Ask John Niyo about the Lions

Roy Williams

John,

I was watching the NFL channel talking about Roy Williams and his problems catching the ball. It seams to me that he should remove the face shield, the curved plastic could be distorting his vision just enough especially with his peripheral vision.

Watching several of his attempts was like watching a blind man.

I've always liked Roy, and thought his 1st down signal was a good way to energize the team, but he needs to do something to correct his mishandling of the ball!

In watching him on those replays it looked like a lack of hand eye coordination, give up the "cool look" of the shield and/or get an eye exam.

Please pass this on to him!

Just tired, Hamilton, Mi

That mishandling isn't just current. He dropped his share in Detroit, too. But I don't think Roy's all that interested in taking criticism right now. Just ask Michael Irvin.

Oh,yeah has anybody heard that Roy Williams is doing about as good in Dallas as he was when he was in Detroit? Often injured, never took himself or the game of football seriously, and never quite lived up to the #1 reciever's billing, dropped passes, did stupid 1st down signals when down 34-6...sums up Roy Williams. Even this year, people like Troy Aikman were questioning his skillset and seriousness about being the #1 guy. Now he has a severe shoulder injury that may remove him from playing at least a few games into the regular season. Mayhew outsmarted Jerry Jones and this situation pretty much proves that!

John,

I just recently seen on FREEP.com that Roy rarely worked out in the 4+ years as a Lion and is now finally get serious about being the best. That kinda ticks me off that Millen allowed this type of behavior for so long, not surprising that he had a 31-97 tenure in 8 years. Maybe if he had the balls to stand up to the players on the team maybe Kevin Jones wouldnt be an injury prone backup,Joey Harrington might have just perhaps gotten Detroit to the playoffs,Mike Williams would have shown enthusiasim, and Chuck Rogers would have broken his tailbone.....twice. Maybe this is an embellishment but it's more believeable then blaming the coaches he hired or the players he drafted for all of it. Do you think Roy will be the WR he thinks he is?

J.Davis, Schoolcraft, MI

It's a story that quickly got out of context. It's not that he didn't lift weights. He just didn't stick to a full-time, year-round regimen the way some others do. But I think it's safe to say this change of scenery -- and the new role/scrutiny in Dallas -- has Roy rededicated.

What are the chances that we bring Roy Williams the Saftey in for a visit. We could use some experience in the Secondary. Saying that I would like to see Henry moved to the free safety position and sign Roy Williams for our saftey spot.

rainmaker, Anderson, sc

I could see him coming in for a visit, but I don't know that he's still a guy who'll play in the secondary. I do think Henry might end up at safety at some point. Depends on what they do in the draft, I suppose. I know the Cowboys were thinking about it, though I don't think Wade Phillips really wanted to do it. (Not sure Phillips was a huge fan in general anymore.)

Just curious: What are you going to do with Bullocks in that scenario?

Fri. 11/21/08 12:08 PM

Roy Williams

Hey John,

The most obnoxious part of me is happy that Roy isn't lighting it up in Dallas. Frankly, they've gotten hosed on this deal thus far.

Are you equally tickled?

VTLions, Burlington, VT

Well, for Lions fans, it's better that he keep struggling -- the more they lose, the better that first-round pick becomes. But I liked Roy and still do. Kind of a complex dude, and probably a bit of a coach-killer in some ways, but always entertaining and I think he'll do OK down there in time. He mostly just wanted out of Detroit, despite his public statements to the contrary.

I think you would have Lewis and Gartner on the outsides backed up by Cliff Avril. On the inside you have Lenon and Dizon. Nece and Dizon could play outside too. Start looking for a noes tackle.

John,

Thanks for the response, I will clarify my thoughts more in my future posts. With how the season has gone, I have already started working on 2009. I know the Lions can't change defenses now, it would be a 2009 event. You are right on the nose tackle, the Lions will need to draft one. Just hoping to find value in the draft. Also, you are right on the fact that Ernie is not Troy. I was trying to say that if put in a position where he did not have to take on blockers, Ernie could be a missle in run defense. Also, Bullocks could enjoy playing centerfield in pass coverage. The key to success will still be in improving both lines.

