at the time.
Russ the intern for Jay Leno??
Oops,, wrong intern. Sorry. Hope they keep Leno completely out of this season.
The free comedy concerts was nice of him though.
Anyway, back to interns (ie. Robert Porcher) they need to send Robert on a recruiting mission to get us Kevin Carter @ the DE position. Carter with the new LB's could = 2 or 3 extra wins this season. If you get the chance to interview Porcher ask him for his opinion of Carter. Thanks again. This wannabe GM business is getting harder & harder every year 4 me John! Lol-- P.S: I renewed.
I knew you'd renew!
Yeah, one thing to keep in mind with vets like Carter. I see a few of them still out there, in part due to contract demands it appears. Vested veterans have their salaries guaranteed for the season if their on the opening-weekend roster, so don't be surprised to see Derrick Brooks and a few others sign after the opener. Not sure if Carter falls into that category, though. We'll see.
Guess I was wrong & you were right...
Regarding Rudolph Hardie. Last year Buster Davis did make the colts squad though. However, that was "last season" & is now as they say-- History. Like the song goes "Cause that was then...& This is Now." Ok enough of that.
Can you give us attention to detail lion fan types the story of #77 hurting Hardie in last weeks game vs. Indy?
I since noticed Rudolph is no longer on the Colt's online roster or depth chart. Some may wonder why I care so much about this, well the answer is simple--watch Hardie in the game vs. the Vikes. He looked solid, a sack, & a few nice tackles.
Like you had said John, he may be best suited in the Tampa 2 system.
Is the dude going on IR?
Did Cherilus have it out for the guy or what? The injury did draw a 15 yd call on 77...just saying,, it could be a nice side note for your blog.
No, I don't think there was any lingering bad blood there. Mild-mannered Cherilus just has a mean streak that flashes every so often. (See Jared Allen last season, for instance.)
Hardie was waived/injured and went on IR last week.
Deags & Derrick
Ok. Sure Deags, but just remember, your local NOVI car dealership sponsored the game on the boob tube. LOL. If Wiliams doesn't make this team he would be scooped up by your Patriots the next day, and if you don't know that's true then you know a heck of a lot less about the NFL then you lead on to. Don't worry I'm still a huge critic, I just pick my posts, and keep them to a minimum these days. In fact, I vow to post 100 times less than you, and anyones else from Novi. You obviously need another $60 per/hr appointment there guy, and I want you to know--I've got alot of room to talk. OTFLMFAO & Go Loussers!
Why didn't Derrick Williams...
...START the Cleveland game @ the WR position???????????
Please John ask this new coach that question. Thanks Sir.
(Geez that's ROCKET SCIENCE) Anyone else see a PSU game the last 3 yrs????
He had a decent first game, obviously, but hasn't been impressive at WR in camp, quite frankly. Hasn't shown what he was supposed to in the return game, either. We saw a couple more drops/fumbles from him at Cleveland.
Sad state of Lion Football
That's funny Vegas-I read the very same thing about you. Let's get back to "Lions Talk" & not clog up John's forum. The guy is growing on me for some reason.
Is that a compliment? Or is it like the pile of laundry growing in the corner?
Sad state of Lion Football
RE:
I can see why also. I'd be skeptical of the D Line too John. Again, your right!
Last year it was Buster Davis & this year it seems to be Rudolph Hardie. How did they let this guy get out of town???????? When did they release him John? After watching the guy play end vs. the Vikings, somebody could have used him especially after Jared DeVries went down...Oh well, pass the beer nuts.
Fell asleep watching Vikes-Colts game replay on NFLN the other night and it was early in the game, so didn't get to see him play. But he's a guy they brought in late last season and he was with 'em until right before training camp, so they got a long look at him. A bit on the short side and definitely didn't distinguish himself from what I saw in OTAs, so can't say I have a problem with it. Maybe he's a better Tampa 2 fit, though.
Better than M&M's
...Name that candy. Quick! Can't we all just get along. Lol
Hey John, How about that interview now? After-all,
I've got to be doing something right, Vegas (4sale) hasn't been around since last month on the 15th or so. He did make me smile though. I'm currently in the same category as the diehard from Tallahassee (i.e. 15.2%/MARVIN group). Such is life.
Have they fired any janitors, grounds keepers, or equipment assistants in Allen Park yet???? I best get me a sign with "WILL Work for WINS" printed on it. DARN IT! My Fantasy football kicked in again.
Glad your getting daily access back, and loved what you said in other previous offseason posts.
You have actually gained my respect after the agreement on the whole "Prove It" thing. Nice. Thanks, and I hope you stay candor. It serves you well, a very strong suit, and gives you the pulse of the blue collar fan base.
Maybe the boss will give you a even longer leash, and someday a opportunity to interview a few of us frequent local (nuts) forum posters. Lear jets not required for obvious reasons.
Last question, since the whole "Sunday Ticket" thing is out, how far will Leo fans have to travel to view blacked out games? Grand Rapids? Traverse City?
Get their passports for someplace in Ontario?
Posters themselves likely can answer this question ourselves based on last years blacked out games. Let's hear it folks. Instead of argue-- Lets hear from Who got to watch a blacked out game LIVE last year & why they bothered? Just Kidding. There was the whole "DIGITAL TRANSITION" thing so How is that going to affect the 50 mile radius blackout deal? If @ all?
Well, I'll say this: There's some other teams that are going to be joining them on the blackout list this season I think. (Jacksonville, to name one.)
Lions Offseason
Thanks for the major smile Vegas. Much needed.
How could I do any worse than Millen did since 2001? I doubt I could. Now this is my kind of "Fantasy" football Sir. hahahahahahahaha.
There's those smiles again. I think I'd need to interview with John before Mr. Ford though. As a sort of "tune up", before hand. In all honesty, I'd rather he interviewed me than Chris. I actually think I'd want it more.
However, first thing I'd do--Is get some darn former player's jerseys in the rafters of that dump. First phone call besides to family would be to Chris offering him a position in the organization of his choice.
Next, the roof would be removed so those same oversized jerseys could breath easier. Play through construction IF allowed, this would weed out the non loud visitors who are not Lions fans @ all, but simply there to brush elbows, and conduct corporate business meetings.
In the event a game could not be played due to all the noise, my next phone call likely would be to Mike Illich asking for permission to use Comerica Park for the one season. Otherwise, other sites would be discovered within Michigan until the top/retractable roof was fixed properly.
It would be as they say "To Be Determined", but would be appealing, and geared to the LOUD blue collar REAL FOOTBALL fan base, and NOT to the lobbyist who take up space, and do not understand the game. Without the knowledgeable fan base the organization is lost, and has no customers. Period!
So in my opinion they need to do a much better job, and start assembling new demographic teams including a complete overhaul of the front office. Sorry, but the truth hurts. Now lets VOTE on it (i.e. Roof or No Roof) Men or Mice. Footballers or Fu-fu men. Okay dreams over...DARN IT!!
If you would've just ponied up an extra $100-150 million to add the retractable roof in the first place, we'd have settled this several years ago!
