Dave Dye's NHL power rankings

1. Detroit: Power play carrying team until defense tightens up.

2. San Jose: Back-to-back home victories over Cup finalists.

3. Montreal: Habs have earned 17 out of a possible 20 points.

4. N.Y. Rangers: Could third-period meltdown at Toronto start losing streak?

5. New Jersey: Devils hope Martin Brodeur (elbow) only misses one game.

6. Buffalo: Thomas Vanek keeping up goal-a-game pace.

7. Calgary: Miikka Kiprusoff was huge during six-game win streak.

8. Minnesota: Niklas Backstrom doesn't give up bad goals.

9. Pittsburgh: Malkin and Sid, and the rest of them hid.

10. Anaheim: As bad as they were early, Ryan Getzlaf's line has been just as good lately.

11. Boston: Had back-to-back 1-0 road wins in Vancouver and Edmonton.

12. Chicago: Still no goals for Jonathan Toews after 11 games.

13. Carolina: Need someone to stand up and fight occasionally to protect skill players.

14. Nashville: Shea Weber becoming one of top defensemen in league.

15. Washington: Alexander Ovechkin has two goals, five points in eight games.

16. Philadelphia: Won four straight after 0-3-3 start.

17. Vancouver: Won at Los Angeles and Anaheim on consecutive nights.

18. Edmonton: Scored five goals during five-game losing streak.

19: Toronto: Here's a vote for Ron Wilson for coach of the month.

20. Dallas: Marty Turco's 4.34 GAA is becoming very alarming.

21 Colorado: Going nowhere unless penalty kill improves considerably.

22. Tampa Bay: Finally, Lightning strikes for three straight victories.

23. Ottawa: Home record is 1-4-1 - three out of possible 12 points.

24. Florida: Worst power play in league - 5-of-21 (9.5 percent) at home.

25. St. Louis: Hard to judge. They've played eight of first 10 at home.

26. Phoenix: Typical ups and downs for such an inexperienced team.

27. Columbus: Rick Nash playing center for first time since he was 9 years old.

28. Los Angeles: Youngsters are competing but not always finishing the job.

29. N.Y. Islanders: Goalie Rick DiPietro (knee) is out 4-6 weeks.

30: Atlanta: Ilya Kovalchuk trade rumors are heating up.
