Waiting ...

In order to be allowed on the ice for the post-game celebration, the NHL wants the photographers to be in place behind the Zamboni gate with no less than five minutes on the clock. So we all gathered, and waited ... In an overtime situation, we have to wait. The entire time. We were so far back that we couldn't even hear the game let alone see it. It was a very strange experience, after covering these games for so long, to not be shooting during such an important point in the game.

red wings game 5 officiating

I've been watching hockey for over 50 years. I don't recall ever seeing such a poorly officiated game as game 5. Now, I don't have a dog in this fight but I am a devoted fan and cannot see any reason for such poor officiating at this level. In particular, the tandem of ohaloran and devorsky (hope I spelled them right) have been consistently well below what is expected of NHL referees in each game they have done. The other refereeing tandems are doing a fairly good job. These two should not be refereeing cup final games under any circumstances. Too many good refs are available to the league. The final and fatal call is not in question here, just the entire rest of the game. The refs should not influence the outcome of a game through their own blown calls or missed calls. They may well have changed the outcome of this contest through their incompetence. For the benefit of fans who want to see fair and competitive hockey, I hope the league will offer these two some serious retraining at the minor league level.
