Tom Gage

The Detroit News

If I could change. . .

Have enjoyed all the lists, but expanding the conversation, if I could change sports TV coverage in general, not just the game of baseball, I would limit that incessant ribbon or crawl or whatever you want to call the constant running info at the bottom of the screen.

I wish I had counted (actually I don't) how many times on Saturday we were informed that Sam Bradford had been knocked out of the game early for Oklahoma. Two hundred times?

I find it to be a distraction. Don't eliminate it completely, because the updates are useful, but give it a break once in a while. Run it for five minutes, then stop it for five minutes. Anybody agree?

my big change

First, because we live in America and crimes come with appropriate penalties, I'd go into the production truck of network baseball broadcasts and slap the guy in charge of choosing the shots we see at home.

Then, I'd make it a rule that the camera stay on the pitcher and batter for at least five seconds prior to every pitch. I don't care about the fat lady in row 56. That pudgy guy with his hat on backward in row 44? If he was sitting next to me, I wouldn't turn to look at him. I don't need to fixate on the manager's face for ten seconds at a time. The beauty of baseball is all about the tension. And the tension starts with the pitcher, catcher and batter. Stop showing me eighteen different shots of things I wouldn't look at if I was there.

Note: Picking up a pitch that's already halfway to the batter is irritating beyond belief. If my mind could adjust that quickly, I'D BE PLAYING . . . or busy preparing my induction speech.

The guy in the truck constantly chooses his shots as if he's broadcasting solely to first time viewers who need to be distracted by those eighteen bizarre crowd shots that have nothing to do with the beautiful rises and falls of baseball.

It's as if every major network production guy doesn't 'get the game'.

Soon enough, we'll be able to pick our own camera views (hopefully within a few years) . . . until then, show us the game and pander to the die hards who watch every night and thereby support the broadcasts and the game -- not the ADD addled casual fan who just loves to watch a lown eating an apple while juggling.

The pitcher, the catcher, the hitter.

The pitcher, the catcher, the hitter.

No more than five supporting shots an inning as per defense and limited crowd reaction.

The pitcher, the catcher, the hitter.

Definitely a distraction. But mostly because it repeats unimportant info. indefinitely.

Ribbon or Crawl

Tom: Honestly, I believe that the ribbon has its place. I agree that it is repetitious to a degree and should be monitored closely and left there for just a few minutes, not for entire games. As for adverts around the games, I would do the same thing I have for movies and other programs on television....not watch. It is extremely annoying now to have "commercial" timeouts in pro basketball, football and other athletic events. It impedes enjoyment of the flow of the games. What's with the annoying ads anyway? I think some sports are slow enough that anything like ads to slow them down or distract the flow already existing is bad. Ribbons, crawls or adverts don't belong in the middle of the event on television continuously!!

Ribbon of Crawl

Budweiser came up with a way of advertising on World Cup soccer games (where there's no break in the action except half time). They reduced the picture to the middle of the screen and put their generic advertising in a frame around the edges. No dialogue or anything, just a frame.

Ribbon of Crawl

Tom

I don't recall the sporting event, but I recall watching a game this year where a written commercial came across the bottom of the screen during the play-by-play. That could be the future TV has planned for us.

Crawl

Eliminat eall the crawl. Whatever happened to the game itself?

Agree

I'll flip over to ESPN NEWS for my breaking sports news.
