Chris Getz is Topps!
The Metro Detroit area got a little love with the release of Topps' All-Rookie team Wednesday, but, surprisingly, it wasn't for Tigers 20-year-old right-hander Rick Porcello. Nope, it's another snub for young Ricky.
Rather, Chris Getz, the former Grosse Pointe South star and Michigan Wolverine, was named the team's second baseman for his solid rookie year with the White Sox (he was traded to the Royals earlier this month).
Getz, 26, hit .261 with two homers and 31 RBIs in 107 games, but his most impressive statistic came on the bases. He had 25 stolen bases and was caught just twice for the best success rate in the American League.
His season ended with sports hernia surgery in late September, but he's expected to be plenty ready for spring training -- and plenty ready to earn the Royals starting second base job. He was shipped to K.C. with fellow infielder Josh Fields in exchange for Mark Teahen.
Getz will have stiff competition at second base from Alberto Callaspo -- that's if the Royals, in a trade-happy mood, don't deal Callaspo following his breakthrough season, in which he hit .300 with 11 homers and 73 RBIs.
Here's the rest of the all-rookie team selected by Topps, the trading-card giant that will include a trophy on each of the winner's 2010 baseball cards: Giants 1B Travis Ishikawa, Rangers SS Elvis Andrus, White Sox 3B Gordon Beckham, Marlins OF Chris Coghlan, Pirates OF Andrew McCutchen, Orioles OF Nolan Reimold, Mets C Omir Santos, Braves RHP Tommy Hanson and Phillies LHP J.A. Happ.
