The Wings are trying something new this season, breaking into two groups - Team Howe and Team Lindsay - beginning with Tuesday night's Red-White game in Traverse City and continuing through the first six preseason games.
Team Howe is scheduled to play Wednesday vs. Montreal; Friday vs. Boston, and Sept. 30 at Montreal.
Team Lindsay will play Thursday against Boston in Halifax, Sunday vs. Atlanta and Oct. 1 at Atlanta.
Here's the breakdown of both teams:
TEAM HOWE
Quincey, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Meech, Maltby, Leino, Chelios, Oulahen, Rafalski, Conklin, Draper, Howard, Downey, Kindl, McGrath, Pare, Mursak, Tardiff, Galvin, Hossa, Kopecky and Holmstrom.
TEAM LINDSAY
Lilja, Abdelkader, Cleary, Haydar, Lebda, Stuart, McCarty, Hudler, Osgood, Larsson, Samuelsson, Zetterberg, Ritola, Helm, Lemieux, Ericsson, Axelsson, Kronwall, Pyett, Gelech, Atherton and Franzen.
The highlight: Marian Hossa plays at home Wednesday and Friday.
Note: Valtteri Filppula was not listed on either team's roster because he's not expected to play Tuesday night (sore thumb). His linemates are Cleary and Samuelsson, so Filppula will join them on Team Lindsay when he plays in the preseason games.
Filppula skated during Monday's practice and said his passing and stick-handling were fine, but he didn't do any shooting. He said the thumb had improved since he got run into the boards Sunday by Aaron Downey.
Filppula sounded encouraged and didn't rule out playing later this week.
In the meantime, Darren Helm is on Team Lindsay for Tuesday night, apparently as a replacement for Filppula. Helm's training-camp linemates, Leino and Downey, are on Team Howe.
The Wings cut 10 players following Monday night's scrimmage. Four players - forwards Jordan Foreman, Cody Thornton and Bryce Swan, and defenseman Joe Ryan - were released.
Six other players - forwards Stephen Johnston, Zach Torquato and Randy Cameron, defensemen Travis Ehrhardt and Cameron Cepek, and goalie Thomas McCollum - were returned to their junior teams.
The Wings' roster is now down to 53 players.