Toledo Mudlion, Toledo, oh

Agreed on all counts, especially the last one.

The pick from Florida St. or the kid from Ohio could take a shot at the nose and they do have a bunch of guys who could play end (Cody & Redding), and a bunch of linebackers that would be good in space as run stoppers including Cliff Avril who isn't a d-end in the nfl. Simms belongs at SS, see Troy P. in Pittsburgh, and Bodden can go back to man coverage on the corner. Maximize the players.

Toledo Mudlion, Toledo, oh

The rookies would get eaten alive, more than likely -- Fluellen's under 300 lbs. Sims is no Polamalu -- I know that's not what you're saying, but some people might misinterpret that. And I agree: Bodden's a man coverage guy and it shows -- he's just not comfortable doing what he's been asked to do.

But that's just not gonna happen, anyway. Marinelli's a Tampa 2 believer.

Tue. 10/07/08 12:02 PM

Roy Williams

They don't have anyone who could play nose tackle.

They don't have any dominate Dlinemen, the 3/4 calls for a Jerry Ball type of player, someone who can plug up the center and tie-up at least 2 Olinemen.

Might have been able to do that if we still had Big Babby!

He might not have had the wind to chase down the QB on every play, but at 375+ he would defenatly own the middle!

Just tired, Hamilton, Mi

And they're having a hard enough time finding three LBs on this team, let alone four.

Mon. 10/06/08 12:16 PM

Roy Williams

I hope we don't trade him. I think the only decent part of this team is the receiving corps and we need to keep it intact as we rebuild the o-line and d-line. Also, a new qb will need their help. Franchise him next year, switch to a 3-4 defense and add o-line in the draft.

Toledo Mudlion, Toledo, oh

I think you might get your wish, at least on Roy. But we'll see.

Sun. 10/05/08 05:26 PM

Roy Williams

John,

What are your thoughts on trading Roy Williams? I think the Lions need to start shopping him around now before he leaves as a free agent and they get nothing for him. As a Lions fan I'll be sad to see him go, but happy for him at the same time. He deserves a chance to play for a good franchise. He's had a great attitude during 6 or 7 miserable years he's spent here. What are your thoughts?

snjthaar, Augusta, GA

In hindsight, it'll be easy to say they should've dealt him last summer. That's a bit revisionist in that a lot of fans -- and a lot more than will admit today -- thought this team had a chance to be decent (or better) this year and weren't interested in dumping one of the marquee offensive players for a future draft pick, for instance. But the problem is, there's not a lot you're going to get in return for him right now, I don't think. (And neither does Roy, though he's playing this about as well as he can, I think, assuming he really does want out of here.) Again, what you read as rumors (San Fran is the latest, per the Dayton Daily News) often just isn't accurate. But, yes, the Lions should see what they can get for him, or anybody, at this point. Their next GM and coach would appreciate a some more draft picks, quite obviously.)

Roy Williams

Okay but it wasn't like Roy even wanted to be here, was it? He's tired of losing, right? After that supposed injury that no one saw anything happen during the Minnesota game. Then he wouldn't step foot on the field unless they had a chance at the playoffs. It leads me to believe he didn't get hurt as badly as some were lead to believe. It leads me to believe he doesn't care. Look at all the comments he's made and think about his actions. He says he doesn't mind if he gets the ball unless they lose?

I love my team but I'm not one to coddle the pooch. If he wants to win and he loses??? In my mind if they can't win then he wants out of here. I mean who complains when you're winning, right? That's his words. My point is that they should have shipped him off. He's gonna be whiny all year now and he's not even that good.

