Leyland speaking about Bonderman
From Chicago ...
Jim Leyland, following up on the way Jeremy Bonderman threw on Monday night:
"Overall, his debut was not good," said Leyland. "That's what I was quoted as saying last night and I'm sticking to my story.
"I'm also sticking to my story that it was his first time out (in a year) so you give him a little slack. But I was disappointed in his slider, to be honest with you.
"I wasn't really planning on 93-94 velocity, but I thought the slider would be more effective. He threw some decent change-ups, but if you were a scout, not the manager, and had been sitting in the stands for the game, knowing the Jeremy Bonderman of the past, he didn't look like he was quite ready.
"That's how I would sum it up," said Leyland, "and I think that's a fair assessment.
"I don't want it to sound like I'm down on him, because I'm not. He had surgery, he's coming back, it was time to find out - and his debut was not good. Plain and simple."

Bonderman's Re-Invention
"I don't want it to sound like I'm down on him, because I'm not. He had surgery, he's coming back, it was time to find out - and his debut was not good. Plain and simple."
To those who thought Bonderman's return was OK,Leyland disagrees.I think we now have a pitcher who cannot attain his previous velocity and is now attemmpting to re-invent himself with a different approach.
We saw how teams placed such a great value on velocity, and mastery of different pitches during that draft last night.
Bonderman should not be allowed to try out his new approach at the MLB level.Plain & simple.
