Laird out

From Minneapolis. . .

Manager Jim Leyland is giving catcher Gerald Laird two days off starting tonight because of Laird's 1-for-35 slump. Laird is available to play, but he won't start.

"I know a frustrated player when I see one," said Leyland.

Laird's frustration manifested itself in another way of Wednesday. He shaved his head.

"Trying everything," he said. "I've never struggled like this. I'm getting pitches to hit, but can't find anything to get me going."