Millen doesn't see potential. He doesn't see potential problems either. This is a problem. Is Roy being here such a big thing? It's not the biggest thing. Dang it though, why doesn't anyone else see what I do?

Millen, again, put himself in a position to fire someone. He brought in a potential, hopeful, up and coming, Superbowl DL coach and an actual Superbowl head coach and put them together. One had a history of being a control freak! This was a potential problem. If he was smart he would have never put himself in that situation. And later, instead of recognizing Martz as a genius who actually made the offense move down field for once, he fired him for the head coach that produced a 32nd ranked defense. Marinelli was brought in for defense wasn't he? I'm thinking Martz must have really made Millen's melon look small. ((Excuse me for a moment HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!! Okay I was just losing my mind there.)) God forbid if Martz is a genius instead of Millen!!!!!!!

Anyway, what does it matter, right? We all know we're at the end of Millen's career here. It's not like I'm surprised either. I'm just mad that it's been going on so for dang long.

Thanks, I needed to get that off my chest.

Deagle, Novi, Mi

Glad we could help. I wouldn't be surprised if Martz ended up the head coach in SF, by the way.

Wed. 09/17/08 02:50 AM

Roy Williams

Two years ago he ended the season 3rd in receiving yards, because there was a lack of talent at his position. I don't picture him ever returning to the top 5, he's only been there once. He drops passes consistently.

You Media guys like players like this that run their mouths, but quite frankly he's not even ranked in the top 40 right now at his position. Last year he finished 34th in receiving yards. If you want to point to the injuries he receives every season, I would argue that every player in the league is faced with the same dangers. It would be unfair to say that he is better then the other 33 men that had better seasons last year. If he can't hang in the league like the rest them then he deserves that 34th ranking.

Martz is gone, Calvin is much better, and Roy is average. Not being ranked in the top 40 is below average.

Dallas was offering a 1st round pick for him. Detroit should have got it done.

Deagle, Novi, Mi

Again, if you thought this team had a chance to improve from 7-9 -- and the Lions' front office did, which is all that matters -- then you'd be hard-pressed to make that deal, I think.

Mon. 09/15/08 03:54 PM

Roy Williams

Should have been traded. Why? because he quit in Minnesota last year that's why! I don't remember seeing him limp off the field do you? This year he's dropping passes AGAIN and yesterday he dropped another ball right in the numbers. He's getting called for interference penalties and for the second week in a row. With all the wholes on this team you would have thought trading him in the offseason was the way to go, but nope, he's still here! He doesn't seem to even want to be here! and when the team was down 0-1 he made mention that 0-2 wasn't that bad. He's a dope. The players that Millen interviewed and hired for these positions are just stupid. Matt Millen is an idiot. You can't be excited about anything from this team except Calvin Johnson who is clearly a good player. If he were to play anywhere else in this league I think he'd just be an average talent.

Deagle, Novi, Mi

Roy Williams is not an average talent. And honestly, I think every team in the league has receivers saying most of these same things when things aren't going well. That's the way receivers are, quite frankly.

And from the perspective of a team and a coach that went into the offseason thinking they were on the verge of respectability, etc. -- I'm talking from their thinking (and a lot of their fans), mind you, not the obvious reality in hindsight -- trading one of your marquee talents for lesser players or draft picks doesn't make much sense.

Mike,

No question but a suggestion. Tell Roy Williams to SHUT UP. No more pointing for a first down, stop embarassing yourself by stating you don't tip the pizza delivery guy.

Just SHUT UP and play. No one cares about anything else. You drop more easy catches than make brilliant one's.

Just SHUT UP. You play for the crappy Lions, no one respects you because your on the worst team over the Millen area.

Just SHUT UP because you made the Pro Bowl as a back up.

Oh, by the way, I am aLions fan living in Wisconsin and Roy is the biggest joke outside of Millen.

Mark

WI Wolverene, oshkosh, wi

Mark'

He's a good player who adds a little color to the game. Nothing wrong with that.
