Change in assignment

How tough has it been John by going from the Red Wings to the Lions?

Tue. 11/17/09 08:12 AM

283-407-13

Very good response John. It's the record of the Lions since 1964, which is somewhere close to when WCF took over the reigns all by himself. Only in America can a business go this long, make this many mistakes, and still be worth over $100 Million. Will this be the Sunday we find out who has the worst NFL team?

Any idea what this represents?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Mike O'Hara's record as beat writer? Ha!

No, I'm going to guess it has something to do with the Lions' current owner.

Brett Favre

Any chance the Vikings will need him in the 2nd half?

Sun. 11/08/09 08:04 PM

Again....... coaching suspect

Everyone is healthy and you are gift wrapped 17 points. You have one of the best receivers and can't seem to find a way to get him the ball. Everyone looks tentative. These coaches are not doing a good job. Their teaching techniques are not working. This looks like another 3 year disaster. If Seattle would have spotted the Lions 24 points, do you think they could have won?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Yep, they'd have won if you'd given them a 24-0 lead. I'm convinced of that. This one wasn't on coaching. It was on a rookie QB making dumb decisions and/or bad throws, first and foremost. The only way you blow a 17-0 lead is with turnovers, and that's not on the coaches. That said, there were plenty of other mistakes besides Stafford's on Sunday, including the defensive coaches getting caught off guard for a stretch by the up-tempo (near-no huddle) Seattle offense.

Tentative might describe the kickoff return at the end of the first half, but to me that's more an admission there's no faith in the guy you've got back there returning kicks. Not a good sign.

Where are we?

Game with Seattle looks like golden opportunity to see where we are. Seattle is slipping and WE HAVE EVERYONE HEALTHY. You and everyone seem to be using the phrase that Stafford is rusty, Calvin hurt, dropped passes from 2nd stringers, etc. It sure would be nice to see the Lions play UP to their ability! Any chance the Lions will?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Well, they did. And then they did. What'd you expect?

Theft @ the Silverdome

Other than the 1991 NFC Central Conference Champion trophy, would there have been any other NFL trophies there? BTW, did WCF build any trophy cases at Ford Field? I still have my 1991 NFC Central Conference Champion sweatshirt, although my wife thinks I should get rid of it because it makes me look like a kid. Would it be considered an antique?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

A novelty item, certainly. But not quite an antique.

Mon. 11/02/09 09:04 AM

Destined ?

The Lions are bad, have been bad, have no acountability for being bad. They can't be bound for anywhere, they are stuck where they have been for years. Until the players/coaches have a risk for their failures, this will continue. Do the Lions have a plan for employees making mistakes on the job?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Anthony Henry wasn't on the field Sunday, you'll notice. Phillip Buchanon has been benched a couple times this season. Marquand Manuel got benched in favor of Ko Simpson. Aaron Brown got yanked from KR duties. Sims lost playing time to DeAndre Levy. Darnell Bing got cut to make room for Zack Follett on special teams. Jon Jansen appears to be back as a backup tackle this week in practice after starting at LG last week. But despite what Bobby Ross might say, there's only so many bus tickets you can write in the middle of a season. Cutting a guy to make a point and replacing him with somebody off the street who doesn't know the scheme at all doesn't really serve a purpose in November. In June or July or August, yes. Now? Not really. You're just further torpedoing your chances on Sundays.

Sun. 11/01/09 08:08 PM

10 points

This is crap! They had 2 weeks to prepare against a team giving up an avg. of 30 points per game. They took off the whole 2 weeks, coaches included! Will somebody make them aware of this?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Actually, just posted on the blog the thing that bothered me the most about a team coming off a bye: the fake FG. The offense actually was doing what I expected it to do today coming off the bye without CJ. The running game was somewhat effective (didn't expect much more without No. 81 to keep defenses honest) and they were setting up the play-action the way they wanted to. But the receivers made some really costly drops (I counted six today) and Stafford was rusty (also expected) and that's the difference between winning and losing for a bad team playing against another bad team.

Sun. 11/01/09 08:00 PM

Now What? , part II

Now that the St. Louis Rams! have come and gone, now what? the Seahawks!

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

And they'll feel the wrath of Aaron Curry and Cory Redding. It's destined, right?

Tue. 10/27/09 08:31 AM

Schwartz's 2nd Test

Since he passed his 1st test by beating Washington, will you pick him to pass his 2nd test this week against one of your bottom 5 teams? This looks like a good week to see what he"ll be as a Head Coach. A good Head Coach wins the games they are supposed to win, no matter what injuries his team has or will have, no matter what bad calls the refs make, no matter what the weather is, no matter what the economy is..........etc.

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Yep, agreed. My preseason prediction was 4-12 with wins over Wash, StL, Cle and SF. But I'll be particularly interested to see what they've come up with in terms of new wrinkles on defense (personnel changes? more zone blizes?) When you've got two weeks to prepare, you'd better show a little something new, and I think they will, though the most important thing for this team still is to cut down on the mental errors. They don't have enough talent to overcome the mistakes.

WCF

Has to have the worst winning % of any sport's owner in any sport, in any country, in any world. I assume he is a good guy but when is enough, enough?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

When he says it's enough. And don't hold your breath on that one.

By the way, I was stunned to discover when I started crunching some #s at the Super Bowl last winter that since 1972, when Bidwill assumed full control of the Cardinals franchise from his dad his teams were 229-339-4 -- a half-game better than the Lions at 229-340-3. Ford might be the worst -- I should probably look that up -- but he's got company.

Mon. 10/19/09 09:32 AM

1 more ? for the day

When Stafford is shown on the sidelines, he has ear plugs/phones in his ear. Can I assume he is listening to the Offensive coaches upstairs? Can I also assume he is not listening to "another one bites the dust"?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Yes, and it's actually funny to watch sometimes. On key plays -- third down, etc. -- you'll see other players not playing (inactive or on defense) coming over to find out what the play call is so they can know before the ball is snapped.

Mon. 10/19/09 08:54 AM

Schwartz

Last year at this time, Tennessee was 6-0, this year they are 0-6. Any of this have to do with them missing Jim Schwartz ?

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

If he wanted to run for mayor of Nashville, now might be a good time, yes. Actually, I noted in the NFL forum column this week that both Schwartz and Rex Ryan are missed right now in Tennessee and Baltimore. They miss Haynesworth and B. Scott, too, though.

Mon. 10/19/09 08:40 AM

John

.........Now What?.........

HDALE, Hillsdale, Mi

Bring on the Rams!
